Path to Becoming the Greatest Space Mercenary
Chapter 607 - 607 New Deal with a Witch (4)
If Delilah had Avery's interest throughout their conversation, she now had his undivided attention.
While the solar flare emitter he knew Vi'ivando had been forced to make was a very dangerous device, Avery had not thought about it overly much.
He had given everything he knew about it over to the authorities and let them follow up on locating the potentially cataclysmic piece of technology.
Still, it had the potential to destabilize stars. Causing untold damage depending on where it was deployed.
This made it impossible for Avery to easily dismiss what Delilah had to say.
"In around a month and a half from now, the emitter will be released into the Devlazra System's star. There may be no inhabited planets in the system, but the fourth planet in the system is home to several moons that have research centers on them focusing on new applications for nanotechnology."
"The plan is twofold. First to test out the effectiveness of the solar flare emitter on a fairly well defended target and to swoop in to obtain the protypes they're working on and the data they've collected."
After listening to Delilah about the details of this plot, Avery knew that he needed to do something to intervene.
Of course, he was not going to do so personally.
He did not have the time to wait around in the Devlazra System until the vessel transporting the solar flare emitter arrived, and it really was not his job to deal with the issue.
If not for the potential far-reaching catastrophes the device was capable of, Avery honestly would not have particularly cared.
'I'll contact Cerise and let her send this up the chain. Hopefully the Alliance Police can spare enough manpower even with a war going on.' Avery thought, quickly making plans with what to do with this new information.
There was still a little doubt in his mind about whether Delilah was telling the truth about all of this or not, but he doubted she was lying.
If she was, it would be easy enough to prove and even the slightest bit of goodwill she was trying to foster would be gone.
At that point, Avery would never even bother discussing anything with her again and move on with his plan to be done with her.
He was never going to trust her, though if she did hand over valuable information, he was willing to be slightly more accommodating.
"Fine, I'm willing to tentatively accept your deal. I'll make arrangements for you to return to the quarters you were in before and give you access to some forms of entertainment."
"And better food. I'm tired of receiving all of my fluids and nutrients through injections." Delilah said, motioning towards her arm, which truthfully bore no marks due to the healing she received after each dose of liquids and nutrients were delivered to her body.
"That will have to be a discussion for another time. After we've confirmed that you're not just feeding us lies for your own amusement or agenda. I'd like to point out that last time we gave you real food, you tried to choke yourself on it."
In response, Delilah just sighed and shrugged her shoulders as much as her current range of motion would allow.
She knew that she was currently in quite the bind and would have to slowly get into Avery's good graces.
"I suppose that will be acceptable for now."
While not fully, Delilah did look relatively satisfied.
Things may have been far from ideal for her, but she had lived a very long time if one considered each of her incarnations to be an extension of her existence.
With enough patience, she would see herself through this.
"You know, there is something that is bothering me. Why do you know about the solar flare emitter that Iniquus was working on? What connection did you have to him?" Avery asked, wanting to get to the bottom of this.
For nearly a minute, Delilah sat in silence, arranging her thoughts.
It was obvious that she was figuring out how much to tell Avery.
Or perhaps fabricating a believable lie.
"Hm, that is a difficult question for me to answer. There's a lot that I'm willing to divulge, but I can't go into detail about this. Let's just say that Iniquus and I worked together with a few other interested parties. There are a lot of powerful players involved, and you knowing won't really do any good. It will just paint a target on your back, and mine. Sometimes, ignorance really is bliss."
Avery frowned at Delilah's answer and was about to press her on it when he saw something unexpected in her eyes. Fear.
There was something about one of the people, or maybe people she and Iniquus had worked with that genuinely made her afraid.
Something she had not shown no matter what threats Avery had leveled at her.
'I don't think pushing her on this will be much help. Still, I'll try and look into it from another angle. Iniquus was involved, so we might be able to find some more information from that end.' Avery mused.
With a sort of agreement having been struck, Avery asked Delilah for the access codes and location or the ship she had spoken of as well as any other important information that she might be willing to share to improve her future living conditions.
"There is something I believe you would be interested in. I know that a certain group of Therianthropes have been hunting your wife and brother-in-law. They made quite the attempt while you were undercover from what I heard."
"During my time collecting information on you and your team, I did happen to follow a few threads left behind by those people. You never know when it might be useful to have an outside party to manipulate into helping you achieve your own objectives."
Delilah happily shared the coordinates of several outposts where agents working for Daxton had set up shop.
Overall, there were several thousand people out searching for and trying to capture Kasandra and Kaiden.
Showing just how much the warlord who had taken over their planet wanted them.
