Chapter 224: I’m Nothing Like Him, But I Will Learn To Be

LOUISE’S POV

The light flickers again. Then, without a sound, it goes out. Neither of them turns around.

They do not see the last pale glow disappear from the valley behind them. They do not know that the easy path Louise once wanted to take has vanished. They only know that the road ahead is long and that they must keep walking.

There will be no clock to tell them how much time has passed, no sunrise to mark the beginning of a new day, and no calendar to count the years.

A hundred years may pass. A thousand. A multitude of years may unfold, each one stretching beyond the reach of memory, until time itself becomes a thing they no longer understand.

Louise may cry again. She may fall to her knees. She may hear the voices of the people she hurt and wish she could return to the world to undo what she has done. She may struggle with the truth. She may lose her way.

But whenever she reaches for him, she will find his hand.

And whenever she begins to believe that she cannot take another step, she will hear his voice.

My little flower.

My kind girl.

My daughter.

He will keep walking beside her, not because the road is easy, and not because he does not understand the weight of what she carries, but because he has chosen to face it with her.

He has turned away from the light he could have entered alone. He has left behind the peace that may have been waiting for him because his daughter is standing in a place where she cannot find her way out.

He could have continued toward that distant glow. He could have rested. He could have left Louise to face the darkness she had made for herself.

But he has taken her hand instead.

And so they walk.

The man who once made pancakes in a tiny kitchen, who read his Bible while the morning sun came through thin curtains, who tucked strawberry candies into a little girl’s coat because he wanted to make her smile.

And the girl who once prayed that he would become her father. The girl who lost him. The girl who grew up believing that love was something she had to chase, something she had to steal, something she had to destroy before it could destroy her.

The girl who hurt others because she did not know how to live with the hurt inside herself. The girl who has finally stopped pretending.

She is still Louise.

She is still afraid.

She is still carrying the consequences of the person she became.

But she is holding her father’s hand.

And he is holding hers.

Deep in the valley, far beyond the place where the light behind them has vanished, another light waits. It is small, so far away that neither of them can see it yet.

It does not promise that the journey will be short. It does not promise that the darkness will spare them. It simply remains, quiet and patient, at the end of a road too long for any human mind to count.

Louise does not know it is there. Mateo does not know how long it will take to reach it. They have no map, no promise of an easy journey, and no certainty about what waits beyond the shadows.

They have only their hands clasped together and a familiar scripture passing between them.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."

"I’m sorry."

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil."

"I’m sorry."

Their voices mingle as they walk farther into the valley.

And slowly, Louise stops looking back. She stops searching the shadows for a way to escape. She stops trying to push Mateo toward a light that would leave her alone. She begins to walk beside him, not ahead, not behind, but beside him.

As his daughter.

For the first time in her life, Louise does not have to wonder whether someone will choose her. She does not have to beg. She does not have to pretend. She does not have to make herself useful or beautiful or cruel enough to earn a place beside another person.

She has a place. She has a hand to hold. She has someone who knows her and still calls her his little flower.

And even here, in this valley of shadows, with years beyond counting stretching ahead of them, there is a kind of peace in that.

Not the peace of a journey finished, and not the peace of a debt forgotten, but the peace of knowing that she will not have to face what comes next alone.

Louise leans closer to her father as they walk. Her small hand rests inside his. His Bible is tucked beneath his arm, and his voice continues, steady as a heartbeat.

She closes her eyes for a moment.

This time, she is not afraid of what she will find when she opens them because when she does, Mateo is still there. He is walking beside her. He is holding her hand, and he is smiling at her with tears in his eyes.

"My little flower," he whispers.

Louise looks up at him.

For a moment, she is six years old again. For a moment, she is simply a little girl who loves her father and knows that he loves her, too.

Her lips tremble into a smile.

"Papa."

The word comes out softly, almost shyly. It is the name she never got to call him enough, the name she wanted to use when she was six, when she prayed for him to become her father. The name she buried with all the other things she could never have.

Mateo’s face changes. His smile breaks into something so tender that Louise feels her heart ache. He draws her closer and kisses the top of her head.

"Yes, my daughter."

Louise holds his hand tighter.

And together, they keep walking.

Far ahead, beyond the shadows and the years that cannot be counted, the light remains. They will reach it one day. Not today. Not tomorrow. Perhaps not for a thousand years. But one day, Louise and her father will find their way to it.

Until then, she will walk beside him.

And he will walk beside her.

The valley stretches on. The darkness surrounds them. But Louise is no longer alone.

She has her father.

And that is enough.
