Chapter 26: Chapter 26| Damian’s Cycle

The road thinned out around the three hour mark.

Not dramatically. Just the gradual subtraction of traffic that happened when you moved far enough from the city that the world stopped being somewhere people were going and started being somewhere people lived. The regional road had given way to something narrower and less maintained, hedgerows replacing the open farmland on both sides, the sky sitting low and grey above them with the particular quality of a sky that had decided on cloud cover for the day and wasn’t interested in reconsidering.

Sable had been driving for three hours without complaint and without asking to stop, which was consistent with how she did everything. Completely, without requiring acknowledgment, until the thing was done. But Damian had been watching her the way he watched things he was responsible for and he’d noticed the specific quality of focus that appeared when something was costing more than it showed on the outside.

He’d been tracking it without saying so. The twenty four hour cycle from the farmhouse kitchen was closing. He could feel it in the specific way his body registered the drain when the Milk Memory bonus started thinning at its edges, the floor that had been holding his reserves slightly higher than baseline beginning to lose its grip. If he didn’t refuel soon the bonus would reset entirely. The ×1.4 compounding he’d been building across four consistent cycles gone, the streak broken, everything accumulated from the farmhouse sessions wiped back to base.

[Flux: 49%]

[Milk Memory bonus: Active. Duration: 14 minutes remaining. Reset is imminent if the cycle is not completed.]

He looked at the number and then at the road ahead and then at Sable.

"Pull over," he said.

She looked at him briefly. Read the familiar look that was on his face. Then looked back at the road.

"There’s a layby four hundred meters ahead," she said. "I saw it on the map."

"Take it," he said.

She took it.

The layby was a widening of the road barely large enough for two vehicles, bordered on one side by a hedgerow thick enough to block the sightline from the road and on the other by a field that ran flat and empty to a distant tree line. No other vehicles. No buildings visible. Just the grey sky and the hedgerow and the specific quiet of the countryside that had nothing to say about whatever happened in it.

Sable cut the engine.

The silence that came in when the engine stopped was the particular silence of open country. Not empty exactly, birds somewhere in the hedgerow, wind across the field, the distant sound of something agricultural happening too far away to identify. Real silence. The kind the farmhouse had had and the city never did.

He looked at her.

She looked back at him with the directness she’d been looking at him with since the loading bay. Clear, unperformed, the specific quality of attention that had no interest in being anything other than what it was.

She reached for the seat adjustment and pushed it back as far as it would go, creating what space the car allowed, and turned toward him with the practiced ease of someone who had integrated this into the rhythm of their shared life without making it a production. She reached behind herself and unclasped her bra through her top. The specific motion he’d watched enough times now that it had its own place in the landscape of familiar things and pulled it free through her sleeve and set it on the dashboard. Her big boobs falled freely revealing themselves after been enclosed until this moment.

The car held its quiet around them.

The system flickered in his vision.

Damian leaned across the centre console and her hand found the back of his head before he arrived there, already settled, the naturalness of something that had stopped requiring thought. He took her left breast first, his mouth clamped at her nipples, drawing slowly, and the milk came warm and immediate and her breath seized with each draw, moaning in the rhythm of each time Damian suckled .

Her fingers moved through his hair. Not directing. Just present in the way they were always present now. The touch that had started as incidental and become something neither of them had named but both of them recognized.

He moved to the right breast watching the left breast fall with milk sipping from her nipples. He clamped his mouth on her right nipple drawing milk in rhythm.

She exhaled above him, uhmmm , slow, deliberate, her head tilting back against the headrest with the specific quality of someone letting something go that they’d been holding for longer than they’d meant to.

Outside the hedgerow held its position and the field ran flat to the tree line and the grey sky sat above all of it indifferent and unhurried and the world continued without any knowledge of the car pulled into the layby on the narrow regional road.

He stayed until the system confirmed.

Ding!

[Milk Memory: Refreshed. A-grade bonus reapplied. Duration: 24 hours.]

[Bonus compounding: ×1.5]

He sat back and licked the spilled milk on his lips. Sable wore her bra and refastened her top with the quiet efficiency of routine and reached for the seat adjustment and brought the seat back to the driving position and picked up her tablet from the dashboard and checked the navigation without making the transition into anything it wasn’t.

He looked at the compounding multiplier.

×1.5.

It had been ×1.4 at the farmhouse. One more cycle and it had climbed again.

’How high does it go,’ he thought, directing it at the system.

Ding!

[Milk Memory compounding ceiling: Grade-dependent. A-grade maximum multiplier: ×2.0. Current progress: ×1.5. Estimated cycles to ceiling: 5.]

He read it twice.

’Five more cycles to maximum efficiency on A-grade,’ he thought. ’And then what — it just holds there?’
