Chapter 158: A Build-Up Of Something Sweet

  • Next Chapter

When Adrien presses his red-painted lips against Orion’s, the taller man stills.

For a single, quiet moment, Orion does not move, his entire frame going completely motionless under the sudden shock of the gesture.

The faint, dim lights from the distant amusement park filter through the branches of the trees above, casting soft blue and pink highlights across the sharp edges of his face.

Then, the quiet moment shatters.

Orion returns the kiss, his lips moving against Adrien’s with an unexpected sweetness. The manic edge that usually defines him melts away entirely, replaced by a delicate tenderness that neither of them anticipated.

The contact is slow and unhurried, warm and deep. Orion gently buries his long fingers into the sleek, freshly trimmed bob of Adrien’s hair, cupping the back of his head with careful pressure, while Adrien’s hands slide up to frame the sharp line of Orion’s jaw, his sharp red nails resting lightly against his skin.

Adrien pulls back just an inch, his dark eyes searching the billionaire’s face in the dim twilight. He looks at the dark pupils, the quiet intensity in his eyes, and the smooth line of his lips.

Adrien nods to himself in quiet, internal confirmation, silently reaffirming that the lunatic before him really is breathtakingly handsome. Without a word, Adrien leans back in, closing the tiny distance between them once more.

They kiss for a long time beneath the evening sky. It is serene, heartwarming, and completely undisturbed by the chaos of the world outside this quiet park.

The quiet moment lasts until a sharp, deliberate cough breaks the air nearby.

A young mother standing on the paved path a few feet away, holding the small hand of her young son, glares at them snidely.

She pulls her coat tighter around herself, shooting them a look of disgust. "Get a room, you two. Children play in this park," she huffs, quickly turning her child around and pulling him away down the trail.

Adrien and Orion break apart, their foreheads resting against each other as they burst into soft, breathless laughter. No words are necessary between them.

The atmosphere feels natural, a smooth, unforced progression of something that has been building between them since the moment Adrien stepped into that car.

They rise from the wooden park bench together, the evening air cooling against their skin. This time, without a word spoken, Orion gently reaches out and takes the car keys from Adrien’s hand.

They leave the quiet park behind, walking side by side back toward the parking lot. Orion keeps one arm wrapped firmly around Adrien’s waist, guiding him along the dim pathway.

They slide into the car, the engine turning over with a low, quiet purr, and glide into the evening traffic. Adrien cradles the giant white teddy bear and the rest of the carnival prizes securely in his lap.

As his red-painted fingers rest against the soft fur of the plush toy, a steady, blooming warmth continues to spread across his chest.

Instead of driving straight back to the mansion, Orion turns down a quieter avenue, pulling into the private parking area of an elite, quiet restaurant tucked far away from the main city roads.

The restaurant is shrouded in soft, amber lighting, with dark wooden paneling, velvet booths, and light jazz humming from unseen speakers.

They are led to a secluded corner table near the back, surrounded by sheer drapery that separates them from the rest of the dining room.

As soon as they sit down, Adrien rests his elbow on the table, leaning his chin into his palm while his giant plush bear sits awkwardly in the velvet chair beside him.

"You brought a giant white bear into a four-star dining room, pretty boy," Adrien says dryly, raising an eyebrow at Orion. "The hostess looked like she was about to faint."

Orion rests his hands flat on the tablecloth, a smooth smirk spreading across his lips. "Let her faint. The bear stays whether she likes it or not. You earned it, duckling... Or rather, my intimidating presence earned it for you."

"Your terrifying smile earned it," Adrien corrects smoothly, tapping one sharp red press-on nail against his water glass with a sharp click. "You basically robbed the poor man with your smile."

"I merely negotiated for a favorable outcome," Orion counters smoothly, leaning forward into the warm candlelight. "And besides, if anyone in this establishment has a problem with your companion, I can buy the building before our appetizers arrive and fire the entire floor staff."

Adrien rolls his eyes, though a faint smile touches his painted red lips. "Ah, yes. The classic Orion solution. When in doubt, commit financial warfare."

A waiter arrives, stepping cautiously toward their table. He sets down the leather-bound menus, his eyes lingering for a second too long on Adrien’s sleek dark bob, sharp red nails, and the slightly smudged lipstick.

