Noah’s POV

The corners of my lips are pulled down as Kai continues to softly cry. I’ve never seen him display emotions like this before. Apart from when I bug him, I don’t have much experience with the last Deus brother.

I place a hand on his shoulder to show him that I’m here, and he lifts his head to look at me. He looks so devastated that I want to tuck him away and protect him. I feel so maternal about this alpha who’s way taller than me.

"Who is it, Kai? Should I get your brothers to find this jerk and beat him up? I can fight a little if Elias is there" I say and he shakes his head before dropping his face to the sheets again. Who got him this upset? I saw it in his eyes that he was upset last night, I just didn’t think it was this much.

I rub my hand on his shoulder while my omega whines for him. My omega sounds like he’s comforting a pup of ours. I soften my scent to soothe him, and he stops sobbing for a few seconds, but I stay still to listen to his uneven breathing.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I ask softly and he doesn’t respond.

"You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to" I add in an even softer tone to make sure I’m not pressuring him. No one wants pressure when they’re in this state. No one likes to be under a microscope in this state too, so I try not to make my presence too loud.

"The gaming alpha..." he finally speaks and his voice is thick with tears.

"Yeah?" I ask. I remember snatching his phone and seeing the unexpected text. I remember Kai saying the guy thinks he’s an omega. Poor pup, he must feel ashamed for being attracted to same sub-gender.

"We talked a lot..."

"You really liked him, didn’t you?" I ask and bury my fingers in his silky hair.

"I was in love with him" the younger alpha says and my bottom lip trembles for him. I feel like I might start to cry on his behalf. ’Was’ is painful. I can’t imagine not being in love with Elias anymore...it would kill me. One hand rests on my tummy while the other one stays in Kai’s hair. "And then what, Kai?" I ask softly and he shakes his head.

"I told him my real..." his voice cracks.

"Sub-gender" I finish the sentence for him and he nods. His pale complexion looks even paler. He looks almost sickly.

"He told you he didn’t want to continue talking with you?" I ask and Kai says a small ’no’ that sounds choked out. I go through my brain to try and figure out what this blind alpha must have said to my baby brother-in-law. "He told everyone in the group chat about me" he finally speaks and I gasp.

No.

"What the fuck? That’s messed up" I say angrily. That’s horrible. Rejecting Kai in private is understandable, but outing him in public is unfair. That’s bullying.

"It doesn’t matter" Kai says.

"Yes, it does. It matters. Your emotions matter. What the hell, bro?" I say in rage and Kai lifts his head to look at me like he’s never seen me before. He’s completely surprised at my language and my reaction.

"Give me your phone" I order and he shakes his head. "Why would I do that?"

"Because I said so. Now hand it over, Kai" I say sternly. I sound unrecognizable in my own ears, but this is how I’d protect a family member of mine...and Kai is my family member.

"Whatever your plan is, drop it. I deleted my account and everything. There’s nothing to fight for" he says with no light in his light blue eyes. I feel so sorry for him. I wish he’d let me climb into the bed and cuddle him, but I know he’d probably strangle me.

"I’m sorry you’re going through this, Kai" I whisper and he shuts his eyes briefly.

"It’s not the first time..." he whispers back.

"Oh Kai...have you spoken to Siren about this? I’m sure he can help" I say and he scoffs.

"Why would I bother Mama with something this small when he has an empire to run?" he asks and my heart melts at the title. He calls his mom ’Mama’, Kai is the real Mama’s boy, not Elias.

"Siren will always have time for you" I say with surety and he sits up. He looks at me as I stay on the floor, and the boy they call ’famine’ suddenly returns. He looks like the young man who gives just enough hope to keep you alive, but not enough information to save you from the death creeping up on you.

He looks cold again.

"Why would I bring my shame to him and dad? They’ve done their best for me...I can do my best for them too" he says.

"Hey...I don’t think Siren wants that for you..." I say and pull myself up.

"No, he won’t. But I’ll do it. That alpha is the last time I’ll be this stupid. I know now that there’s no love" he says as he gets off the bed.

"Kai...that’s not true" my voice fails as he heads to the bathroom and slams the door shut. This is horrible. I press my palms together and pray on his behalf.

"Moon Goddess, please give Kai a change of mind...please give him a happy ending too" I whisper and a knock on the door grabs my attention. The person doesn’t come in, but the she says something in Korean.

"I don’t understand..." I mutter under my breath and Kai opens the door with his face now wet.

"She said breakfast time" he translates her words and I nod. "Oh, right. I’ll see you soon" I say and walk towards the door.

"Kai...don’t miss breakfast and please don’t miss love" I add before leaving the room. I won’t lie, I feel a bit like a movie badass from my parting words, but I also feel bad for not being able to help.

As I shut the door behind me, I find my mate standing in the hallway. He’s leaning against the wall like he has been waiting for me all along. Elias holds a hand out for me and tilts his head.

"Breakfast?" Elias asks and I nod before slipping my hand into his.

"I love you" I tell him and he squeezes my hand. "I love you too, Angel" he says.
