NTR: Barbarian Harem Conquest

Chapter 357: Smell Of Her

  • Next Chapter

The morning sun on the Giant island didn’t rise so much as arrive.

It came hard and white over the ridge, bounced off stone and waterfall spray, and filled the cottage with a brightness that made every surface look freshly scrubbed and slightly hostile.

Kessa woke with a full-body flinch and an immediate, wordless snarl at the light itself.

Thora was already up.

She had claimed a strip of floor near the shuttered window and was moving through a careful sequence, nothing that would tear the ribs, everything that would remind the muscle it still belonged to her.

Sweat darkened the loose training wrap at her waist.

The fabric hid her chest and left the line of her stomach bare.

She didn’t look at anyone while she worked.

Thora was healing.

She was also refusing to be the reason Kane walked into an Elder’s hall short a blade.

Firlia had the sheets in order and the shelf under inspection before most of the room had decided it was conscious.

Her hands moved in the old precise patterns.

Once, only once, her gaze slid to the hearth-corner where Kane was doing push-ups shirtless, back and shoulders working in a steady count.

Colour touched her ears.

She returned to the sealed rations as if the inventory had developed a sudden critical error.

Kessa rubbed her eyes with the heel of one hand.

"Why is it so bright?"

Misha, already combing her white hair into something that would survive a formal hall, reached over and patted the top of Kessa’s head the way one might settle a cat.

"Go on and take a bath."

"Mmph."

Kessa’s tail flicked once in grudging acceptance.

She padded toward the basin-end of the room, still half-asleep, and then stopped dead as she drew level with Firlia.

Firlia found the shelf extremely interesting.

She adjusted a water skin that didn’t need adjusting. It was a mistake.

Kessa’s nose lifted.

Her ears came forward.

She took one step closer to the shelf, then another, her striped face pulling into a frown.

"Did the Giants attack us last night?"

Misha tilted her head, comb pausing.

"Of course not. Why?"

"This place..."

Kessa walked a slow half-circle around the shelf.

Firlia remained pointedly turned toward the stone.

"And this smell. Something’s been fishy."

Kane dropped out of the last push-up, caught a cloth, and wiped his face.

He crossed the room in three strides, hooked Kessa under the arm, and steered her firmly toward the bathing alcove.

"Go train or go bathe. Don’t try to become a knight of the realm because you have a good nose."

"Hey—I know that smell."

Kessa twisted in his grip, eyes bright with sudden, delighted suspicion.

"It’s you. What did you do? Which Giant woman did you bring last night?"

Thora stopped mid-motion.

Sweat ran down the line of her waist.

She looked at Kane over her shoulder with the flat expression she reserved for logistical problems and marital ones.

"Really? Right after landing?"

"It is not what you think."

Kane shook his head once, deposited Kessa across the threshold of the bathing space, and pointed.

"Water. Soap. Fewer accusations before the Elder’s call."

"I am not accusing. I am investigating."

Kessa’s voice echoed off the Giant-scale basin.

"If you dragged a forty-foot woman into this cottage, I deserve to know for load-bearing reasons."

"There was no forty-foot woman."

"Then why does the shelf smell like you finished something important next?"

Firlia’s ears were scarlet.

She had progressed from adjusting water skins to alphabetising sealed rations that had no alphabet.

Misha’s comb resumed its path with the particular smoothness of someone filing information for later.

Griselda, already awake near the containment case, didn’t open her eyes.

The corner of her mouth might have moved.

Kane shut the bathing screen with more force than strictly required.

"Bathe, Kessa."

"Grr..."

A splash.

A grumble.

The sound of a tiger-striped woman aggressively washing while her nose continued to work the problem.

Thora resumed her sequence, slower now, eyes still on Kane.

"We will discuss load-bearing later," she said.

"If you collected a political complication in the dark, we deserve to know her name at least."

"There is no political complication."

Misha set the comb down and picked up the finished brief.

"There is always a political complication."

She glanced at Firlia, then at Kane, and left the observation there.

Firlia cleared her throat.

"The wraps are dry. The token is in the case. If we are called to a banquet instead of a bare hall, I will need to know whether their food customs require reciprocal offering. I did not pack gifts for Giant appetites."

"We will invent humility," Kane said.

"It costs less than a crate of whatever they roast whole."

The elven commanders had already dressed and checked weapons in the efficient silence of people who had slept in shifts.

One of them reported the outer path clear.

No movement on the lower tier.

Kessa emerged damp, hair darker with water, tail lashing in investigative frustration.

She pointed two fingers at Kane’s chest.

"I am not done. I am only postponed."

"Postponed is acceptable."

A knock landed on the cottage door.

Kane opened.

The empty-handed Giant from the quay filled the frame again, soot less obvious in daylight, tired eyes taking in the assembled household with the air of a man who had already run one count of land-walkers and was prepared to run another.

"Have you got good rest?"

"We did," Kane said.

"Well. Come join our banquet."

The Giant’s mouth twitched.

"The Elder came down from the sight lines before dawn. He will not give you a bare stone room and a single chair. He will give you food first. On this island, food is how we decide whether someone is worth the argument that comes after. Refuse the table, and you refuse the hearing. Come."

Kessa brightened at once.

"Food. Real food. Not sealed travel rations. I take back every complaint about the light."
