Chapter 47: Chapter 47| First Move

The extraction team clock hit eighteen hours somewhere around midnight.

Damian knew because the system told him without being asked — a quiet notification at the edge of his vision that appeared before he could decide if he’d wanted to see it. He was sitting at the safe house window watching the street below and the city was doing what cities did at this hour which was continue without caring about the people inside it.

He hadn’t slept.

The Flux reading was low enough that he should have woken Sable an hour ago. He hadn’t. The refuel cycle was a need his body was registering with increasing insistence and his mind was overriding with the specific stubbornness of someone who had too much to think about to stop thinking about it.

The passive drain kept running. Indifferent. Consistent. The way it always ran.

He looked at the ring on his finger. The warmth of it was constant now — not fluctuating, just present, the way something was present when it had found its place and settled into it. His mother had worn this ring for two years. Had kept it through thirty years of captivity through means Eren couldn’t explain and had stopped trying to. Had sent it out through a channel that shouldn’t exist to an old man who had been waiting to give it to a son she’d never met.

He closed his hand around it.

’I’m coming,’ he thought. Not to the system. Not to anyone in particular. Just the thought, sitting in the quiet of the safe house at midnight with the city below and the clock running and two women asleep in the rooms behind him who had each made their own decision to be here for their own reasons.

The drain reached the point his body stopped being subtle about it. Not pain — the specific insistence of a system that had been running on empty long enough to start making its case more forcefully. He looked at the bedroom door.

Then he stood up quietly and crossed to Sable’s room. He knocked once — soft, enough to be heard without being urgent.

Knock.

In the other room he could hear nothing — Kira’s door was closed and the silence behind it was the specific silence of someone either deeply asleep or very deliberately not involved in whatever was happening in the hallway. He didn’t know which and didn’t need to.

Sable’s voice came back immediately. She hadn’t been asleep either.

"Come in," she said.

The refuel happened in the quiet of her room with the city outside the window and the clock running in the background of everything.

She reached behind herself and unclasped her bra without ceremony — the ease of something that had long since stopped requiring navigation. Her big breasts fell freely from their housing, full and warm in the dim light of the room, which had become regular scenery between them and had lost none of its effect for the regularity of it.

His hands found her waist first — steadying, grounding. Then his right hand moved up and closed around her left breast, his thumb grazing the nipple once before his mouth replaced it. He attached directly, drawing with intent from the first pull, and she gasped above him — sharp, genuine, the sound pulled out of her before she could decide what to do with it. "Uhmm yeah" sable muttered.

The milk came immediately. Warm, rich, the compounding bonus making itself known in the quality of it — deeper and more satisfying than the early cycles in the motel room had been, the difference between then and now as measurable as the difference between 25% Flux and whatever he was climbing toward. Her hand found the back of his head and her fingers pressed into his hair with the firmness of someone who had stopped pretending the touch was incidental a long time ago.

Her other hand gripped the bedsheet beside her.

He drew slowly. Deliberately. His tongue working against her and her breathing abandoning its attempt at control above him — ragged, unmanaged, the specific sound of Sable Wren not being precise about anything.

He moved to the right breast.

Her head dropped back.

"Damian..."

His name in her mouth with everything that had accumulated in it since the loading bay.

He stayed until the system confirmed.

[Flux: 25% + 65% = 90%]

Ding!

He sat back and redrew his mouth from her nipples, fresh milk spilling on the bedsheets. She refastened her top and looked at him in the dark of the room with the warm direct expression that had replaced the clinical distance so gradually he’d never been able to mark the moment.

"You should have knocked earlier," she said.

"Didn’t want to bother you," he replied.

She looked at him for a moment with the specific expression she wore when she was deciding whether something warranted being argued with or simply noted and filed.

"I’m your refuel source," she said. "Knocking on my door when you’re low is not bothering me. It’s the arrangement." She paused. The clinical framing of it landed slightly differently than she’d intended and she seemed to know it because she added quietly. "Besides. I wasn’t sleeping."

She looked at him for a moment. "The window," she said. "How long were you sitting there."

"A while," he said.

She nodded once — the nod of someone who had known that before she asked and had asked anyway because sometimes knowing and hearing were different things. She pulled her knees up and looked at the window.

"What are you thinking," she said.

"That we can’t keep running," he said. "That sixteen hours from now the extraction team activates and the search profile escalates and eventually someone runs the property connections and finds this building." He looked at the ring. "And that hiding isn’t the same as being safe."

She was quiet for a moment. Then..

"Facility Seven," she said.
