Chapter 93: Exceptional

I left the belt done and went.

The hall was dark. The bedroom door was open past the click, lamp low, sheet turned down on her side only. Evelyn stood by the bed in the same shirt and shorts, hair still tied back, the mark on her neck faint in the low light. She looked at my waist first.

"Done," she said.

"Done."

"Good. Close it. Then hands where I put them. Kiss only means kiss only. If your mouth goes to my neck, I stop you. If your hands go under the shirt, I stop you. Say it."

"Kiss only. Neck is no. Under the shirt is no."

"Sit on the edge."

I sat. She stepped between my knees, not touching yet, and looked down at me like she was checking the rule had survived the walk. Then she leaned in and kissed me.

It was slower than the couch. Her mouth opened after a breath, not before. I kept my hands on the bed until she took them and set them on her waist, over the shirt, the place she had already allowed. She made a small sound into the kiss and did not pull my hands lower. I did not move them lower. The tied hair brushed my cheek when she tilted. I felt the heat of her stomach through the cotton and left it at heat.

She broke it to breathe.

"Again," she said. "Same. Don’t improve it."

I kissed her the same. She stayed longer. Her fingers found the back of my neck and held, not guiding, just there. When my thumb shifted on her waist she felt it and covered that hand with hers, pinning it, still kissing. A correction without a word. I took the correction. She rewarded it by opening her mouth a fraction more, tongue careful, then withdrawing it like she had shown me the edge and meant me to see it.

"Good," she said against my lip. "You’re listening with your hands. That’s rarer than listening with your ears."

"Where do you want them now?"

"Where they are." She kissed the corner of my mouth, still not the neck. "I’m going to sit on your lap. Facing you. The belt stays done. If you get hard, you stay still. We’ve done still. You can do it again."

She climbed on. Knees on the bed, either side of my hips, weight settling slow so the rule had time to hold. The shorts were thin. I felt her through them and through the done belt, and I did not rock. Evelyn’s hands stayed on my shoulders. She looked at my face from close, checking.

"Still," she said.

"Still."

"Kiss me like that. While I’m here. Don’t use the lap as an excuse."

I kissed her. She kissed back, deeper this time, and her hips made one small shift she stopped herself from finishing. I felt the stop. She felt me feel it. Her breath hitched and she laughed once, quiet, angry at her own body the way she had been in the kitchen.

"That’s mine," she said. "The shift. Don’t match it."

"I won’t."

She kissed me again to prove the rule could survive the want. It did. Her mouth was warm and unhurried. One hand left my shoulder and undid the tie in her hair, and it fell, and she didn’t fix it. The mark on her neck was closer now. I did not put my mouth there. She noticed the not, the way she always noticed the not, and her fingers tightened in my hair like a thank you she would not say.

"Lucas."

"Yeah."

"I’m going to lie back. You come with me. On your side. Kiss only still stands. The lap was a test. You passed. Don’t collect it."

We lay down. She on her back, me on my side, mouths finding each other without the weight of her on me. It was easier to keep the rule and harder to want to. Her hand stayed at my jaw. Mine stayed at her waist. The shirt had ridden. I did not follow the ride. Bare stomach met my wrist once, an accident of the angle, and I moved my hand back to cotton without being told.

"You fixed it," she said.

"It wasn’t a place you gave me."

"No. It wasn’t." She kissed me softer. "That’s the part I keep underestimating. You give the inch back."

We stayed in the kiss until the lamp felt too bright. She reached and killed it. Dark. Her mouth found mine by memory. The kiss changed in the dark, less performed, more breath. She made a sound she would have swallowed in the light. I swallowed it for her and did not chase it down her throat.

"Enough of the mouth for a minute," she said. "Stay. I want to say something while I can’t see your face."

"I’m here."

"I offered the kiss so I wouldn’t offer the other thing. It’s working. Barely. If I tell you to go, you go. If I tell you to stay, you stay on top of the shirt. There’s no third instruction tonight. I already spent the third on your hand at dinner."

"I know."

"Say which one you’re hoping for. Honest."

"Stay."

She was quiet. Her fingers traced my jaw once and stopped.

"Stay," she said. "On the shirt. Kiss when I kiss you. Sleep if I sleep. If I wake up and your hand is under anything, the couch is the rest of the week. That’s not a game. That’s the lock I didn’t turn."

"I’ll stay on the shirt."

"Then kiss me once more and stop. I want the last one to be mine."

I waited. She kissed me. Slow, closed at the end, a period. Her hand settled over mine on her waist, holding it to the cotton.

"Done," she said. "That’s the night. Don’t improve it in the dark."

"I won’t."

Her breathing evened. Not sleep yet. The house was empty around us. I kept my hand where she had locked it and my mouth to myself.

A while later she spoke, already half gone.

"Lucas."

"Awake."

"I know." A pause. "In the morning, buttoned until dinner still stands. And if I kiss you before coffee, it’s not a new offer. It’s the rest of this one. Don’t build a day on it."

"I won’t build a day on it."

"Good boy."

She turned into the pillow. The shirt stayed between my palm and her skin. I did not move it. Outside, nothing passed. Inside, her breath slowed for real this time, and the last of the lamp’s heat left the room.

I was still awake when she said my name again, clearer, not sleep.

"One more," she whispered. "Kiss. Then actually done. I lied about the last one being the last one."

I found her mouth in the dark.

She kissed me like she had meant the lie, and her hand on mine tightened, still on the shirt, still not under it, holding the rule and the want in the same place.
