Chapter 36: Chapter 36| Cornered

Eren made breakfast like he did everything else.

Completely, without fuss, with the specific economy of someone who had been living alone long enough to have strong opinions about simple things. Eggs, bread, something preserved from the garden that had been put up in jars along the kitchen shelf. Coffee that was better than anything the farmhouse had produced and that Sable received with the expression of someone updating a previously held belief.

They ate at the kitchen table with the morning light coming through the window and Eren sitting across from them with the particular stillness of someone who had made a decision and was waiting for the right moment to act on it.

The moment came after the plates were cleared.

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and produced a folded document. Heavier paper than the note. Older. He unfolded it and laid it flat on the table between them and looked at Damian.

"I didn’t give you this yesterday," he said. "I needed to see who you were first. How you processed what I told you. Whether you were going to respond with urgency or with understanding." He paused. "Urgency gets people killed. Understanding gets people ready."

Damian looked at the document.

A floor plan. Hand drawn, precise, reconstructed from fragments and external observation over thirty years. Labels in Eren’s handwriting. Multiple floors. A structural detail circled in the deepest interior level with a single word beside it.

Hardware.

"The dampening field generator," Damian said.

"Its probable location," Eren said. "Your mother spent six months mapping the interior from inside. She couldn’t get the full picture but she got the structural location of the hardware, the approach corridor, the guard rotation timing for the interior perimeter." He looked at Damian. "She drew this from memory and sent it out piece by piece over eight months."

Sable was already photographing the document with her tablet.

Damian looked at the circled location. Eight months of his mother mapping her own prison so that the son she’d never met would know where to go when he was ready.

He folded the document carefully and put it in his inner jacket pocket. Close to his chest.

Eren watched him do it with the expression of someone watching thirty years of work arrive at the shape they’d always intended.

They left an hour later. The goodbye was quiet, the specific quiet of people who understood they would see each other again because the alternative was not an option. Eren stood at the door and looked at Damian with the thirty year look and Damian looked back and what passed between them didn’t need words.

"When you’re ready," Eren said. "You’ll know."

Then they were in the car and the cottage was behind them. They waved goodbye and finally drove off.

The road west ran the same way it had run east. Sable drove. Damian sat with the ring warm on his finger and the floor plan against his chest and watched the road and thought about dampening fields and approach corridors and a woman who had spent six months mapping her prison from the inside.

"We can’t go back to the farmhouse," he said.

"No," Sable said. "It’s compromised." She kept her eyes on the road. "We need somewhere with no connection to either of us and nothing we’ve touched since the escape."

"Zara’s building," he said. "Not her apartment. The building has vacant units on the fourth floor. If she can get us access we’re back in the city where the thermal environment works against anyone tracking us." He paused. "Dense, multiple exits, high noise."

Sable nodded once. Logic sound, conclusion uncomfortable, but accepted anyway.

They were two hours from the farmhouse when Sable said quietly. "There is a car behind us. Black colour. It had been tailing us for forty minutes since we crossed that junction . It varies its distance but doesn’t fall back far enough to lose visual."

He looked in the side mirror. Two vehicles back. Moving with the traffic the way someone moved with traffic when they wanted to look like traffic and had enough experience to mostly manage it.

"Speed up," he said. "Push it ten kilometers above the limit. See if it keeps pace."

It adjusted.

"Pull over," he said.

Sable looked at him.

"She’s had forty minutes of open road," he said. "If she wanted a forced engagement she had it twenty minutes ago before the traffic thickened. She wants to talk."

Sable pulled over. The black car pulled over twenty meters behind them.

Kira Claire got out and walked toward them with her hands visible and the pace of someone who had made a decision they were at peace with.

"I’m not running the Warden’s operation anymore," she said. "I closed the assignment channel this morning. Which means in seventy two hours he activates the extraction team when I don’t report in." She held Damian’s gaze. "I know about your mother. Facility Four. The Prior Collective. I know because the same person who built your system has been talking to me for eight months."

Damian went still.

"Eren Jaeger," he said.

"Yes," she said. "He’s been running two parallel operations. The trail for the researcher and the asset for the approach." She looked at him steadily. "I’m the asset. Two years inside Nexarion building the operational picture of Facility Four that you’ll need when you’re ready to go in. Seventeen retrievals, every one of them a Subject the Directorate wanted back before they could develop beyond their control." Something raw moved through her expression. "I’m done doing their work. Eren told me this morning you found him. That you’re ready to start moving toward something instead of just away from it." She paused. "I want to help."

The traffic moved past them on the road.

Damian looked at her for a long moment. He thought about the farmhouse yard at 0500 and the choice she’d made not to engage when she had every condition to. Forty minutes of open road just now and the same choice made again. A retrieval operative with seventeen completions who had twice been in the position to complete the eighteenth and hadn’t. And an old man in a cottage who had apparently been running considerably more than the two operations he’d told them about.

’She’s been his piece on the board the whole time,’ he thought. ’Same as the trail. Same as the system. Eren Jaeger plays a very long game.’

’He held several things back,’ Sable had said.

Kira Claire was apparently one of them.

"He didn’t mention you this morning," Damian said.

"He wouldn’t," she said. "Not until he’d seen how you handled what he told you. He called me after you left. He said you were ready." She held his gaze. "I’ve been building a safe house for eight months. Not Nexarion’s. Mine. Off every grid they have access to."

Damian looked at Sable.

She looked back with the expression she wore when she’d processed something and reached a conclusion and was waiting to see if he’d reached the same one.

He had.

He looked back at Kira.

Seventy two hours before the extraction team activated. A floor plan of Facility Four against his chest. A ring on his finger that was slowly dismantling a seal. And a woman who had spent two years inside the organization that built him, doing their work, and had apparently decided she was done.

"Lead the way," he said.
