Our Anniversary, You Chose Her – I Chose Divorce
Chapter 839: On the Way
The bodyguard inspected the small pickup truck and found it intact. He immediately got in and started the engine.
Fiona Linton hurried in after him, buckling her seatbelt. "Who do we contact once we’re out?"
"My partners are outside; we’ll contact them first, then Daniel Hayes. He’s nearby," the bodyguard replied. Since it was the New Year, Chloe Reed hadn’t made Daniel follow her, telling him to go relax instead. Who could have expected something like this to happen?
"Then you contact your partners, and I’ll call Daniel," Fiona said.
The bodyguard nodded. "Alright."
As the truck’s engine rumbled in the dark of night, Fiona’s heart leaped into her throat. She was terrified of being discovered. If they were caught, it would all be over!
The bodyguard had already memorized the topographic map and knew there was another road leading out from the cold storage area. He accelerated, speeding toward the exit in a race against time.
BANG!
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out, striking the back of the pickup.
Fiona shrieked in terror, but she quickly clamped her mouth shut, fighting hard to overcome her fear. This was bad! The worst-case scenario had happened! The noise of the vehicle had attracted the mercenaries’ attention. To think there were still mercenaries lurking in this area!
Fiona gripped her seatbelt tightly, her palms sweating from sheer panic. The bodyguard, however, remained calm and composed. Protected by the truck’s metal exterior, they were safe for the moment.
A phone was suddenly tossed onto her lap. "Doctor Linton, try contacting Daniel Hayes right now," the bodyguard instructed. They had already been targeted; they couldn’t wait until they were outside to make the call.
"Okay..." Fiona’s voice trembled. She picked up the phone, clutching it so tightly her knuckles turned white.
No signal! There was still no signal! Ahead of them lay the main gate, but it was slowly closing! The mercenaries had found the controls!
"Doctor Linton, hold on tight!" the bodyguard bellowed. He gunned the engine, driving the truck straight toward the closing doors.
Fiona’s eyes went wide. Her heart raced, her entire body tense to the extreme as she watched the truck crash headlong into the nearly shut gate, violently forcing a way through.
The moment they burst outside, Fiona felt as if she could finally breathe again. She gasped for air, drenched in sweat. Glancing down at the phone, she cried out in delight, "We have a signal!"
She quickly found Daniel’s number and dialed it. After three rings, the call connected, and a grimly serious voice came through. "We’ll be there in five minutes. What’s the situation inside the villa?!"
Fiona almost burst into tears. Swallowing her emotions, she relayed everything that had happened inside the villa in full detail.
"Walker Grant is there too..." Hearing this, Daniel drew in a sharp breath. "Alright, you guys get out of there immediately. We’ll be right there!"
It turned out that the bodyguards stationed outside the villa had contacted Daniel the moment they noticed something was wrong. However, they were soon discovered by the mercenaries, and Daniel had lost all contact with them. Now, having re-established communication with Fiona and learning the situation inside, Daniel pushed his car to go even faster.
Ending the call, Fiona closed her eyes briefly. "Daniel will be here any minute. Chloe will definitely be fine."
The bodyguard, his gaze fixed straight ahead, replied, "But it looks like we’re about to be in trouble..."
