Chapter 1388: We Have To ’Play’ With Our Enemies
As we got closer to the tree, we came across what appeared to be the ruins of a former city.
I’m guessing this was the city that had settled near the former Tree of Life before it fell to ruin after the incident.
From where we stood, I could see several of those Abhorrents standing inside the ruins of the city looking listless and unmoving.
“I’m surprised that no one put out a Request to wipe these things out… I would have thought that people might want to reclaim this area or something…” I whispered.
“There were a few attempts made actually,” Lisa explained with a hint of amusement in her voice. “But the risks were not worth the reward since even if you cleared out the Abhorrents… It’s not like you could reclaim this land to be used for anything else anyway. Not when the tree’s influence is still there.”
“Just asking… The area that the tree is influencing isn’t expanding… Right?”
“Don’t worry, that’s been a worry that was solved years ago. It used to be but everyone got together and came up with a formation to stop it. Now they are looking to try to reverse it and maybe even return the tree back to being the Tree of Life again.”
Oh, that sounds cool. Assuming they don’t just end up making things worse of course.
“You sure they won’t just end up making things worse?” Ira asked, mirroring my thoughts.
Lisa waved her hand towards the tree, “After experiencing a disaster like that? Everyone would be doing their best to make sure this doesn’t happen again. They wouldn’t be doing anything to it until they are completely sure of the results. But for now… We’ll just have to put up with it and the Abhorrents around it.”
I looked at the tree that was behind the ruins of the city, “So… Do we still get closer to the tree? Or do we just stop here?”
Lisa gave me an odd look, “Eh? Stop here? Why would we stop here? You’ve barely even seen the tree yet! We should get closer!”
Well… She’s the local here so I’m letting her guide us this time.
And as if to make sure of that, she wrapped her arm around mine and slid my arm to snuggle in between her boobs.
“Alright! Let’s go~ It’s a lovey dovey date to the Tree of Death!!”
I want to point out the irony in that statement but she’s acting so cute so whatever~
We stepped out of the forest of dead trees and into the streets of the ruined city proper.
Looking at the ruins itself, most of the buildings had already collapsed to the point that only the foundation and only some of the walls remained.
But there were some buildings that seemed to have withstood the test of time and decay as it still stood tall despite the cracks on its walls.
From the few buildings that still remained standing, I kind of got a gothic vibe to it as it looked like the buildings you might find in a mediaeval European city. Except if the city was goth.
We stepped through the cobblestone streets and the Abhorrents that were standing around slowly turned towards us.
My girls arranged themselves into battle formations as the not-undead started shambling over to us.
All of them were still Abhorrent pawns so it wasn’t really a threat even if they were to outnumber us twenty to one right now.
In fact…
Ira raised her hand and blood red liquid formed above her before they shaped themselves into spears which were shot out at blinding speeds.
Over half of them were impaled before red vines exploded out from where they were struck to pierce through the bodies of the other Abhorrents that were not hit by the spears.
When the red vines dissipated, all of them fell onto the ground, unmoving.
All of them had been wiped out instantly and the streets in this part of the ruins were cleared of any Abhorrents.
Everyone else turned to stare at Ira while I was trying my best not to laugh.
She frowned, “What?”
Odeta scowled, “Did you literally just forget what we drilled into you the past few days?”
She scoffed, “Aster wants to see the tree and the weather is nice right now. I’m not going to risk her missing out on the view because we got delayed by some stupid plant zombies.”
Tsara sighed, “Wouldn’t it be easy if we just wiped out all of them right now? Then we can have a leisurely stroll through this place instead.”
Lisa giggled, “Ehehehe~ I was already expecting something like this to happen but… Well… I guess you’ll see in a bit…”
Right then, an earth rumbling roar echoed through the air from the direction of the tree which was then followed by the sound of something stomping towards us.
Lisa gave a cute pose, “The Abhorrents function on some kind of hive mind and when a lot of them die really quickly, they would send an even stronger Abhorrent over to eliminate the threat~ Which is what you just did~”
A large figure then rose above the ruins and revealed itself, which looked like a large tree with a distorted Mahun face in the centre of its trunk and mutated Mahun limbs stretching out from its main body.
It’s honestly pretty creepy looking… Let’s see its stats I guess…
[Name: Abhorrent Enforcer
Race: Monster
Stats:
350 Strength
80 Dexterity
470 Endurance
140 Magic]
Well… It certainly is stronger but not much stronger I guess? I suppose if it was a party that was just barely able to deal with the Abhorrent Pawns, the appearance of such an enemy might be problematic but that isn’t the case for us.
Tsara had the same idea as she looked at the creature charging towards us and scoffed at it, clearly already knowing that it was weaker than we were.
That was when Lisa spoke up again, “Oh… Just so you know~ That hive mind network also learns and evolves from its battles~ If it sees that we are easily dispatching the Abhorrents it sends at us… It would evolve and mutate a stronger variant to send towards us. The only way around it is to make it look like we are struggling to prevent it from being incentivised to create something stronger~”
Ira frowned, “That sounds boring… We can just kill them all right? What’s the strongest thing they can even send to us?”
Lisa wagged her finger, “No, no~ You can’t think of it like that~ You see, we aren’t the only ones that need to pass through here, you know? So if we end up forcing them to evolve even further, they will have a new breed of Abhorrents wandering around this place which would endanger the others who might need to travel through these lands~ So the main thing is to keep the status quo here instead of introducing a new threat~”
Odeta punched her fists together, “That means we have to use that thing as a punching bag and control our strength to not obliterate it too much!! Sister Aster!! We have to depend on you to make this believable!!”
Huh? What does she mean that she needs me to make it believable?
Before I could ask, Odeta charged towards the Abhorrent Enforcer and leapt towards it with her fist raised.
Eh? Wait… If you are going to do that… Wouldn’t you just destroy it in one hit?
But contrary to what I thought would happen, Odeta didn’t even punch out her fist and ended up getting struck by the Abhorrent’s giant fist instead.
I gasped when I saw her flying away and leapt into the air, my wings exploding out from my back to fly after her.
I caught her out of the sky and carried her in my arms, quickly healing her with my magic.
“What are you doing, Odeta?” I cried out.
She giggled before fake crying, “Ahhhh~ Ouch, ouch! Oh nooooo! That monster is so strong! You have to keep healing us, Sister Aster! Otherwise we might get wiped out!”
What?
Oh… I get it… They don’t even need to worry about getting hit by a monster like that because it’s so weak and even if they were hit, I could just heal them anyway…
So I guess the plan was to fight with it and pretend to struggle a little before finally killing it to make the Abhorrents think that we were barely able to triumph against this creature.
That should at least satisfy it into thinking that it was a close fight and all it needed to do was to send another one that was similar to that in strength the next time instead of needing to send an even stronger Abhorrent.
Well… I guess we might as well get started now… Go ahead girls, I’ll do my best to support you~ Don’t get hurt too much ok?
