Chapter 34: Chapter 34| The Rhythm of Shared Survival

Damian turned from the window.

"The thing Dr Ere said he’d give me," he said. "That couldn’t go on the drive."

Sable looked up. "He said after we’d eaten. We ate. He didn’t bring it up again."

"I know," he replied. "I’m going to ask him."

He went downstairs.

Eren was in the main room, sitting in the chair closest to the fire with a book open on his knee that he wasn’t reading. He looked up when Damian came down without surprise. The look of someone who had been expecting the knock and had simply been waiting for it to come.

"The thing that couldn’t go on the drive," Damian said.

Eren looked at him for a moment. Then he set the book aside and reached into the breast pocket of his jacket. Not the outer pocket where the drive and the folded paper had come from, the inner one, closer to his chest, the pocket where people kept things they didn’t want to risk losing.

He produced a small object and held it out.

A ring.

Simple, unadorned, the kind of silver that had been worn long enough to develop the specific patina of something that had been part of a person’s life rather than just an object they owned. Thin band, no stone, no inscription visible from where Damian stood.

He crossed the room and took it.

It was lighter than it looked. And warm, not from Eren’s body heat, from something else. Something that registered in his Flux pathway the way the system registered things, not quite physical, not quite not.

"She sent it out three years ago," Eren said. "Through the same channel as the message. I don’t know how. I’ve learned not to ask how, when your mother is concerned." He looked at the ring in Damian’s hand. "She wore it from the day she joined the Prior Collective until the day they took her. It was the one personal item she had with her in the archive room." He paused. "I don’t know how she kept it through thirty years of captivity. I don’t know how she got it out. But she did. And she sent it to me with a single instruction."

"What instruction," Damian said.

"Give it to him when he’s ready," Eren said. "Her words. Not mine." He looked at Damian steadily. "I decided this morning that you were ready."

Damian looked at the ring in his palm.

It sat there in the firelight and the warmth of it moved through his hand in a way that had nothing to do with temperature and the system sat quiet at the edge of his vision for exactly three seconds and then..

Ding!

[Object recognized: Aria Laine — personal artifact.]

[Flux pathway resonance detected. Origin: Dual Axiom signature — maternal line.]

[Artifact function: Passive seal conduit. Physical contact accelerates degradation rate by estimated 15% per day of sustained contact.]

[Recommendation: Keep on person.]

He read it twice.

Then he looked up at Eren.

"It accelerates the seal degradation," he said.

Eren nodded slowly. "She thought of everything," he said. Not with surprise. With the specific quality of someone who had spent thirty years watching Aria Laine think of everything from inside a box that wasn’t supposed to allow for it. "Even from in there. Even after thirty years." He looked at the fire. "She’s been planning your arrival since before you knew you were coming."

Damian closed his hand around the ring.

The warmth of it settled into his palm and the fire moved in the hearth and outside the dark sat over the property and somewhere four hundred kilometers away in a facility that predated Nexarion’s current name a woman had spent thirty years making sure that this moment happened.

[Seal degradation progress: 1.8% → 2.1%]

It had moved just from holding it.

He looked at the number and then at the fire and then at Eren Jaeger sitting in his chair with his unread book and thirty years of waiting finally beginning to look like something other than waiting.

"Thank you," he said again.

Eren nodded again. Same nod as before. The shape of what needed doing, nothing more.

Damian went back upstairs.

Sable was still at the chair when he came back in. She looked at his hand when he entered. Glanced at the ring and said nothing, which was the correct response and the one he’d expected from her.

He sat on the edge of the bed and told her what Eren had said and showed her the system notification and she listened and documented and when he finished she looked at the ring in his hand for a moment with the expression she wore when she was integrating something significant into a framework that was already complex.

"A passive seal conduit," she said. "Built into a personal artifact. The Flux pathway resonance means it’s keyed specifically to your maternal line. It works because of what you share with her genetically and pathway-wise." She made a note. "Fifteen percent acceleration per day of sustained contact. If the current degradation rate was already moving the seal that’s compounding on top of compounding." She looked at him. "She built a delivery mechanism for seal degradation into a ring she wore every day for two years and then kept hidden inside a Nexarion facility for thirty years and then smuggled out through a channel that shouldn’t exist."

"Yes," he said.

Sable looked at the ring for another moment.

"She’s remarkable," she said quietly. Not analysis. Just the fact of it, stated cleanly.

"Yes," he said. "She is."

He put the ring on.

It fit as if it had been made for his hand rather than hers, which it hadn’t been, which the system apparently found unremarkable because it produced no notification about the fit. Just the warmth, settling deeper now that it was on his finger rather than in his palm, and the seal degradation counter moving in increments too small to read in real time but moving nonetheless.

He looked at Sable across the small room.

She was looking back at him with the directness she’d been looking at him with since the loading bay. The quality of attention that had no interest in being anything other than what it was. He noticed that she’d closed the tablet. He noticed that the stylus was set down on the chair arm with the specific deliberateness of someone who had decided something was finished for the night.

He looked at his Flux reading.

[Flux: 54%]

Passive dissipation had been running all evening through dinner and the conversation with Eren and the stairs and now this. The Milk Memory bonus was still active. Just four hours remaining on the twenty four hour window, but four hours was not enough to get through the night and the morning and the six hour drive back without the streak breaking.

He looked at Sable.

She was already moving the chair aside.

There was no ceremony to it by now. No adjustment period, no navigation of newness. Just the specific ease of two people for whom this had become the rhythm of shared survival.

Sable reached behind herself and unclasped her bra and let her big boobs fall free and the room held its quiet around them. The dark outside the window held its position over the garden and she looked at him with the directness she always looked at him with clear, unhurried, nothing performed about any of it.
