THE GOD EATER - Chapter 560: Half Slaves.

He can admit that on the surface, the rank 6 divine beings don’t look like they owe the sect any money. But when the life-leech is accounted for, then he believes that it becomes uncertain if the divine beings only owe the sect money and are not slaves to the sect.
After all, divine beings can’t refuse to pay the life-leech. So it is certain that they owe the sect money. What isn’t certain is whether the life-leeches turn divine beings into slaves for raising more lifespan for the sect.
To him, divine beings look like slaves because they have no choice but to pay the lifespan through the life-leech. But he also knows that divine beings have the option to give up their Divine Position in order to stop being drained of lifespan every ten years.
The thought made him laugh and say, “Ok, ok. Maybe they are not slaves. But they have to be called livestock at the very least.”
He had decided to be flexible between the titles of slave and livestock for divine beings. However, he is adamant that divine beings quickly become slaves for the sect once they become ambitious and want to advance.
He is of the presence of mind that divine merit points are used to enslave divine beings, with more power used as bait. He is so adamant about this that nothing can change his mind about it.
He chuckled and said, “Maybe if the power we gained through the divine merit points were permanent, I could call it an equal exchange of goods and services. But it is clearly not an equal exchange of goods and services.”
Clearly, he has a problem with the current cultivation system. However, despite all of his gripes with divine merit points, if he were allowed to acquire them with lifespan, he wouldn’t mind it.
Unfortunately, the sect is content with earning lifespan from divine beings free of charge without giving anything in return. So they don’t need to give him divine merit points for lifespan.
This has made it so that he will have to give the sect his time and effort before he can gain divine merit points. It is one of the reasons why he is complaining so much.
In the case where 24 years is too long for him to raise his law fragments to 100 million units, he definitely can’t spend 27.4 years just to raise 100 million units of law fragments and hand them over to the sect. So he decided to find sect missions that would reward him with divine merit points in the shortest amount of time.
This is why the third thing he did after checking his stats with the Power Identification Ability and complaining about how divine beings were being treated like livestock since he left the second heaven was to search for sect missions.
He took out his sect token and used it to search for highly rewarding sect missions. He wanted to earn as many divine merit points as possible, so he searched for the highest-paying missions to pick from.
The highest-paying mission was a mission to infiltrate another sect with the sole objective of helping the Four Directions Sect steal their pathway.
In order to complete this mission, he would have to give up his current Divine Position, let the sect kill him, let the sect take his soul, and let the sect reincarnate his soul into the territory of the sect.
From there, he is to join the sect and work his way up the hierarchy of the sect. His goal is to become a rank 6 divine being in the other sect. As for how that will help the Four Directions Sect steal the pathway, he was not informed in the mission description.
The reward for doing all of these is 2,000 divine merit points. So if he can successfully start all over again in another sect and still manage to become a divine being in the new sect, the Four Directions Sect will make him a rank 7 divine being, and he will still have a thousand divine merit points left over from the reward.
When he saw this mission description, he sneered and said to himself, ’First of all, 2,000 divine merit points are too little a reward for doing something that can help with stealing a pathway.’
’Secondly, I doubt anyone will give up what they already have as a divine being for a slim chance at advancing to rank 7. It is just too risky. I’ll be better off slowly raising divine spirit creatures than undergoing something this risky.’
’Thirdly, even if the reward is high enough and the Four Directions Sect will make me a rank 8 cultivator if I complete this mission, I still won’t do it because I don’t want to hand over my soul to them.’
This last reason is the main reason he decided not to pick the mission. He believes that it is already bad enough that the Four Directions Sect has marked his soul like he is cattle, a slave, or property of theirs. He doesn’t want to actually give them access to his soul.
First of all, he doesn’t trust the Four Directions Sect not to tamper with his soul. He has heard of the things that death cultivators can do with the souls of others and doesn’t want to give the Four Directions Sect the chance to do something to his soul, such as enslaving him through it.
Secondly, even if the Four Directions Sect can be trusted not to tamper with his soul, exposing his soul to the Four Directions Sect will likely expose the existence of Fenrir. This is a risk he can’t take.
Thirdly, even if Fenrir won’t be noticed and even if Fenrir is noticed but the sect doesn’t do anything to him because of Fenrir’s existence, the mission still requires him to give up everything he has, including Fenrir, to go and start over again in another sect.
