Chapter 71: Chapter #71: Golden Strawberries

It had been quite some time since Celeste officially launched.

Most players in the community genuinely felt a profound sense of personal redemption after successfully conquering the mountain.

But there were always those hardcore players who insisted on pushing their limits day after day. Once the main story concluded, the game’s difficulty didn’t just spike; it completely doubled.

It was exactly like Hollow Knight.

Beyond the main narrative, there was the agonizing Path of Pain and the brutal bindings of Godhome.

Celeste followed the exact same philosophy, hiding massive amounts of post-game content behind the credits.

By discovering hidden cassette tapes throughout the regular levels, players could unlock the excruciating B-Side and C-Side variants of every single Chapter.

Ignoring these hidden tapes wouldn’t affect the core narrative experience in the slightest.

However, calling them "extra" felt like a massive understatement.

This content wasn’t some post-launch DLC; it was deliberately baked into the base game from day one.

According to Sprout Studio’s official statements, these alternate levels were designed to help players "break through their limits."

But the player base knew exactly how to translate the sadist’s corporate speak.

He said "break your limits," but what he actually meant was "break your keyboard."

In Hollow Knight, players naturally grew stronger as they journeyed through the subterranean bug kingdom.

They collected bizarre Charms, permanently increased their initial five masks of health, and upgraded their fractured nail using hard-earned Pale Ore.

When a player first dropped into Hallownest, their starting weapon was dull, chipped, and incredibly weak.

But after five trips to the Nailsmith, the signature weapon finally revealed its perfect, lethal form.

Once fully upgraded, players could use the Dream Nail on the Godseeker hidden in the Junk Pit to access Godhome. This was the exact location of the infamous Pantheons and Bindings that the hardcore community was constantly obsessing over.

The "four locks" were the brutal Bindings: restricting the player’s Nail damage, Shell health, Soul meter, and entirely disabling their Charms.

The "five doors" were the Pantheons, containing a grueling boss rush of forty-two enemies separated by escalating difficulty tiers.

The game asked a simple question: if you are stripped of your strength, can you still defeat your past enemies?

If one Binding wasn’t enough to break you, how about two? What about all four at once?

Ethan’s design mercilessly locked away every single power-up the player had earned throughout their journey.

Under all four Bindings, the player’s health was capped at four masks, their Soul reservoir was restricted to a single cast, Charms were entirely banned, and their fully upgraded Nail damage was reverted to its base state.

Just when players finally beat the game and thought they had mastered Hallownest, Godhome forced them to completely re-learn the combat mechanics from scratch.

Rolling the end credits was simply the gateway to a whole new world of pain.

"I genuinely thought this game had cured my depression, but I didn’t realize the A-Sides were just a warmup for pure suffering!" Silver’s face was twisted in agony.

He desperately wanted to uninstall the game and purge it from his hard drive forever.

But no matter how loudly he yelled at his monitor, he couldn’t actually bring himself to quit.

During his initial playthrough of Celeste, he had stumbled across the hidden B-Side cassette tapes scattered throughout the Chapters.

At the time, he hadn’t thought much of them.

If the game didn’t have hidden, brutally difficult alternate levels, it wouldn’t have been a true Nova title.

But the moment he finally managed to conquer the B-Sides, the game casually unlocked the C-Sides.

A cheerful postcard popped up on the center of his screen.

[Are you ready for the real challenge? C-Sides have been unlocked, and Golden Strawberries have appeared at the start of every Chapter! Good luck!]

"What the f*ck?!" Silver slammed his fist onto his desk. "There’s a C-Side too?!"

Back when he had finished the A-Sides, he had immediately launched into the B-Sides with full confidence.

In the final few Chapters of the main story, even though he was still dying constantly, he had actually felt incredibly relaxed.

It was a far cry from the blinding, hellish frustration he had experienced when he first booted up the game.

It was Ethan’s signature design loop: the player physically and mentally leveled up alongside the character.

