Chapter 380 Learning about Frey’s Master [2]
The woman provided pills that enhanced her followers’ strength while simultaneously creating a dependency. The “good feeling” was the hook. Once they tasted it, they kept coming back. They would do anything she asked, betray anyone she pointed at, all for the next dose.
The failed products in the base, the ones with dead eyes and hollow faces, they weren’t just victims of a failed power-up. They were addicts who had been pushed too far. Given too much, too fast, until their minds crumbled under the strain.
And the ones who survived the process kept serving. Not because they were loyal, but because they couldn’t stop.
Moon looked down at Frey. The hunger in the man’s eyes when he spoke about those pills told Moon everything he needed to know.
Frey wasn’t a subordinate per say, rather, he was an addict on a leash.
‘No wonder he doesn’t necessarily have any loyalty towards her. He wants these pills, but his life is also important.’ Moon thought.
Suddenly, a thought emerged in Moon’s mind. He was no longer thinking of killing Frey, rather, he wanted to do something else.

Moon stared at his lives count. He had sixty thousand currently, It sounded like a large number, but for what he had in mind, it wasn’t nearly enough. He wanted to evolve one of his epic skills to Second Order, and after accounting for a reserve of lives to ensure he could survive in case anything went wrong, the numbers simply didn’t add up.
‘I need more lives.’
“Hey.” Moon looked down at Frey. “How many lives do you have left? Answer truthfully. Because your answer will decide whether you live or die.”
Frey’s face drained of whatever color it had left. “I-I have e-eight thousand lives left.”
Moon remained silent for a moment. Then he reached into his storage ring and pulled out multiple prepared runes. He placed them across Frey’s body one by one, chest, arms, neck. Each rune adhered to his skin, pulsed faintly before turning invisible. Even if Frey wanted to use his own skill as a Runesmith to activate it, he would need time and with Moon beside him that simply wasn’t an option.
“I’ve placed explosive and restricting runes on you. I won’t kill you as long as you remain cooperative. But if you do anything stupid, I will make sure your death is gruesome.” Moon’s voice carried no mercy. “Am I clear?”
“Y-Yes, sir!”
“Good. I’m going to release you now. I also need the communication device you used earlier to speak to that woman. I have a use for it.”
Frey didn’t resist. He didn’t try anything clever. The moment the paralysis runes deactivated, he reached for it with trembling hands, pulled out the device, and held it out to Moon.
Moon took it and stored it in his ring.
“Walk in front of me.”
Frey obeyed, stepping forward, Moon fell into step behind him, his eyes fixed on the man’s back. There was no warmth in his gaze or pity. This was a man who had tried to deliver him to a woman who collected people like livestock. Whatever happened to Frey from this point forward was a consequence he had earned.
‘He’ll need to die eventually. He knows my secret.’
Moon wasn’t going to expose one of his greatest advantages, his Grim Reaper talent, because he felt sympathy for someone who had tried to enslave him. Frey would get what he deserved…when the time arrived.
“Lead me to the nearest hunting ground.” Moon commanded.
Frey glanced over his shoulder nervously. “But there are spirits around. They might already be there.”
“The spirits have already left. It’s been hours. Just lead the way. If there are any signs of spirits, we turn back.”
Frey swallowed hard and nodded. “Okay.”
He turned and began walking. Moon followed close behind, his hand on his staff, ready for anything.
The two of them made their way toward the hunting ground, moving carefully through the silent forest. As they passed through the outer edges, they found beast corpses scattered across the ground. Kills left behind by the spirits, too weak and too small to be worth taking as resources or so it appears.
Moon didn’t hesitate to store every single one of them in his ring. Meat was meat, even if it was a mosquito’s leg.
The hunt lasted nearly seven hours. Frey led the way without complaint, identifying tracks, and warning Moon of areas where thorn plants grew thick near water sources. He was cooperative in the way only a man with explosive runes strapped to his body could be.
Moon killed everything they encountered. Wolves, lynxes, armored boars, a pair of territorial apes that tried to ambush them from the canopy. A large portion of the kills were Body Refiners, thick-skinned, powerful beasts with no elemental abilities but terrifying physical strength. They gave little to no spiritual energy, but the lives they provided were large.
By the time the sky above the canopy had cycled through darkness and back into pale grey light, Moon had gained a significant haul. His storage ring was packed with beast corpses for selling, and his life count had climbed steadily with every kill.
More importantly, a notification had appeared during the final stretch of the hunt.
[You have leveled up!]
Moon felt the surge of power spread through his body as he leveled up to level 30. Two new acupoints opened inside him, bringing his total to eleven. Additionally, Five allocatable points sat waiting for his decision.
