Chapter 1393: Chapter 750: What About My Subsidy?

The school is primarily divided into several components. First are those with normal families who send their children here to learn.

The second group consists of those who are in their teens or twenties, who have jobs and come to receive basic literacy education and skills training, working-class people.

The last category includes orphans who, for various reasons, have been brought into the school to receive an education.

Those new Barbarian Tribes kids are honestly also poor. They used to be cared for in a tribal format, but in reality, their parents had long been scattered, with only a small portion having clear familial relationships.

Most of these individuals from Barbarian Tribes backgrounds don’t have money either, so Lance straightforwardly scattered the children across different grades, managing them together and placing their records under the same treatment as orphans, which isn’t considered unfair.

There’s even an intention to do this to sever their ties to the tribe, while externally it showcases benevolence.

Building the school requires money, and currently, it’s far from being free. Regular students have to pay tuition fees, although subsidies make it somewhat affordable, and relatives of heroes receive even greater reductions.

Those who come for literacy and supplementary education, although it’s considered a reward, don’t have to pay tuition fees, but it’s also counted as a subsidy, equivalent to the Lord helping them pay for tuition.

However, they still have to pay for meals, and both previous groups – those with family support and those able to earn money – can afford it.

The problem lies with those orphans. They can’t pay tuition fees, and naturally, have no money for meals; these expenses can only rely on the Lord’s funding for subsidies.

The standard meals aren’t particularly good but do include vegetables and meat, and there are daily nutritional supplements like eggs and milk. If there are harvests from the farm’s Berry Garden, they even get berries.

Lance genuinely treats them like people in raising them, because these orphans have been selected by him before being accepted, and belong to a group he is specifically nurturing to be detached from family connections, and only accepting grace from Hamlet.

But why, when he came today to have a meal, didn’t he see the nutritional supplements in their bowls? Only dry, hard bread?

"Is this all you eat? I remember there should be nutritional supplements, shouldn’t you have at least some meat every day?"

The students didn’t expect the Lord to suddenly appear, and when faced with this issue, they naturally did not hide anything.

"It’s dark, and the Lord said the food is reduced."

"Everyone is starving, and we’re fine eating this."

Looking at the simple smiles of those children, Lance’s expression turned a little unnatural, but he didn’t say much more, starting a detailed inquiry before turning to more people.

"When did this start?"

"What do you eat for your three meals?"

Lance went around them for a general investigation, realizing this wasn’t an isolated incident but a significant portion affected, and not a short-term issue either.

It was just that before there was at least a little, but since Extreme Darkness arrived, this problem has become more severe.

It mainly manifested among those orphans, including the Barbarian Tribes students, whereas those regular paying students had meat in their bowls, likely brought from home.

But today was a holiday, those students had all gone home, leaving only these orphans, which magnified the problem.

Lance’s investigation naturally caught some attention, and soon the school canteen manager quickly approached with a big smile on his face, evidently not realizing what had happened.

"Welcome, My Lord, to inspect the work!"

"Finally willing to show up, huh? Looks like your spies aren’t working well, or are you busier than me? I don’t know what you’re busy with."

Lance looked at the person, smiling but with that sarcastic tone like playing with prey, giving off immense pressure, and the person sensed a hint of danger.

"Go get me a meal," Lance casually ignored his reaction, casually throwing out a sentence, while seating himself among those students.

This sudden change of attitude, high and mighty only to abruptly shift, led the person to inexplicably entertain unrealistic fantasies, daring to curry favor with Lance, the Lord.

"My Lord, we have prepared the food in a private room."

This made Lance, who had just sat down, pause slightly, his smile growing even wider.

"I’ve been in Hamlet for so long, and I’ve never heard of the school canteen having private rooms.

What? Eating with students and teachers is too beneath you?"

"No, no!"

The person hastily denied, still unsure of the Lord’s inexplicable attitude, but the Lord’s sarcastic tone hadn’t stopped, below the smiling facade was full of malicious intent.

"That’s even more trouble. I can’t even use a private room to eat, and you already have it. Perhaps your authority is greater than mine."

A suddenly sprung comment instantly wiped the last squeezed smile from the person’s face, leaving only trepidation.

"Oh, I remember, you’re city-born and were promoted to the school canteen position because of your experience in organizing banquets, serving important figures; now you’re also become an important figure, right? Without a private room, how can one be considered important, isn’t that so."

Lance continued speaking for himself, revealing the person’s background. He was previously a chef for some wealthy merchant in the city and was promoted because of relevant experience.

But this kind of pressure test is unbearable for ordinary people, fortunately Lance wasn’t planning to waste more words, and directly pointed out the key issue.
