Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Breaking Before Rebuilding

Dusk fell.

As the great contributor to today’s Gym challenges, Combusken stood behind Julian, eyes blazing as he stared at the feast being prepared as his reward.

Since Combusken had performed so well, Julian naturally brought out all his cooking skills.

A total of eighteen dishes, allowing Combusken to experience as many flavours as possible.

Human food did indeed have better flavour, but food made with Berries was still better at strengthening Pokémon.

Eating it occasionally to change the mood was fine.

Julian rubbed Combusken’s head and smiled gently.

"You really worked hard to eat this meal as soon as possible."

Combusken proudly raised his head.

"Combusken!"

For delicious food, he feared no hardship!

Because his appetite was growing larger and larger, Julian had referred to Fighting-type Pokémon and specially made a nutritional paste to satisfy the body’s needs.

It could save time spent cooking and eating.

Most importantly, he had given Maylene a large jar to take with her on her journey.

If she encountered a crisis, it could satisfy three days of her nutritional needs.

He also gave the formula to Paul.

If Maylene finished hers, Paul could make another jar for her.

After dinner, Julian received a call from Reggie.

"The two little ones have already met up with me. I’ll challenge the Battle Facilities while taking them to challenge Gyms."

Julian nodded.

"Reggie, how many Battle Facilities have you conquered now?"

Reggie showed a Badge case. Three Symbols lay inside.

"I’ve already beaten three. They really are much harder than Gyms."

"My Pokémon are also growing through the challenges. I should be able to successfully obtain all seven Frontier Symbols and become Sinnoh’s Frontier Brain."

"When the time comes, I’ll open my Battle Facility near Veilstone City and keep you company."

Julian smiled.

"Then won’t you steal all my challengers?"

Reggie smiled too.

"Speaking of challengers, how could I possibly steal them from you? I’ve even heard the title ’Julian Veyne, the Golden Touch’ here in Kanto."

Julian was somewhat embarrassed.

"How did it spread all the way to Kanto?"

Reggie introduced it with some excitement.

"Of course it’s thanks to the Trainer forum. I heard the Pokémon League intends to hold a four-region Gym Leader exchange tournament."

"They’ll gather Gym Leaders from Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Sinnoh, then rank them according to Gym type."

"Because of that, quite a few people on the forum are discussing which region has the strongest Gym Leaders."

"Julian, work hard. Try to bring back the title of number one Fighting Gym Leader across the four regions and bring glory to Sinnoh."

Even if it was only among Fighting-type Gyms, Chuck and Brawly would not be easy opponents.

Julian raised an eyebrow.

"Have they mentioned a specific time?"

Reggie shook his head.

"It’s all rumours. Whether it can actually happen is still uncertain. For a grand event like this, Gym Leaders either become famous or embarrass themselves."

"The Pokémon League is probably planning to use this method to screen out some Gyms that are just making up the numbers and close them down."

Reggie was actually a little worried about Julian. If there really was such a tournament, Veilstone Gym might be in some danger.

That was why he called Julian immediately after receiving the news.

Reggie’s words did indeed make Julian feel a sense of urgency.

With Hakamo-o, Gallade, Primeape, Sirfetch’d, Croagunk, and Combusken...

He was not worried about Veilstone Gym being removed.

He very much hoped to use this opportunity to spar with Fighting experts like Chuck and Brawly.

If the conditions were just right, Hakamo-o might even evolve during the tournament.

After all, in the games, the level gap between Hakamo-o and Kommo-o was not especially large.

Placed into reality, that should still have some reference value.

Of course, Hakamo-o had only evolved a little over a month ago. Julian did not expect him to evolve again in a short time.

In fact, within a year, he did not think Hakamo-o would evolve.

An experience like Ash catching Goomy in Kalos, then rapidly evolving it all the way into Goodra...

Julian did not dare imagine that at all.

That was more like Goomy having extraordinary talent, combined with Ash’s protagonist halo.

