Chapter 459:The Assassination Tower
As Ethan turned around, his heart almost leapt out of his throat.
A strange and unexplainable dread rose inside him. It was not a simple fear. It was a deep instinctive warning, like a shadow hanging over the world itself.
Two deadly eyes seemed to stare from the darkness. Their gaze felt as if it was looking down on everything in the area.
The pressure was overwhelming.
“Run!”
That was the only word Ethan heard.
The masked assassin reacted instantly. His body shot backward like a streak of lightning, moving with desperate speed.
“Running away!” a calm voice echoed through the darkness.
“In your dreams.”
SWISH!
A hand suddenly appeared from the endless darkness. It moved so quickly that Ethan could barely see it clearly.
The hand grabbed the assassin mid-movement.
Before the man could react, his body was slammed straight into the ground.
BOOOOOOM!
The impact shook the battlefield violently. Snow exploded into the air and the frozen earth cracked open under the brutal force.
The assassin’s body was embedded deep into the ground like a nail hammered into stone.
Ethan stood frozen where he was.
Cold sweat slowly ran down his back.
“Damn… what level is this guy? And who is he?” Ethan muttered under his breath with shock and horror.
The strength displayed just now was terrifying.
The assassin who had nearly killed him seconds ago looked completely powerless in front of this new figure.
Then the man slowly stepped out of the darkness.
Moonlight finally revealed his face.
Ethan’s eyes widened immediately.
“Duke Lancelot!” Ethan shouted in surprise.
He quickly walked forward and stopped a few steps away before giving a respectful bow.
“It’s good to see you, Your Highness.”
Duke Lancelot stood calmly while observing him.
The old duke’s eyes slowly moved over Ethan from head to toe. His gaze was sharp, as if he could see straight through Ethan’s body.
After a few seconds he nodded lightly.
“Hmmm… nearing fifty percent,” he murmured thoughtfully.
“Nearing Mystic Realm. Not bad. Not bad at all.”
Ethan scratched the back of his head awkwardly.”Thanks for the praise, but it’s worth nothing.”
Duke Lancelot gave a faint chuckle.
“Nah. Don’t be humble.”
He stepped forward and patted Ethan on the shoulder with a friendly gesture.
“I like confident young people.”
Ethan straightened his posture and then asked curiously.
“Your Highness… did you come here for Amber?”
Duke Lancelot shook his head slightly.
“No.”
Then he looked directly at Ethan.
“I am here exactly for you.”
“Me?” Ethan frowned in confusion.
His expression clearly showed his shock.
Duke Lancelot nodded calmly.
Without saying anything further, he raised one hand slightly. Two invisible forces suddenly dragged two figures across the frozen ground.
The bodies slid through the snow and stopped directly in front of them.
THUD!
They were the assassins.
The masked man who attacked Ethan earlier was slammed roughly onto the ground again.
Duke Lancelot spoke calmly.
“I have some connections with the Assassin Tower.”
He glanced at the captured assassins briefly.
“They told me that someone posted a bounty on your head. The more you defeat the more will come.”
Ethan’s eyes widened instantly.
“So I came running here as fast as possible,” Duke Lancelot continued.
“There was a chance you might get killed tonight. It would not look good if a newly appointed Marquise died right after making contributions to the Empire.”
Ethan’s mind was spinning.
Assassin?
Bounty?
What the fuck?
The actual fuck?
The Assassin Tower was not some small underground group. It was a powerful organization where elite assassins from all over the world gathered. Their headquarters were located in the Empire of Morvath.
Ethan could not understand how he had offended someone enough for them to place a bounty through that organization.
Which son of a bitch is behind this?
Could it be the demons?
But then another thought appeared in his mind.
Do assassin towers even take missions from demons?
Ethan looked at Duke Lancelot seriously.
“Your Highness… Do you know who is behind this?”
Duke Lancelot shook his head slowly.
“Sadly, I don’t.”
His expression became slightly serious.
“The Assassin Tower is extremely secretive. Information about contracts is hidden carefully.”
He paused before continuing.
“One can only learn such things if they defeat the Leader and the Elders of the tower themselves.”
The cold wind moved across the battlefield again as those words settled into the night.
Ethan remained silent for several seconds while he processed everything he had just heard. The cold wind brushed across the battlefield and moved the snow slowly across the cracked ground. The unconscious assassin still lay nearby, half buried in frost and broken stone.
Ethan rubbed his forehead slowly and lifted his eyes toward Duke Lancelot.
“Your Highness… does that mean more assassins will come?” Ethan asked seriously.
Duke Lancelot did not hesitate.
“Yes.”
The answer came calmly and without any attempt to soften it.
“More will come.”
He briefly glanced at the unconscious assassin lying on the ground before continuing.
“Once a bounty is posted in the Assassin Tower, it rarely disappears until the target is killed.”
The words were spoken plainly, but the meaning behind them was heavy.
Ethan slowly exhaled and rubbed his temple.
“So they will just keep sending people?”
Duke Lancelot nodded slightly.
“Yes. Different assassins will accept the mission.”
He paused for a moment and then added calmly.
“That is simply how their system works.”
Ethan let out a quiet breath and shook his head.
“What a pain in the ass…”
He looked down again at the masked assassin lying on the ground.
“So this guy was just the first one.”
Duke Lancelot gave a faint smile.
“More or less.”
“But there are rules they follow,” he added while folding his hands behind his back again.
Ethan raised his head immediately.
“Rules?”
“Yes.”
Duke Lancelot’s tone remained relaxed as he explained.
“The Assassin Tower could never have existed for so long if they acted recklessly. They have certain boundaries they rarely cross.”
Ethan frowned slightly and folded his arms.
“And what kind of rules are those?”