But the second he started the B-Sides, he quickly realized he had completely forgotten who he was dealing with.

After surviving the Pantheon of Hallownest, he should have learned his lesson about the sadist’s post-game content.

How could he have possibly been arrogant enough to think the B-Sides would be ’easy’?

Even though the difficulty was completely absurd, he had gritted his teeth and stubbornly clawed his way to the end.

But when that C-Side notification popped up, absolutely mocking his hard-fought victory, his mental fortitude shattered. He slumped back in his chair, completely defeated.

[

Michal: The sadist is operating on a completely different plane of existence.

SLSleuth: I knew about the C-Sides the whole time. I just didn’t say anything because I wanted to watch Silver break down live on stream LMAO

spider597: Bro I laughed so hard. When I unlocked the C-Sides I literally went numb. It actually gave me my depression back.

In the A-Sides, there was still a decent amount of solid ground to stand on. But in the B and C-Sides, a player might go an entire Chapter without touching a single safe platform.

The entire level had to be cleared in a single, fluid chain of mid-air dashes, wall-bounces, and wave-dashes.

The community had quickly dubbed this relentless mid-air momentum the "Celeste Expressway."

So when the very first player in the world posted a screenshot of a 100% completed save file and tagged Sprout Studio on social media, the entire internet was shaken.

[@SproutStudio Nova, I did it! [Attached Image] Thank you to the entire dev team for creating such a masterpiece. I am so incredibly grateful to have experienced this journey.

The suffering you endure will eventually become the foundation beneath your feet. Just keep climbing to the summit, one step at a time.]

The attached screenshot displayed a staggering 202 total strawberries. The breakdown included 175 red berries, 25 Golden Strawberries, 1 Moon Berry, and 1 Winged Golden Strawberry.

The sheer impossibility of the Golden Strawberries was legendary.

To collect one, a player had to beat an entire Chapter from start to finish without dying a single time.

Celeste was famous for the loading screen tip that told players to "Be proud of your death count." That simple phrase validated the thousands of grueling deaths required to beat the game.

But the existence of the Golden Strawberries completely inverted that philosophy. You had to execute a flawless, deathless run.

The game’s difficulty ramped up exponentially with each passing level.

By the time players reached the DLC expansion, Chapter 9: Farewell, the level design combined every single mechanic and hazard from the entire game into one massive, brutal gauntlet.

Beating Chapter 9 was an awe-inspiring experience. It forced the player to look back and truly realize how far their mechanical skills had evolved.

It was a profoundly emotional feeling, exactly like standing at the peak of a real mountain and looking down at the path you had carved.

But to beat Chapter 9 in a single, deathless run just to secure a Golden Strawberry?

The concept was so mathematically absurd that seeing documented proof of it drove the gaming community absolutely feral.

[

Unsound14: Before this screenshot, I genuinely thought the Golden Strawberries were just a troll addition that no one could actually get.

Dragonking: I am looking at a max-level human being right now.

goonermaxpro: The hardcore gamers are actively evolving into a new species, and they are leaving the rest of us behind.

Руслан Мэнов: Yeah no, goodbye Golden Strawberries, my mental health can’t take that.

]

The official Sprout Studio account responded to the post almost immediately.

"Incredible achievement! ?? A staff member will be in touch with you shortly. Please check your direct messages. We’re sending you an exclusive, physical Golden Strawberry enamel pin and a custom mechanical keycap. Thank you so much for playing!"

The replies under Sprout Studio’s retweet were completely flooded with players begging for footage.

Everyone wanted to see the video of this absolute gaming god executing a flawless, deathless run.

While some players were hyper-fixated on mimicking the route, others were simply in awe of the sheer dedication on display.

"I think... this is what true passion looks like," Ruby murmured softly to her chat as she watched the uploaded deathless run.

She had barely managed to clear the A-Sides before completely burning out halfway up the B-Side climbs.

"No matter what field you’re in, people who genuinely love the craft and dare to challenge the impossible will always have my absolute, unwavering respect."