Reggie waved his hand and said, "Once the two of them obtain their first Badge, I’ll let them travel alone. Always following me won’t benefit their growth."

Julian nodded.

"I agree."

Reggie smiled.

"The next Battle Facility is near Vermilion City. They’ll have to challenge Vermilion Gym. Lt. Surge won’t be easy to handle."

Julian felt Lt. Surge did it on purpose.

A group of rookie Trainers, bringing Pokémon like Rattata and Pidgey to challenge him, would obviously annoy him endlessly.

Gym Trainers could not refuse, so he simply struck harder.

He intimidated those overconfident Trainers.

Someone like Julian, who treated even weak Trainers gently and guided them towards the direction of growth...

That kind of person would suffer~

"All right. I need to go train my Pokémon and work hard for the Gym type ranking tournament you mentioned."

Reggie nodded.

"Good. I’ll contact you later. I also need to work hard for the fourth Battle Facility."

When Julian arrived in the backyard, Hakamo-o and the others had already begun sparring.

But for some reason, Hakamo-o’s opponent had become Gallade.

Gallade was attacking with Brick Break, while Hakamo-o defended with Iron Defense.

This did not seem to be the training content Julian had arranged.

He stepped forward and asked, "Hakamo-o, Gallade, what are you training?"

After asking, he learned that Hakamo-o felt his dragon scales were still not tough enough.

Gallade felt his elbow blades lacked attack power.

A spear and a shield. This was precisely a meeting of worthy opponents.

Primeape also happened to want a change of opponent.

After fighting Hakamo-o too much, Primeape felt that the speed at which his anger rose had slowed.

It was perfect to try Sirfetch’d instead. Primeape felt that after training with Gallade, Sirfetch’d had grown much stronger.

Sirfetch’d’s integration of attack and defence really did give Primeape a rare experience.

After fighting for a while, Hakamo-o looked at the white marks on his dragon scales.

This would not do.

He had chosen Gallade as his opponent because Gallade possessed the strongest attack power on the team.

Hakamo-o hoped Gallade could break his dragon scales, just like Garchomp had.

A flash of inspiration struck him, and he thought back to the scene of his battle with Garchomp.

Hakamo-o looked at Gallade and cried out excitedly.

Gallade paused, then nodded.

After Julian finished watching Croagunk and Goodra spar, he turned back and looked.

???

!!!

Why had Hakamo-o started using Dragon Dance, and why had Gallade started using Swords Dance?

"Hakamo-o, what are you trying to do?"

Gallade completed three Swords Dance. His fighting energy had already condensed into something almost tangible, silvery-white energy wrapping around his body like armour.

Then Hakamo-o completed seven Dragon Dance. Purple energy formed a dragon-shaped vortex.

Although Gallade’s body had been somewhat strengthened through Bulk Up, it still could not compare to Garchomp’s.

He could not manage four Swords Dance.

Gallade’s elbow blade suddenly unsheathed, holy white light flowing along the edge.

Sacred Sword!

Hakamo-o raised his head and released a dragon roar that seemed to split the clouds. Terrifying purple light burst out from the gaps between his scales.

Outrage!

The moment he entered the Outrage state, his eyes turned crimson, and Dragon-type energy completely ran wild.

Gallade’s Sacred Sword contained the might of three Swords Dance, and even the air was cut with a shrill wail.

Hakamo-o did not dodge or retreat. He crossed his dragon-scale-covered arms into an X and forcibly collided with that holy sword light.

Boom—!!!

The instant white and purple energy clashed, blinding light swallowed the entire battlefield.

When the energy shockwave finally dispersed, Hakamo-o’s dragon scales on both arms had been completely shattered. Dark red dragon blood dripped down from his claws.

Gallade had been forced back more than ten metres, his feet carving two charred trenches into the ground. His trembling hands proved just how terrifying the impact had been.