Orion’s eyes narrow instantly. The temperature in the booth seems to drop ten degrees in a second as his dark gaze locks onto the waiter’s face.

"Is there something specific on my partner’s face that requires your extended examination?" Orion asks, his voice dropping into a lethally quiet tone.

The waiter turns pale, immediately snapping his eyes down to his order pad. "N-No, sir. Not at all. May I start you off with some wine or an aperitif?"

"We’ll take a bottle of your highest vintage red," Orion says smoothly, not breaking eye contact until the waiter bows frantically and scurries away.

Adrien kicks Orion under the table, his heel hitting the toe of Orion’s expensive leather shoe. "Stop terrorizing the service staff. I’m trying to have a nice evening, you psycho."

Orion catches Adrien’s foot between his ankles beneath the table, trapping it securely while his expression remains entirely unbothered. "I don’t like people staring at what is mine, Adrien. You should know that by now."

"I’m sitting right here wearing a dress and a wig because I felt like it, not because I’m your property," Adrien retorts cheekily, though he doesn’t pull his foot away. He leans across the table, his brown eyes gleaming with sharp mischief. "Besides, if anyone should be intimidated by how good I look tonight, it’s you."

Orion lets out a low, breathless laugh, his dark pupils expanding as he takes in every inch of Adrien’s face under the warm candlelight. "Oh, I am thoroughly intimidated, duckling. My blood has been running hot since the moment you stepped out of that bedroom."

Throughout the dinner, their fingers keep brushing against each other over the white tablecloth.

Every time Adrien reaches for his bread or his wine glass, Orion’s fingers linger against his skin, tracing small, invisible patterns over his knuckles and along his wrist.

They exchange lingering, heavy glances across the candles, the silence pulling tighter and tighter with every passing minute.

Even a blind person walking past their table could see what is bound to happen next.

"You haven’t touched your steak," Orion notes softly, nodding toward Adrien’s plate.

"I ate three sticks of cotton candy, a bag of fried dough, and two scoops of strawberry ice cream," Adrien reminds him, cutting a tiny piece of meat and popping it into his mouth. "My stomach is currently fifty percent sugar. If I eat all of this, I’m going to pass out in your car."

"Then I will carry you," Orion replies instantly, without a trace of hesitation or humor. "I have no issues carrying you anywhere you wish to go."

Adrien stares at him for a long moment, the quiet intensity in Orion’s voice settling heavily between them. The banter fades for a brief second, replaced by that same raw, unfiltered atmosphere that started at the park bench.

"You really mean everything you say, don’t you?" Adrien whispers softly, tracing the rim of his wine glass with his sharp red nail. "It’s unsettling."

"I never lie to you, Adrien," Orion says, his dark eyes fixed entirely on him. "I might play with the rest of the world, but not with you. I have no reason to."

Orion signals the waiter, takes the leather folder, and pays the check with a generous tip. He stands up, offering his hand to Adrien, and guides him out of the establishment, holding the giant white bear under his opposite arm without a shred of embarrassment.

They walk through the quiet car park.

Orion deliberately parked far away from the main entrance, beneath the shadow of several tall pine trees near the back edge of the lot.

The sky above holds a subtle crescent moon, its pale glow mixing with the bright amber lights of distant streetlamps to illuminate their path.

The night air is crisp, carrying the clean scent of wet asphalt and pine, and Adrien inhales deeply, enjoying the cool breeze against his neck.

Orion remains completely silent as they reach the sleek vehicle, his dark eyes fixed straight ahead, though his grip on Adrien’s hand never loosens for a single second.

Adrien reaches for the handle of the front passenger door, intending to slide back into the seat he occupied earlier, but before he can pull it open, Orion moves.

The tall man steps forward, his large frame blocking the front handle, and opens the rear passenger door instead. With a firm, gentle hand on Adrien’s hip, he guides him inside.

Adrien lands on his seat with a soft rustle of his sundress, looking up at Orion with a flicker of genuine confusion.

He knows Orion is desperate to drive them back to his own territory, especially given the heavy, unmistakable tension rising between them all evening.

Yet as Adrien meets Orion’s heavy gaze beneath the dim streetlight, the truth becomes clear.

Orion is not going to make it home.

Just had to slip in the reminder that he is a ’billionaire’.
