Plugged In: Reincarnated As A Demon Lord (Now I'll Conquer The World)
Chapter 78: Territorial Dispute
That evening, the village elders convene in a wide, hollowed-out chamber carved into the trunk of what must be the oldest tree in the settlement, the wood inside worn smooth and dark with age, faintly ridged where countless generations of claws have traced the same familiar grooves. A fire pit sunk into the center throws warm, flickering light across a dozen weathered, attentive faces.
Serenith drifts near the ceiling, arms crossed, watching the proceedings with the same quiet interest she shows to every one of these meetings now, and Kamiko settles onto a cushion beside Lucien with the easy familiarity of someone who’s done this exact routine in a dozen other villages already.
Lucien and Kamiko lay out their plans for the tribelands in careful detail.
The trade routes, the infrastructure, the flow of goods and prey and profit that will soon be running through every village along the line, this one very much included. Lucien does most of the talking, hands sketching shapes in the firelight the way they always do when he’s properly warmed into a pitch, while Kamiko fills in local specifics whenever he reaches for a name or a landmark he doesn’t have yet.
The elders grow visibly excited as the picture comes together, several of them leaning forward, tails flicking with interest, one elderly fox-kin gentleman muttering numbers under his breath to himself as though double-checking the math on his own fingers.
“The man’s an absolute godsend,” one of them declares to the table at large. “What he’s planned could turn this whole region into something the other kingdoms are forced to respect, instead of the laughingstock of the continent they’ve treated us as for generations. We’ve been dismissed by the other kingdoms and the elven courts alike as little more than uncivilized wilderness with better hunting.”
The village chief, an older fox-kin with silvering fur along his muzzle, leans forward. “Have you secured proper permission yet? From the Chieftain, I mean. Not gonna get much done without her say so.”
“Not yet,” Kamiko admits. “We’re working on it. It’s next on the list.”
The chief nods slowly, considering, some of the earlier excitement dimming a little at the question.
“Good luck with that, then. We’ve been trying for months now to get her to properly address a territory dispute we’ve had running with the wolf tribe nearby. Every message we send comes back with promises and no action, a letter here, a vague assurance there, and meanwhile our northern fields keep shrinking a little more every season.”
“I’ll be sure to mention it to her myself, when we meet,” Kamiko offers.
“Why not just go speak with the wolf tribe directly?” Lucien tilts his head, genuinely curious. “Sounds like they’re close by, from what you’re describing.”
The whole room bursts into laughter at that, not unkind, but the particular laughter reserved for someone who’s clearly never dealt with wolf-folk before.
“It’s not that simple, unfortunately.” Kamiko pats his knee gently, still smiling. “Wolf-kin don’t negotiate with words. Only violence really works for them. They’d tear our fox-kin friends apart before anyone finished a sentence.” A few of the elders nod grimly along with that, one of them tapping a claw against an old, faded scar along one forearm by way of evidence. “They’re simply bigger. Stronger. And not at all interested in compromise like most of the tribes out here.”
One of the elder fox-kin women seated across the fire, who’s had her eyes fixed firmly on Lucien for most of the evening, speaks up before she can stop herself.
“But he has the Beast Mother’s blessing. Surely that counts for something. And just look at him.” She says, lip catching between her teeth, “that big, broad, entirely too sexy—” She catches herself mid-sentence, going bright red under her fur, and the rest of the table dissolves into laughter at her expense, one of her fellow fox-kin nudging her with an elbow.
“We can’t ask someone else to fight our battles for us.” The chief shakes his head, more serious now. “This needs to be handled by the Chieftain properly. She’s the only one the wolves actually respect enough to listen to.”
“I really wouldn’t mind,” Lucien says, leaning forward. “And I doubt it would even come to anything physical. I’m quite convincing with words alone, as it happens. I managed to talk an actual goddess into blessing me, after all, without throwing a single punch of my own until she insisted on it personally.” He glances briefly toward Serenith, drifting near the ceiling, as if checking for permission he already knows he won’t get and doesn’t strictly need anyway. “Territory disputes are just negotiations that got tired of being polite. I’ve closed worse deals over less.”
“You’re a madman.” The chief barks out, laughing, shaking his head slowly. “But I won’t stop you, if you’re truly willing to help. Gods know nobody else has managed it.”
“I’ll speak to the wolves properly, then, once we’re through here,” Lucien says. “See what they actually want out of this before anyone assumes it has to end in bloodshed.”
Lucien bows his head slightly, one hand pressed to his own chest. “I aim to please.”
“We’ll see what we can do,” Kamiko adds, “but with Lucien along, I think we may just be able to figure something out.”
The meeting winds down not long after, the elders drifting off in twos and threes to discuss the news amongst themselves, several of them already speculating aloud about what a settled border might mean for next season’s planting, one enterprising elder already sketching out expanded field lines in the dirt with the tip of a claw.
Across the fire, Kamiko and Serenith both watch Lucien with matching warm smiles, both of them thoroughly, helplessly charmed by the sight of him.
Lucien is smirking, chest out, currently being fondled with open enthusiasm by a small cluster of thirsty fox-kin elders as he flexes obligingly for their benefit, clearly enjoying every second of the attention, entirely unbothered by the fact that he’s just volunteered himself, without a shred of hesitation, to walk straight into a den of wolves on nothing but confidence and a good vocabulary.
