Chapter 466: Nami

At the Drinker Pub.

In the dimly lit, noisy haze of the Drinker Pub, the celebration was in full swing. Laughter, clinking glasses, and the occasional out-of-tune singing echoed off the wooden walls. Buggy the Clown spun around dramatically, one arm around Nami’s shoulder and the other raised high with a mug overflowing with ale.

"And we have a new crewmate! Everything is going our way. The map of the Grand Line is mine again!" he howled triumphantly, nearly falling off the barrel he was standing on.

"Ayyy!" Nami echoed with a grin, raising her own drink.

The rest of Buggy’s crew followed suit, hollering and cheering, lost in the euphoria of celebration. The table was cluttered with food scraps, empty mugs, and a few glittering gold coins Buggy had been flaunting like poker chips.

"Time for a drinking contest, new girl!" Buggy said, slapping her on the back hard enough to nearly knock her off her stool.

Nami smirked, the corner of her eyes narrowing like a cat eyeing her prey.

Heh, heh, nobody can outdrink me. At this rate, they’ll all pass out soon, and then their treasure will all be mine. Pirates are such easy prey. She thought to herself, sipping her drink daintily before taking another, deeper swig for show.

Several crewmates were already wobbling in their seats. One had passed out headfirst into a bowl of stew. Another was dancing with a mop. Buggy himself was still going strong, though his nose was noticeably redder than usual.

"Oi, Nami, you can drink!" Buggy cackled. "You sure you’re not some kind of tank?"

"Just a little practice," she said with a faux-humble shrug. "I used to drink with sailors all the time back home."

Buggy gave her a suspicious squint, then promptly forgot about it and slammed back another mug.

Amidst the revelry, a muffled voice echoed from somewhere behind the bar area.

"Hey! Let me out! Give me some food also!"

Nami sighed, rolling her eyes as she stepped past the rowdy pirates to reach him. She tossed him a loaf of bread and a hunk of pork on a small plate. "Here. Don’t choke yourself before my contest."

Luffy munched it down eagerly, nodding at her between bites. "Thanks, Nami! You’re not bad. Maybe I will let you join my crew after all."

Nami shot him a deadly look. "Never." She leaned closer. "Don’t you realize what’s going to happen to you? They will sell you somewhere."

Luffy blinked around. "But hey," Nami softened slightly, tapping the bars, "if my plan works... maybe I’ll give you the key to this cage."

Buggy wrenched himself free from the table and staggered over. "Haha! You picked the wrong partner."

"Partner?" Luffy snorted through a grin. "She is not my partner."

"Ahahaha, look at this guy. Still got guts even in a cage. But don’t worry, Straw Hat... we’re going to give you a proper show!"

Buggy turned to his crew. "Load the cannon!"

"Aye aye, Captain!" his men shouted, scrambling into action.

Outside the pub, the massive buggy-themed cannon was dragged forward and aimed at a cluster of abandoned buildings across the street.

"Time for a little demonstration!" Buggy declared proudly. "A taste of what happens to those who mock the Great Buggy the Clown!"

The cannon fired with a thunderous BOOM.

A ball of explosive destruction rocketed outward, smashing into the cluster of wooden homes. A moment later, a blast rocked the entire neighborhood, sending debris and dust into the sky. Flames licked the air as the wreckage burned.

The pirates erupted in wild laughter and applause.

"Beautiful!" Buggy shouted, spinning in place like a circus performer. "Now imagine what it’ll do to a person!"

He turned to Nami and tossed her something.

A lit fuse.

"Your turn, new girl," Buggy said, motioning toward the cannon now aimed directly at Luffy’s cage. "Kill the Straw Hat."

The fuse in Nami’s hand hissed softly, the ember creeping closer to her fingers.

She stared at it. Her hands trembled.

"Go on," Buggy urged with a grin. "Don’t think of it as killing a person. Think of it as eliminating competition. You want to join us, don’t you? Or was all that talk just hot air?"

The pirates jeered and laughed, chanting her name mockingly. "Naaaamii~ Naaaamii~ Show us you’re one of us!"

Luffy watched her calmly through the bars, still chewing.

"Well?" Buggy asked, growing impatient. "You don’t want to be seen as weak, do you?"

Nami’s breath caught.

Her fingers trembled as she held the burning fuse. The cannon was ready. All she had to do was drop it into the chamber and walk away.

Just like all the other pirates who had betrayed others for gold, fame, or safety.

No. No... I’m not like them, she thought, teeth gritted. I came here to survive... to gather enough money to free my village. But killing someone...

She glanced at Luffy. The boy was staring back at her with a completely unbothered expression, as if he knew she wouldn’t do it.

The fuse burned lower.

Nami clenched her jaw, her fingers beginning to shake violently.

"DO IT!" Buggy shouted.

But she couldn’t.

The fuse dropped from her hand and fizzled out against the damp ground.

"I can’t," she whispered.

"What!?" Buggy’s eyes bulged in disbelief. "Are you serious!?"

"I’m a thief, not a killer," Nami said through gritted teeth. "I’ll steal from pirates. I’ll trick them. But I’m not going to take a life just to prove I belong in your joke of a crew!"

Buggy’s face contorted with rage. "You DARE mock the Buggy Pirates!?"

His hand detached and flew toward her like a spear.

Just before it struck—CLANG!

A blade intercepted it midair.

The hand flew back, reattaching to Buggy’s wrist as a figure landed between Nami and the cage.

Green hair.

Three earrings.

Three swords.

"Zoro," Luffy said.
