Julian frowned slightly.
For the kitchen to be assigned a mission to gather food themselves meant that the fighting on the front line had become intense enough that no spare troops could be drawn away.
He had to evolve as soon as possible!
Fortunately, his body had already accumulated enough. Evolution should happen within the next day or two.
Croconaw had no need to feel disappointed.
Before long, even if he no longer wanted to go to the battlefield, he would have to go.
After the middle-aged human soldier left, Machamp brought two Machoke over to call them to gather.
"Hurry and assemble. The mission is about to begin."
Bayleef swayed the leaf on her head.
"I wonder whether this gathering mission will be dangerous, and whether we can come back alive."
Mr. Mime comforted her.
"When I was still a Mime Jr., I participated in a gathering mission once. Didn’t I come back safely?"
Only then did Bayleef relax.
Croconaw was still somewhat disappointed.
"Why didn’t they conscript me to the front line?"
Julian comforted him.
"Don’t rush. If you become stronger in the kitchen first, won’t your performance shock everyone once you reach the front line?"
Croconaw instantly reignited his fighting spirit.
"That’s right. I need to become stronger! Ideally, I’ll evolve straight into Feraligatr!"
Julian shook his head.
Why not say you want to Mega Evolve while you’re at it?
How long had it been since he evolved into Croconaw, and he already wanted to evolve into Feraligatr?
The Pokémon from the other kitchen were Azumarill, Sneasel, Espurr, and Cyndaquil.
Beside them, there was also one Machamp and two Machoke.
Fifteen Pokémon in total.
That was the full strength of this gathering mission.
Machamp and the Machoke each pulled a two-wheeled cart.
Machamp said, "When the time comes, everyone will collect food together. All the food will be loaded onto the carts. We have the strength, so we’ll be responsible for pulling them."
"But if we encounter enemies, we’ll need you to cover our retreat."
Machamp and the Machoke were providing the most labour and taking on the greatest risk.
It was only natural for the two kitchens’ Pokémon to cover them.
No one had any objections.
There was even Croconaw, this attention-seeking idiot.
"If we run into enemies, leave them all to me!"
The Pokémon from the bakery had originally wanted to mock Croconaw a little.
But Azumarill stopped them in advance.
They were about to fight side by side. There was no need to start arguing now.
Besides, he had taken the initiative to help everyone hold back the enemy.
Why would they scold such a stupid fellow?
Perhaps this mission would end with Croconaw losing his life because of his recklessness.
And maybe that would buy everyone else a chance to survive.
A young human soldier ran over, holding a long spear.
"The general says you can set out."
Pulling six large carts, the group of Pokémon headed towards the orchard.
"That is one of our kingdom’s main estates for producing food. Aside from Berries, quite a lot of wheat is planted there as well."
"But it probably hasn’t been ground into flour yet. When the time comes, prioritise collecting Berries and wheat. Put other vegetables and fruits last."
Everyone answered softly, not in much of a mood to talk.
It was as if they were afraid that if their voices were even a little louder, they would attract the enemy.
Fortunately, they arrived smoothly at the somewhat ruined estate.
Judging from the traces, an intense battle should have broken out here.
Perhaps this was also the reason the kitchen needed to come out and transport food themselves.
Machamp said, "I’ve been here before and know where the cellar is. I’ll take you there."
After arriving at the cellar, Machamp opened the entrance.
"Is anyone inside? We are the team sent by King AZ to transport food."
There was no response.
Machamp took the lead and entered the cellar.
"There’s still a lot of wheat and Berries inside. Hurry down and move them."
Mr. Mime said, "Torchic, you don’t have hands, so stay outside and keep watch. We’ll go down and carry the food."
Julian jumped directly onto a wall.
"No problem. Go move the supplies with peace of mind. I’ll keep watch."
Torchic’s eyesight was very good, and Julian took in all the surrounding scenery.
Until they had emptied the first cellar, filled three carts, and tied them down tightly with hemp rope, nothing abnormal happened.
But after the second cellar was opened, Julian felt that something was wrong with the scent carried by the surrounding wind.
At that moment, a miserable scream came from the cellar.
Julian immediately turned around and saw a Quilladin being thrown out of the cellar by Machamp.
Quilladin frantically waved his hands.
"Don’t kill me! I have strength! I can help you carry things!"
Croconaw angrily questioned him.
"How can you surrender? You should fight the enemy to the death!"
Quilladin looked like he was about to cry.
"A knight brought a hundred soldiers and still couldn’t stop the enemy. Other than me hiding in the cellar, everyone else who survived, humans and Pokémon alike, was captured by the enemy army."
Quilladin drew quite a bit of Julian’s attention.
But Julian still felt even more uneasy.
"Stop messing around. I feel like something’s wrong. Captain, can you check with your Psychic power?"
Mr. Mime spread his hands.
"You’re overestimating me. How would I know such an advanced use of Psychic power?"
Sneasel likewise jumped onto the wall, his eyes sharply scanning the surroundings.
As a Dark type, Sneasel also sensed a trace of malice.
"There really is a problem."
Machamp frowned.
"Hurry and move everything! Once we empty this cellar, we can leave."
Each cart was loaded with over ten thousand catties of food. If it were not for Machamp and the Machoke, they would never be able to pull carts this heavy.
After filling all six carts, everyone hurried back towards the castle.
After they left, in the forest far away, a human knight said, "Remember, those Pokémon transporting the food can be let go, but the food must be left behind, and none of it is to be damaged."
"Understood?"
The soldiers lowered their heads.
"Yes, sir!"
Then they drew their swords or gripped their spears and rushed out of the forest.
Sneasel’s expression changed.
"Enemies!"
Croconaw immediately revealed an excited expression.
"Leave them to me!"
The timid Quilladin instantly became flustered.
"It’s over, it’s over! We’re going to be killed by the enemy!"
Julian hurriedly said, "Croconaw, use Water Gun on the ground. Sneasel, use a move to freeze the ground and slow the enemy’s pursuit as much as possible."
Croconaw still wanted to argue, but Mr. Mime immediately said, "Listen to Torchic. Right now, the most important thing is transporting the food back."
Julian reminded them again, "Don’t make the ice too thick. As long as it makes people slip, that’s enough."
The enemy soldiers charged after them enthusiastically.
As soon as they stepped onto the frozen ground, they immediately fell over in a heap, with a large number of them slipping at once.
After finally climbing back up and moving forward carefully, they discovered that the frozen area was only a small patch.
They sped up again.
Then they encountered another patch of frozen ground and slipped again.
"Houndoom, walk in front and use Ember to test the condition of the road."
Pulling the heavy carts, there was no way they could move too quickly.
Following Julian’s suggestion, they hid part of the food in the grass.
Everyone knew this was only self-deception. That food would inevitably fall into the enemy’s hands.
But if they could survive, who wanted to die?
Besides, they were still bringing more than half the food back to complete the mission.
However, the enemy still caught up.
At the very front were three Houndoom.
Julian’s expression changed.
Why are Houndoom everywhere?
Why is it always you?
When he simulated Lucario, he had almost been bitten to death by Houndoom.
Now that he was simulating Torchic, surely he would not be bitten to death by Houndoom again, right?
