[WARNING: CRUCIBLE BREACH DETECTED. MASTER CELESTIAL VAULT INITIATING EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN IN THIRTY SECONDS.]

The automated siren blared like a dying beast, bathing the domed crucible in flashing red light.

Across the chamber, the thirty-foot hydraulic blast doors began grinding downward, their massive steel gears whining as they accelerated toward the bedrock floor.

Evren looked down at Calista in his arms.

Her frail body was trembling; her legs were limp, unable to bear her own weight after twenty-four months of Deep-Iron suppression.

"Amber," Evren said, handing Calista into her arms.

"Hold her. Stay behind the dais."

Amber gathered Calista against her chest, drawing one saber with her free hand. "Evren, what are you doing? The doors are dropping!"

"Getting what we came for," Evren replied.

He darted across the stone floor, crossing thirty yards in two seconds. Grabbing a four-foot adamantine pry-bar from the tool rack, Evren sprinted toward the closing door.

The ten-ton steel slab was three feet from the floor when Evren slammed the adamantine bar diagonally beneath the descending edge.

CLANG!

The hydraulic pistons groaned under the resistance. The hardened adamantine bar bent into a sharp crescent, shrieking as the immense downward pressure threatened to snap the metal in two.

Evren dropped into a deep horse stance, planting both boots firmly into the bedrock. Wrapping his bare hands beneath the bottom lip of the descending blast door, Evren exerted his SS-Rank physical strength.

His muscles bulged as he pushed against the ten-ton hydraulic slab. With a loud mechanical shriek, the heavy door ground to a halt.

"Twenty seconds!" Zephyra shouted from across the dais.

Holding the multi-ton door up with one arm, Evren slid beneath the threshold on his back, rolling cleanly into the Master Celestial Vault.

The vault was cold.

Lined along the walls were rows of reinforced crystalline crates, each glowing with an iridescent, starry luminescence. Inside were hundreds of vials filled with pure, shimmering silver liquid... Grade-5 Pure Celestial Neutralizing Elixir.

At the center of the vault stood a pedestal made of black marble.

Resting atop it was a locked obsidian chest engraved with a crescent moon and seven silver stars. It was the ancestral alchemical chest of House Vesper, containing their stolen celestial grimoire and family research.

Evren walked forward, placing his hand on the crystalline crates.

With a flash of spatial mana, the crates dissolved into his Spatial Storage Ring. He reached the black marble pedestal and touched the Vesper chest, sweeping it into his ring as well.

The entire vault was picked clean in four seconds.

Behind him, a loud SNAP echoed through the chamber as the bent adamantine pry-bar finally fractured under the crushing weight of the hydraulics.

Evren turned on his heel.

Dropping low, he hurled himself toward the narrowing two-foot opening.

He slid under the descending steel slab like a shadow, clearing the threshold a fraction of a second before the ten-ton blast door slammed into the bedrock with a bone-shattering THUD.

The concussive impact sent a shockwave through the floor, blowing dust and frost across the dais.

Evren walked back up the dais and lifted Calista back into his arms, wrapping his dark combat coat around her shivering frame.

"Did you... did you get inside?" Calista rasped, looking up at him weakly.

"I took the celestial medicine," Evren replied evenly, tapping the spatial ring on his finger. "And the obsidian chest with your family’s star-crest."

Calista stared at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her breath hitched in her throat. The stolen legacy of House Vesper... the sacred research her parents had died to protect... it was safe.

"Let’s get to the lift," Evren said, turning toward the corridor.

They crossed the entry corridor and reached the freight elevator gates.

Evren slid the supervisor’s black keycard into the console, but the reader gave a dull red error beep.

High above the lift shaft, a series of muffled metallic thuds echoed down the shaft, followed by the screech of severed steel cables.

CRASH!

Far above them, the elevator carriage plummeted into the darkness, its safety brakes disengaged from the surface.

Amber’s grip tightened on her saber hilt. "They severed the cables. The lift is dead."

Zephyra’s silver-pale eyes narrowed. She raised a hand, signaling for silence. She stepped toward the obsidian wall, her gaze fixing on a brass seam near an overhead air vent.

