The Innkeeper - Chapter 2202 Heart Demon

Chapter 2202 Heart Demon
The Midnight Battalion, when it started, had only a few hundred members. Moreover, all of them had the Death Counter Bloodline. However, over the years, Leonidus, the leader of the battalion, had strategically added more members with various bloodlines.
The only thing he didn’t do was add members who didn’t originally come from the Midnight Inn. It wasn’t because he wanted to discriminate against them – it was simply because outsiders could not achieve the level of synergy they had. That synergy was extremely crucial, especially since the Midnight Inn granted them various benefits and formations, such as augmentations and the Midnight Mech.
Still, he did not let the battalion grow too large. He followed the principle of a few elites over large numbers. After all, the Inn could have more than one battalion, and more than one army. Someone else could go the numbers route if they wished.
Naturally, such a choice had many drawbacks. However, today, Lex could only appreciate the benefits of such an elite battalion. Although Lex was only working with 1% of his mental capacity, and even that was a bit of stretch practically speaking, he was more than capable of creating simple cultivation techniques and spiritual techniques.
After spending a short amount of time using the Innkeeper’s Scent Diffuser to enhance his spirit, he came up with a way to turn the insight Abroar had granted him and turn them into a technique that could be used by humans.
The technique was limited to the human race because the broader its scope, the more difficult it would be to make the technique. So instead of lowering its difficulty level, Lex focused on developing its strength.
Then, he passed the technique to the Midnight Battalion, and had them cultivate it in an enhanced Meditation room. They were learning it at a reasonably quick pace. The only reason that they could even do this was because they were elites.
However, the reasonably quick pace they were at would require them to cultivate for at least one decade before the technique could be used. That was too long. Thus, Lex had to employ some desperate measures. Well, not really desperate – just slightly expensive.
Lex brought out the Innkeeper’s Scent Diffuser. The amount of scent released each time an item was put into it was usually only sufficient for one person. Thus, to cultivate thousands of battalion members, he would need to put in thousands of the same materials.
Fortunately, Lex had ripped off- cough, no, fortunately Wu Kong had graciously contributed nine trillion Celestial Core Energy Sources, so a few thousand was a small price to pay to expedite the comprehension of his battalion. But he couldn’t overdo it. Comprehension, if forced, could permanently damage the battalion members, so he could only speed up their understanding of the technique to a certain extent.
Lex sighed, and dismissed his clone. He was becoming anxious, which was not a good thing at his cultivation level. The more difficult the situation, the calmer he needed to be. Normally it wasn’t tough for him at all, since he was the one facing danger. Now that someone else was facing danger, it was much harder for him to calm down.
In the end, Lex realized that this was a mental weakness he had, and he needed to work on it. After all, no one in the universe was completely omnipotent and omnipresent. Even Dao Lords could fall into traps and make mistakes.
As much as it went against the core purpose of cultivation to accept that some things were just outside his control or power, that’s exactly what he needed to do. So, until such a time that the battalion was ready, and Z finished working on the piece of the realm, he decided to simply meditate.
He’d done all that he could. Anything more would be redundant. If only the Dream realm hadn’t excluded the Inn’s golden keys when it had taken all the workers and guests, they’d have a way back to the Inn. But not only had the Dream realm specifically avoided bringing those along, any kind of tracking ability became useless within the realm. Lex and the Midnight Inn weren’t the only ones suffering – the whole universe was. That was why the Sages had worked together to seal the Dream realm so long ago.
“Inner peace, inner peace, inner peace,” Lex muttered to himself, as he tried to calm himself down. While he was not so far gone, if he could not get his mentality under control, he might develop a Heart Demon. In all his years cultivating, who could have guessed that it was a small baby who revealed the greatest weakness in Lex’s mentality?
Within the Dream realm, Almira looked outside her cage again. The scenery around her kept changing, but the cage around her never left – because it was not trapping her, it was protecting her.
The cage was made of bones, and empowered with unbelievably powerful sword intent. More than once that old white wolf had tracked her down and attacked her cage, but it hadn’t been able to break through.
Almira, despite being a baby, had a complex mind. While her desires and priorities remained that of a baby, during critical situations she could recognise right from wrong, and she knew that her situation wasn’t the best, which is why she obediently remained within her cage.
After a long time, the same old wolf appeared again. Using the divine mythical bloodline in its body, even if it was impure, it could track down a scent it had
personally caught.
There was something about that baby which attracted it, so he had constantly tried to get to her, but the damn cage kept preventing him from reaching her. Fortunately, the cage’s power was only at the Earth Immortal realm, while the wolf was a Heaven Immortal, so over time it wore the cage down.
Without holding back, the wolf attacked again. Just as the cage was about to shatter, something unusual happened. Another power emerged from within the baby, and restored the cage to full strength. In fact, the cage felt even firmer than before.
As if that was not all, a projection of a human appeared in front of the cage. “To whomever has triggered this projection, be warned! I am Lex Williams of the Midnight Inn, and this child is under my protection. Mercy is a trait I never picked up as a child, and forgiveness is not something I excel at either. Choose
your next actions carefully.”
Somewhere, far, far away, a pair of tightly closed eyes suddenly opened.
