Chapter 1417: Chapter 460: Charging the Capitol...Wait, It’s Downtown!
Am I... dead?
Walt, engulfed in darkness, gradually regained some consciousness and awareness, vaguely hearing surrounding sounds.
He couldn’t comprehend his current state, but excruciating pain seared through his body, as if a pack of hounds were relentlessly tearing at him, ripping every piece of flesh and bone, yet he was powerless to resist, left only to let these beasts do as they pleased.
Eventually, he fell back into slumber amidst the agony.
After an indeterminate amount of time, when Walt awoke again, the tormenting pain had vanished, and he opened his eyes to a glaring ceiling.
A feeling of anomaly lingered in his body; he raised his hand, discovering a conspicuous silver bionic skin patch on his right hand.
He pulled back the covers, revealing a complete body dressed in hospital garb, but his legs had also been replaced with full prosthetics.
The HUD interface of his bionic eye displayed that many parts of his body had been cybernetically modified.
He had been saved, but who was his savior?
Walt’s last memory was being ambushed on the street, with no recollection of arriving at a hospital...
Could I have been taken for experimentation?
But the General Motors Company doesn’t have such operations... perhaps he was sold to Saint Mary’s Hospital?
A bewildered Walt felt no relief from surviving, as he knew that falling into those hospitals’ hands only ensured a fate worse than death.
When those cold words that once only existed on paper become real and weigh down on oneself, that’s when the true meaning of despair becomes clear.
"Mr. Walt, it seems you’re recovering well?"
Just as Walt was enveloped in confusion, his personal network was forcibly accessed, a video window opened, revealing a familiar figure sitting inside an office.
Walt’s thoughts immediately pieced together the situation.
"Mr. Lin... was it you who saved me?"
Regardless of the truth, this was his reality now.
"Sort of; you’re lucky, some Adcardo people saw you beaten half to death by the roadside and rushed you to the hospital for emergency rescue; that’s how you managed to hold onto a thread of life."
Lin Miao looked at Walt with a smile; if it weren’t for the cybernetic implants, even if they managed to save him, he would have lost half his life, remaining a permanent resident of the ICU.
"Do you know who did this to you?"
"....."
"Howard Cargo, your former colleague, the one who set up the fake contract and identity to lure you into preparing goods just for the buyer to disappear."
Upon hearing this, Walt recalled the voice he heard; he couldn’t have imagined the extent to which the other would go just for vengeance.
He lowered his head.
"Ah... Mr. Lin, I admit my life isn’t worth much; just tell me what you want me to do."
Walt was a smart man; he knew that even if he died on the roadside, it wouldn’t be worth saving him to Lin Miao.
"Just check out the news first."
Lin Miao said.
"They weren’t targeting only you."
Upon hearing this, Walt hurriedly switched to the news channel, his face gradually growing grim as he read.
Even the same person sees different things in the same event depending on their status.
Walt desperately needed this job now; their hindrance to industrial upgrading was effectively cutting off his livelihood.
People like him in Detroit numbered not just in thousands but tens of thousands, not to mention the multitude of workers and veterans needing orders.
No matter how the news spins it, without a job, that’s the reality; changing the narrative doesn’t alter the truth.
Moreover, this isn’t targeting a specific race or community but the entire underclass.
Footage of suppression on Voice of the Horizon spread, even Europe couldn’t seal the leaks; General Motors plugging this would be a miracle.
Now they’ve gone mad, checking workers’ devices for Voice of the Horizon apps, attempting a physical blockade against hostile propaganda.
They seemed to forget one crucial point: Lin Miao isn’t some amateur politician; Horizon Corporation isn’t big, but its size at least rivals companies that crumbled under Zeta Technology’s onslaught like General Motors.
It’s naturally well-funded; while players are in Cuba, there’s still the Adcardo team and Efficiency Department at their disposal.
Lin Miao leisurely spoke.
"Recycling industry is a national policy, benefiting the state above and the populace below, yet these treacherous officials disrupt this, stubbornly clinging to their own turf, publicly challenging Washington and suppressing the populace, it’s pure treason."
The tone and word choice felt strange to Walt, nothing like the straightforward language used when communicating with the lower class earlier.
"You’re smart, so I won’t beat around the bush; remember that list you sent me? I want you to contact them, lead the Detroit citizens in street protests."
Upon hearing ’protest,’ Walt shuddered.
Protesting is a serious move, in a city controlled by corporations; this essentially aligns oneself with the left wing, and the company is inclined to eliminate any organizers swiftly.
Those street political activities spread from France have disappeared under this high-pressure regime; any trace of such movement gets suppressed before reaching the streets.
This act rivals selling company secrets in severity.
It’s not only General Motors and Lin Miao monitoring Detroit’s situation, the entirety of Michigan and even significant portions of New America are watching the industrial city’s future unfold.
If Walt took that step, he wouldn’t merely face local blacklisting but world-wide corporate watch lists.