There, embedded flush with the mortar beside a steel rivet, sat a pinhole glass lens no larger than a grain of rice. It reflected a faint, unnatural glint of purple light. "Covert optical scanners," she whispered, tracing the microscopic wire hidden in the masonry.

"Pinhole surveillance. We’re on a live security feed."

Amber frowned, looking around the empty corridor. "If they knew we were here, why didn’t they send the garrison to stop us on Sub-Levels 5, 6, or 7?"

"Because fighting in the dilution refinery risked blowing up their multi-million-credit vats," Evren answered coldly. "Sub-Level 8 is an airtight bedrock box. There are no secondary stairwells or emergency exits down here."

He looked toward the dead elevator shaft.

"They let us walk into the basement on purpose," Evren said. "It’s an airtight kill-box."

Calista’s breath hitched against Evren’s chest, her cheek resting weakly against his chest. "Vane... Director Vane knew about the agony runes’ failsafe," she whispered. "He set this floor up so whoever tried to rescue me would be trapped with me."

Before she could finish her sentence, the overhead pressure valves hissed loudly. Dense, pea-green gas poured from the ceiling grates, tumbling toward the floor like heavy liquid.

The air instantly smelled of burning acid and rancid sulfur... concentrated neurotoxin meant to liquefy human lungs in seconds.

Calista gasped, a fit of dry coughing wracking her frail body as the fumes touched her nose.

Amber immediately stepped in front of Evren and Calista, unleashing her phoenix flame. Brilliant crimson fire flared outward, forming a semi-translucent dome of intense heat around the three of them.

The roaring thermal barrier intercepted the green gas, incinerating the neurotoxin into harmless white steam before a single poisonous particle could reach Calista’s lungs.

"I can hold the heat dome," Amber said through gritted teeth, sweat beading on her forehead. "The lift is dead... where do we go?"

Calista weakly lifted her head from Evren’s shoulder, turning her chin toward the dark wall and directing his gaze with her eyes. "Behind the furnace..." she gasped in a raspy voice. "The primary slag flume!"

Evren looked down at her. "Does it lead up?"

"It’s the industrial exhaust shaft," Calista whispered. "It vents heavy waste directly upward into the Sub-Level 6 testing arena. There are maintenance rungs inside the conduit!"

"Move," Evren said, shifting Calista securely into his arm.

They rushed to the end of the hall.

An iron maintenance hatch was mounted into the bedrock, sealed shut with an automated magnetic lock. Evren struck it with a concussive physical blow, pulverizing the reinforced steel locking bolts and ripping the circular hatch clean off its hinges.

"Move," Evren commanded.

Zephyra scrambled up the metal rungs first with her whip-blade ready. Amber followed, maintaining her radiant thermal barrier to burn away the rising gas, while Evren carried Calista securely behind them.

Thirty meters up the dark vertical shaft, Zephyra pushed open the upper exhaust grate.

They tumbled out onto a cold concrete floor, leaving the toxic green fumes sealed in the bedrock abyss below.

The chamber they entered was massive.

It was a subterranean testing arena... a massive concrete amphitheater enclosed by reinforced blast glass and high-voltage perimeter fencing.

The air smelled of ozone, dried blood, and void-beast carcasses.

Suddenly, blinding white halogen floodlights flickered to life overhead, illuminating the entire arena.

Static crackled through the arena loudspeakers, followed by a smooth, cultured voice that echoed through the vast chamber, filled with chilling amusement.

"Impressive," the voice chuckled softly. "Truly impressive. You dismantled my wardens, broke my unbreakable Deep-Iron shackles, and survived a lethal neurotoxin flood."

Calista gasped against Evren’s shoulder, her eyes widening in sheer terror. "Director Vane..." she whispered in a trembling voice.

"You came seeking a cure, little thieves," Vane’s voice continued over the intercom in a cold and mocking tone. "Instead, you found your tomb. Did you truly believe you could walk out of this facility with my greatest prize?"

A low electronic tone chimed through the speakers, followed by the Director’s final command: "Release Subject Zero."
