Chapter 161: Chapter 162: Lily’s House

They finished eating with the kind of satisfied silence that comes from a meal that was simple but warm and filling and exactly what tired bodies and weary souls needed after a long day of walking and fighting and worrying about the future.

Daniel leaned back in his chair and patted his stomach and sighed with the kind of contentment that made all the aches and pains of the day seem somehow worth it. "That was good," he said.

Lily smiled with her kind face and her gentle eyes. "Thank you."

"You’re a good cook."

"I try."

Daniel looked at the others and his team and his family and his friends and saw that they were all finished eating and all leaning back in their chairs and all looking satisfied in their own ways.

Fluffy had a crumb on her face and a happy expression and a tail that was wagging gently behind her.

Cheeky had a spot of stew on her cloak and a small smile on her hidden face and a relaxed posture that suggested she felt safe despite being surrounded by people she didn’t know.

Mittens had a smile on her face and a warmth in her eyes and a stillness in her body that suggested she was learning to feel at home in places that weren’t filled with fear.

Paul was picking his teeth with the kind of casual indifference that came from having eaten well and having nowhere to be.

Lyra was stretching her arms above her head and feeling her joints pop and her muscles relax in the way that comes from finally being able to rest after a long day.

Brick Head was picking his nose with the kind of deep concentration that suggested he had found something truly fascinating up there.

Daniel smiled a warm and genuine smile. "All right," he said. "Let’s go."

They walked out of the inn and into streets that were quiet and dark and lit only by the stars and the occasional lantern that flickered in the windows of houses where people were sleeping or talking or living their lives in the peaceful way of people who had nowhere else to be.

Lily walked in front and led them through the streets with the kind of sure-footed confidence that came from knowing exactly where she was going and exactly how to get there.

She turned left and then right and then left again, and they followed her through the winding streets of a city that was sleeping and a night that was quiet and a world that seemed for a moment to be at peace.

Finally they reached a small house at the end of a quiet street that was made of wood and had a small garden and a warm light in the window that made it look like a beacon of safety in the darkness.

Lily stopped and turned and looked at them with her kind face and her gentle eyes. "This is my house," she said. "It’s small. But it’s home."

Daniel looked at it and its size and its simplicity and its warmth. "It’s nice," he said.

Lily smiled. "Thank you."

She walked toward the door and pulled out a key and unlocked it and pushed it open. "Come in," she said.

They walked inside and the house was small with one room and a bed and a table and a few chairs and a fireplace and a small kitchen area, and it was simple but it was cozy and warm and safe in the way that only places that are truly lived in can be.

Lily gestured at the room. "It’s not much. But you can sleep here. I have some blankets. Some pillows."

Daniel nodded. "Thank you."

Lily nodded and walked toward a small closet and pulled out blankets and pillows and handed them out. "Here," she said. "This should be enough."

Daniel took them and handed them to the others and they spread them on the floor and made makeshift beds with the kind of practiced efficiency that came from having slept in worse places than this.

Fluffy curled up in a corner and was small and warm and comfortable, her tail wrapped around her body and her ears twitching at every sound.

Mittens curled up beside her with her cat ears flat and her tail still and her body relaxed in a way that suggested she felt safe.

Cheeky sat against a wall with her cloak wrapped around her and her hood pulled low and her eyes closed and her breathing slow.

Paul lay down on his back with his hands behind his head and his eyes on the ceiling and his thoughts somewhere far away.

Lyra sat near the fireplace with her gun beside her and her eyes on the door and her body ready even in rest.

Brick Head sprawled on the floor with his arms spread wide and his legs tangled and his mouth open and his snoring already beginning to fill the room.

Daniel looked at them and his team and his family and his friends. He smiled a warm and genuine smile. "Goodnight," he said.

"Goodnight," they replied with voices that were tired but content.

The fire crackled and the stars twinkled and the night was quiet and peaceful in the way that nights are when the world is sleeping and the only sounds are the soft breathing of people who are resting.

Daniel lay on his back with his hands behind his head and his eyes on the ceiling and his mind racing with thoughts that wouldn’t quiet themselves.

He was tired and exhausted but he couldn’t sleep because he was thinking about the exam and the guild and the future and all the things that could go wrong and all the things that could go right.

Three days until the exam and three days until they would take the first step toward their goal, and he needed to prepare and train and get stronger, but he also needed to rest and sleep and recover.

He closed his eyes and took a breath and tried to relax.

Then he heard something—a voice that was quiet and soft and hesitant.

"Daniel?"

He opened his eyes and looked around and saw Lyra sitting near the fireplace and looking at him with soft eyes. "Yes?" he whispered.

"Are you awake?"

"I am."

She hesitated. "Can I... can I come over?"

Daniel nodded. "Sure."

She stood up and walked toward him and sat down beside him and was quiet for a moment before she spoke.

"I’m scared," she whispered.

Daniel looked at her with her worried eyes and her trembling hands. "Scared of what?"

"The exam. The guild. Everything."

She paused.

"What if we fail? What if we don’t get in?"

Daniel smiled a warm and gentle smile. "We won’t fail."

"How do you know?"

"I don’t. But I believe it."

Lyra looked at him with wide eyes. "You believe in us that much?"

"I do."

She was silent as she thought about it and processed it. "Okay," she whispered. "Okay."

She lay down beside him and closed her eyes and took a breath, and Daniel looked at her peaceful face and her relaxed body and her steady breath and smiled.

"Goodnight, Lyra," he whispered.

"Goodnight, Daniel," she whispered back.

The fire crackled and the stars twinkled and the night was quiet, and they slept.

The sun rose slowly and gently and the sky turned from black to purple to pink to orange, and the stars faded and the moon disappeared and the world woke up.

Daniel was the first to wake and he opened his eyes slowly and felt the soreness in his body and the aching in his muscles, but he was alive and breathing and here.

He sat up and looked around at the quiet house and the dying fire and the others who were still asleep.

Lyra was beside him with her head resting on his shoulder and her breath slow and her face peaceful.

Paul was on his back with his mouth open and snoring softly.

Cheeky was against the wall with her cloak wrapped around her and her hood pulled low.

Fluffy was in the corner curled up in a ball with her tail wrapped around her body.

Mittens was beside her with her cat ears flat and her tail still.

Brick Head was sprawled on the floor with his arms spread wide and his legs tangled and snoring loudly.

Daniel smiled a warm and genuine smile and looked at the window and the sunlight and the new day.

"Today," he whispered. "We prepare."
