The Devil CEO's Contract Wife - Chapter 287: Your Burden is Mine

Chapter 287: Your Burden is Mine
“Yes, you’re right…” Athena conceded. “It was quite a statement. Living true to the Devil nickname. No one else will think about going to that old witch or crossing Ares again.”
I released a breath. “Yes.”
That was the only reason I sent those names to Ares. I counted on his effective response to that message, and it gained as I hoped. Now, there were no more leeches around him.
“I need you, Athena. For this to work, I need you.”
There was still more I had to do. This wasn’t over yet, not by a long shot.
“God, when did you become so stubborn? I suppose you’ve always been, but this is directed towards me this time. It’s annoying, sexy, but annoying.”
I smiled, knowing she would come around.
“Athena…” I said softly.
“I did promise I’d be by your side no matter what. Besides, you’d be lost without me, and not in a chance in hell am I gonna let that happen. I told you, I’m your bestie, your best bestie.”
“Thank you, I knew I could count on you.”
“Who else?” She ended the call.
I bet that was her revenge.
I giggled, running a hand through my hair. I stood there in thought for a while before I had a grip of my senses.
Knowing Ares would be finished soon, I stripped off my nightdress and stepped into the bathroom.
I drew a bath, tossing some bath bombs and other things that would make this relaxing, because that was exactly what I needed, after such a hectic day.
I dipped in, allowing the warm water to soothe my muscles, closing my eyes for a few minutes, only opening them when I felt a heavy stare.
Ares was leaning against the door frame, watching me with a hot intensity that seemed like fire was crawling through my skin.
“Sorry, honey, I couldn’t wait,” I said with a sweet smile. “Will you join me?”
I sank my teeth into my bottom lip, hoping he would get to stripping and perhaps give me a little bit of show.
Ares tilted his head, appearing to be in thought. I also discerned the pressure on his shoulders, causing a constriction in my chest.
Ares came close, leaned down, hand resting at the edge of the tub while the other gripped my chin. He stroked my gently, and I could already feel him easing as if he needed the skin contact.
“I take it that your call didn’t go well…” I said softly.
“Something like that…” He frowned slightly. “But I’ll handle it.”
Always carrying the weight of everything.
I guess there was no one to share them with. Ares has always had to deal with so much.
He wasn’t just the infamous CEO or the devil. He was more than that. The strongest, bravest person I have ever known.
“Do you wanna talk about it?” I asked, hoping that on his own accord, he would open up.
“You haven’t asked me about that for a while now.”
“Because you didn’t want me involved.”
Ares leaned closer and kissed me on the lips. “And you have been a good girl.”
I licked my lips.
“You deserve a reward. How about a date? We haven’t had one for a while now.”
I smiled. “You have been busy.”
“I can surely make time to have dinner with my wife.”
“A date is perfect then.” I stand, wrapping my arms around his neck to bring his lips close in a lascivious kiss.
Ares curved his head and took me deeper, his tongue shoving into every corner of my mouth in a matter of seconds, but I redrew, my chest rising and falling heavily.
Ares began stripping, and hunger engulfed me when he kicked off his pants.
“Is there room for one more?”
“As long as you’re not shoving that cock into me.”
“Too late for that.”
It took a beat before I threw myself at him.
“Careful there, you’ll fall.”
“You won’t let me… neither will I.”
His eyes darkened at my words, for I spoke profoundly and meant every word.
Your burden is mine.
I don’t care if I have to live as the mystery Vixen for as long as possible. My utmost support and loyalty are his, and I’d be the one to break the invisible shackles holding him.
I’m gonna pull the trigger for you, honey.
“I love you,” I murmured before locking our lips.

I crossed my legs, waiting patiently, my eyes roaming the bar. This place was far more isolated than the rest I have been in, making it a perfect location.
I had bought the entire bar, solely to make it private. Only those I allow would enter and leave.
“Here he comes…” Athena whispered to me. “I sure hope this plan of yours works. No room for failures.”
“What’s with the stern attitude?”
Athena fixed my bangs with her fingers. “Because I want you to kick ass no matter what.”
“You don’t have to worry about me…”
“Look at you, all grown up.”
I rolled my eyes.
“I’m glad you’re doing this, Cat…” she admitted. “I couldn’t do it, but you could. I guess I always thought Ares had it all under control. I mean, he does have it under control. But now he has you, even though he doesn’t know it yet. It feels good.”
“Athena…” I said more softly.
“This is my cue.” She pushed to her feet. “You got this, Vixen.”
I smirked, watching her leave. She passed James just when he came into view.
His eyes moved towards her direction before they met mine. Like a little kid having his first-ever presentation, he fixed his suit and came closer.
He pulled out the chair and took a seat opposite me.
“Cheer up, James…” I said, amused. “I’m not gonna bite you.”
He cleared his throat. “Ms. Vixen. I trust you’re having a good day.”
“Indeed. Hello, James. I trust you had a good night’s sleep.”
Earlier, I sent someone to remind him of our meeting and the new place we would be seeing, and I don’t mean a knock on his door.
He probably woke up with a gun pointed at his forehead and the coordinates given.
“Y-You called.”
He’s sweating already.
“And you answered. You should count yourself lucky because of your lack of punctuality the last time. You could have been a body filled with holes yesterday.”
I was kind of grateful he didn’t show up. I could have lost a very vital source.
He gulped, adjusting his tie as if to breathe. “I heard what happened. It seems like Constance has set her sights on you now. You’re Don King’s secret associate, and you have made it known. You have a target on your back.”
“I was counting on it,” I said. “But I didn’t think she would be that forward.” I set my glass on the table, pausing in thought. “That old shark does have wit.”
James cleared his throat.
“Now tell me what you know. Everything.”
“Constance doesn’t suspect a thing; she truly believes her offer is enough to keep me at her side.”
I nodded slowly. “And?”
“There was a meeting, which is why I was delayed that day…” He paused for a bit as if deciding whether he should speak or not.
“I’m not paying you to keep your mouth shut. Whatever it is, say it.”
James gulped, adjusting his tie again. “She announced Adrian King as Ares’ heir. Claiming he’s the firstborn child. Agatha was present too during all this. If you ask me, they seem to have formed some kind of partnership.”
They are working together.
“Was there anything to prove that Adrian is Don King’s son?”
“I mean, she announced it proudly. The others see this as enough evidence.”
“You’re an idiot, and the rest of you too.”
“E-Excuse me…?”
“Listening to things like that without any proof is baseless accusations.”
More importantly, I can’t believe Constance is taking that direction. Did she really believe Adrian is Ares’? How on earth was Agatha able to convince her?
“What else?” I asked.
“It caused quite a stir, but no one said a word. There is doubt, but if the oldest King has declared such a thing, then who is to question it?”
I see. Constance is coming on more strongly because Ares succeeded in weeding out her men in his circle. But the most important question surfaced in my mind.
Between Agatha and Constance, who is controlling whom? Because it sounds like they are both using each other for their own gain. That’s gotta be it.
Agatha wants Adrian to be recognised as the heir. Constance wants to torment Ares.
It’s almost laughable at this point.
“Do you believe Adrian is Ares’s son?” James’ sudden question snapped me out of it. “You know more about this, don’t you?”
“Did you see any DNA test of any kind?”
“Not really…?”
“There… you have your answer. All these are baseless accusations.”
