Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The Endless Battlefield

The sharp blades of wind struck down.

Beedrill was cut all over, and the powerful impact carried it straight into a tree.

Two rainbow-coloured beams shot from Butterfree’s ruby-like eyes.

Psybeam.

Beedrill was firmly pinned to the ground by Psybeam.

Before long, it stopped struggling.

Faced with Butterfree descending like a superhero, the two Caterpie looked at him with worshipful eyes.

"You’re amazing!"

Butterfree looked down at the two Caterpie from above.

"From now on, you follow me."

The two Caterpie answered in unison.

"Yes, boss!"

"You were being chased by Beedrill. You should know where there’s more food nearby, right?"

The Caterpie nodded.

"There’s a tree with sweet sap over there. We smelled it and went to eat, then ran into Beedrill."

"Let’s go. Boss will take you to eat."

Butterfree flapped his wings and flew in the direction the Caterpie had mentioned.

But the two Caterpie looked at each other and did not dare move.

"What? Afraid I can’t protect you?"

"We’re coming, boss!"

The sweet tree sap the Caterpie mentioned was another maple tree.

Butterfree decided to make this his new hunting ground.

The disappearance of so many Beedrill had caused the Beedrill colony to abandon the second maple tree he had found. As long as Butterfree kept hunting Beedrill at the third maple tree, he believed the colony would quickly abandon this one as well.

But before they gave up on it, Butterfree felt he should be able to eat at least ten Beedrill.

To be fair, there were far too many Beedrill in this forest.

Seeing the two Caterpie happily drink maple syrup, Butterfree also began eating: one mouthful of Beedrill, one mouthful of syrup.

"Have you seen any other Butterfree or Caterpie?"

The Caterpie nodded gloomily.

"Yes, but they were all stabbed to death by Beedrill’s twin needles and taken back to the nest to be eaten. Only the two of us escaped."

Butterfree nodded.

"If you two survived, then there should be other Caterpie still alive too."

"Eat more. Evolve as soon as possible. Then come with me to search for the other surviving Caterpie in the forest and protect them."

The Caterpie worked even harder to drink the syrup.

They drank until they were stuffed.

Then they lit up with white light and directly evolved into Metapod.

Butterfree was speechless.

Evolving in a place like this.

Were they afraid the Beedrill would not find them?

Shaking his head, Butterfree could only spit silk, stick it to the two Metapod, and carry them back to the bush he had used when evolving.

Back then, Butterfree had taken seven days to evolve.

These two completed their evolution in three.

But they only learned Gust and the three powders.

They did not learn Confusion.

Perhaps this was the difference in talent.

Over those three days, Butterfree hunted two more Beedrill at the new maple tree.

With two underlings helping him, Butterfree finally dared to continue deeper into Beedrill territory.

He discovered that Beedrill did not only hunt Caterpie.

As long as a Pokémon was not part of the Beedrill line, it fell within their hunting range.

Aside from three Caterpie, Butterfree also saved two Wurmple and one Paras.

The Wurmple repeatedly emphasised that they could survive by eating leaves.

Paras was even more extreme, saying it only needed to drink water and gnaw tree roots.

What else could Butterfree say?

Of course he accepted them.

The greatest gain was not the Pokémon.

It was that Butterfree found an Oran Berry tree.

He picked all five ripe Oran Berries from it.

After finding twenty seeds inside the Berries, Butterfree used Beedrill’s twin needles to dig holes and planted them all.

Butterfree did not know whether he would live to see the trees bear fruit.

But planting Berry trees would definitely raise his simulation score a little.

Although Wurmple and Paras said they only needed leaves and roots, Butterfree was not the kind of boss who ate alone.

His territory now extended across five maple trees. He could not finish all the syrup they produced by himself.

Better to let Caterpie and Wurmple absorb more nutrients and complete their evolutions as soon as possible.

After only seven days, Butterfree had gained five Butterfree underlings, one Beautifly girl, one Dustox girl, and one Paras underling.

Paras had a higher evolution level, so it could only look on enviously as its companions flew freely through the sky.

Now level 32, Butterfree was full of confidence and planned to attack Beedrill’s core territory tomorrow.

But beneath the dusk sky, a peerlessly beautiful white figure appeared before him.

Pheromosa

Julian had not expected an Ultra Beast to exist in this forest.

Pheromosa looked at Butterfree with interest and said, "You have been conscripted. Tonight, you will go to the front line and fight those dead birds."

"If you refuse, that tree will be your fate."

Pheromosa pointed at a large tree thirty metres away.

In the blink of an eye, it transformed into a white blur and kicked the tree in half, then instantly appeared in front of Butterfree again.

"Is it only me that’s being conscripted, or all of us?"

Pheromosa pointed at Butterfree.

"Only you. They’re too weak to meet the conscription standard. If you want to bring them, that’s up to you."

Butterfree suddenly understood why, after hunting so many Beedrill, he had never seen a truly powerful one.

They had all been conscripted by Pheromosa.

"All right. I still need to conscript other bugs. The battlefield is in that direction. You can report there now."

He had raised troops for a thousand days.

Now came the moment to use them.

Butterfree decided to bring all his underlings to the battlefield.

"Eat everything we can eat. There’s no guarantee we’ll have food tomorrow."

Following the direction Pheromosa had given, after night fell, Butterfree travelled about twenty kilometres and finally reached the Bug-type battlefield.

Countless Bug-type Pokémon of all kinds lay on the ground with exhausted expressions.

A Heracross with one blind eye flew over.

"New arrival? Want to join my battle group? I guarantee you’ll live safely for a month."

From Butterfree’s experience, someone like Heracross recruiting newcomers was recruiting cannon fodder.

"Sorry. I want to look around first."

Heracross’s attitude instantly cooled.

A Pinsir came over with a laugh.

"One-Eye, tricking newcomers into becoming your cannon fodder again? Newcomers should find a battle group of their own species. At least they won’t use you as cannon fodder."

"Butterfree and Beautifly battle groups are over there. Go by yourself."

"Thank you."

After thanking him, Butterfree immediately led his underlings away.

Sure enough, once Butterfree left, Heracross and Pinsir started shoving each other.

They had not flown far when they saw a forest filled with white wings.

A Butterfree with eyes even brighter than Julian’s flew over.

"Your luck is terrible. Being sent to the front line midway through the campaign means the birds on the other side have already trained for half a month. Every one of them has become much harder to deal with."

"Your chances of surviving a month have shrunk a lot."

"As for the ones you brought, send them back. Otherwise, you’re just giving the other side extra food. Besides, we Butterfree should leave some seedlings behind."

Hearing "extra food," Julian looked around.

The nearby trees had been stripped down to bare trunks.

Curious, he asked, "There’s nothing edible around here. What do this many bugs eat?"

Butterfree smiled.

"Bugs eat birds. Birds eat bugs. Tomorrow morning, the living eat, and the dead get eaten. I hope I can still eat with you tomorrow."

"When we charge later, remember to hide towards the back and be quick-witted."
