The World Dragon's Heir - Chapter 761: See For Himself

The primary reason that the Assassin’s Guild leader had come today was not to arrange a deal with Dominic. They could have done that through an intermediary.
Instead, he wanted to see for himself if the rumours about the Butcher of Wistover were correct.
Sometimes people got a bad reputation for making the difficult choices.
Now that he had spent some time talking to Dominic, it was clear that the reputation was not overblown. He did not arrange the deaths of a crime family for political reasons, or out of fear. He didn’t do it out of selfishness or cruelty.
No, he had paid to have them all killed because they annoyed him, and in Dominic’s mind such nuisances didn’t deserve to continue to live.
That was a sentiment that the Assassin’s Guild leader could appreciate.
Getting rid of problems before they became larger problems was common enough. But getting rid of problems simply because you didn’t have the patience to deal with them was on a whole other level.
“Would you like me to have Amie open a portal so that you can bring your people here? It will likely make it easier than trying to sneak them into the Manor as staff.
Our vetting process is unconventional.”
“Amie is your personal shadow?”
Dominic chuckled at the reference, as Shadow was the name that the Guild Master went by.
“She is. She’s proven invaluable since I arrived back in Wistover. She is also quite skilled with portals, so she can open on to whatever city you would like, with just my assistance.”
Shadow shook his head and gave Dominic a sly smile. “I’d rather not have you open a portal to where they are now.”
“Yeah, I likely should have thought of that.”
“I will have them sent over within the week. It might take a few days more than that, but not much more. There is just one last thing that I should warn you about.
There is a weapon that we’ve seen employed lately in the far south that is directly targeted at the Sorcerers. It’s a form of Techno Magic known as a Mana Grenade.
It explodes and releases a massive amount of mana into the area, along with a charm that forces those nearby to absorb it. Now, that’s bad for a human or a witch. It will knock them out more surely than any stun spell.
But it will make the monster blooded go feral.
They’ve been using it to try to cause chaos by having feral monster blooded locals rampage through unconscious populations.”
“Oh, that is purely evil. I will definitely have to take countermeasures.”
“Is there one that will work for you? As your bloodline is so heavily draconic, I would assume it’s worse.”
Dominic shook his head. “No, I’m dragon enough that even feral, I’m only a threat to strangers. If it happened to me and everyone passed out, I would simply leave to find something to kill, or something to eat.
Depending on the time of day, of course.”
That answered the question that the assassin had about whether the weapons would be something that his people should stock.
The answer was yes. But not to try to use on dragonkin.
There weren’t many of them here in Cygnia, but in Burlish and Uxbridge, on the western side of the continent, there were many more. The other Assassin’s Guild Masters would want to know this information before it backfired on them.
The message passages between the Guilds were strained at that distance, but he was sure that he could get the message through.
Only, he didn’t know that they had already found out the hard way when someone tried to use one to assassinate a winged dragonkin, assuming he would rampage. Technically, he did. But not in the direction that they were assuming.
He had gone hunting their strike team.
So, the forces in Burlish had already abolished the practice of using them against dragonkin.
“I will take my leave, there is a bit of a mess to clear up in the Capital right now. Some idiot managed to fall down the stairs, and everyone suspects that it was my people.”
Dominic stood and shook the Assassin’s hand. “Good luck with that. Once people get it in their head that you’ve done something, it’s nearly impossible to change their minds. There are still many Noblemen who think that I killed all the civilians in this part of Stansia Province.”
Guild Master Shadow left, and Amie came into the room.
“He’s an interesting one. Not much monster blood in him, but enough that his disguise is nearly perfect. What did he want?”
“Mostly to know what my intentions for the future are.
If we wanted to do something drastic, the Guild would support us.”
Amie nodded. “But you don’t intend to. Because you hate paperwork more than you hate having someone in charge of you.”
“You know me so well. Honestly, being in charge of stuff is overrated. How are the other Guild Leaders doing?”
“Excessively drunk. Well, some of that is Pops’ fault, but mostly I blame Ragnar for forgetting that the humans can’t hold their liquor. Once the old man showed up to raid the kitchen, with his apprentice in tow, it turned into some weird sort of Reunion.
I think that they know each other, but I can’t be completely certain because they’re talking about entirely different events that didn’t even happen in the same city.”
Dominic knew exactly what she meant without even going out there. They were catching up on old times and recent events, and didn’t feel the need to comment on the events that the other was detailing, so they were essentially holding two different one-sided conversations.
Once the topics overlapped, they would get back on track.
“Alright, I should go rescue Rill and the others. Have we gotten any other unexpected news today? It does tend to come in waves.”
“Not yet, but there are plenty of hours left in the day.”
