Chapter 294: A Deal is a Deal

Kane’s hand rested on Mjoldr’s haft.

The weight of the axe felt clean and immediate.

"The offers on the table. The trade routes. The warriors. The family bond through Kessa. All of it while you run this under the same roof."

Grathak’s scarred muzzle pulled into something that was not quite a smile.

"The offers are real. Berakamon will fight when the sky breaks. We will open the routes. We will send the strength I named. The family condition stands because strength should be bound, not merely borrowed. None of that changes the necessity of this work. You wanted a coalition. You have the beginning of one. What you do not have is the right to dictate how I prepare the packs that will bleed for it."

A fresh convulsion ran through the changing elf on the platform.

Black fluid leaked from the corners of its eyes.

One of the handlers looked to Grathak for instruction and received only a short, dismissive flick of fingers.

The experiment continued.

Kane stood in the wrong-smelling air and felt the last of the "too easy" sensation drain away.

The talks had been clean because the ugly work had never left the underground.

The support was real because Grathak intended to survive the sixty days with his empire intact and his knowledge of the corruption deeper than any other throne’s.

The family bond through Kessa was both genuine leverage and a way to tie the outsider who had wounded the Guardian’s fragment into the same structure that kept these cages full.

Marisa’s warnings sat differently now.

Not simply the desire for a throne. Not only visions.

A brother who could offer decent terms in the light while refining the same demon essence that was already twisting the deep forest into weapons and monsters.

Kane’s voice was quiet and flat.

"How many?"

"Enough to learn what I need. Not so many that the upper halls notice the supply."

Grathak turned fully toward him, towering, red eyes reflecting the torchlight.

"You can walk back upstairs and continue the talks as if you never came down here. The offers remain. The support remains. Or you can decide this is the betrayal you were waiting for and try to end it now, in this chamber, with the handlers and the cages and the essence as witnesses. Choose quickly. The next application is already measured."

Kane nodded once and turned toward the corridor.

He stopped before he took the second step.

"Were the mutants in the forest your doing too?"

Grathak waited a beat, then answered without shame or hesitation.

"Yes."

"It killed most of your people."

"A valid sacrifice. Controlled pressure forces the outer packs to stay sharp and the deeper bloodlines to remember why they still answer to this throne. A few lost posts and a few corrupted beasts are cheaper than an empire that grows soft before the real enemy arrives."

Kane’s voice stayed flat.

"And the breeding grounds?"

"To give birth to something that can stand when ordinary flesh cannot. Devil essence mixed with beast blood. A race that carries both. If even a fraction of them survive the process and remain controllable, they become the edge that keeps Berakamon from being erased when the sky breaks. Our essence and theirs, shaped instead of merely endured. That is the work. Everything else is noise."

The words landed with the clean, ugly logic of every late-game villain Kane had ever watched monologue behind a screen.

Only now the cages were real, the black fluid was real, and the emperor who had just offered trade routes and trained warriors was the same creature refining demon essence on captives two levels beneath the coalition hall.

Kane decided in that moment, without further internal debate.

Grathak had to die.

He left the chamber without another word.

The handlers watched him go.

Grathak didn’t call him back.

The thick air of the underground clung to his clothes and the back of his throat as he climbed.

By the time he reached the cleaner upper levels, the scent of concentrated essence had faded, replaced by ordinary palace musk and the distant noise of factions still moving between sessions.

He found Marisa in one of the open middle-courtyard gardens.

She sat on a low stone bench at the edge of a cleared space, methodically tearing pieces from a flat loaf and tossing them to a small flock of dark pigeons that had learned the routine.

Late-afternoon light caught in her long black hair. She looked almost peaceful, which only made the contrast sharper.

Kane walked straight to her and stopped.

Marisa continued feeding the birds for another few heartbeats before she spoke without looking up.

"You found it."

"You didn’t tell me."

She tore another piece of bread, tossed it, and watched a pigeon snatch it from the stones.

"I only know what the visions show me. The exact shape of his preparations, the basins, the application-, those details do not arrive with the endings. I knew the underground held more than simple pens. I knew the mutants were not entirely natural. I didn’t have the sequence or the stated purpose until you walked in on it yourself."

Kane’s jaw tightened.

He reached down, closed his hand around her upper arm, and pulled her up from the bench with enough force to scatter the remaining pigeons in a burst of wings.

Marisa didn’t resist.

He walked her three long strides to the shadowed angle of the nearby stairwell that led toward the private upper corridors, put her back to the cold stone, and stepped in close.

The hard line of his cock, still half-stirred from adrenaline and anger, pressed against the clothed heat between her thighs through the layers of fabric.

He kept it there, deliberate, while he spoke low enough that the words stayed between them.

"I will kill him now."

Marisa’s eyes lifted to his.

The political mask was present, but underneath it something sharper and more personal moved.

"Not in the open courtyard or with half the banners still inside the walls. You walk back into that underground chamber and cut him down in front of the handlers, and the pure-bloods will call it treachery before his body cools. The southern packs will hesitate. The deeper bloodlines will decide the outsider who passed the Measures cannot be trusted with the throne he just earned a voice on. You will get the kill and lose the army."
