Puck Me Harder: A Stepbrother Romance [BL]
Chapter 160: The Echo of a Bullet
Noah’s POV
The klaxons screamed overhead, painting the warehouse in rhythmic flashes of blinding red.
High up on the steel catwalks, syndicate guards opened fire.
Sparks rained down as rifle rounds chewed through the concrete floor around my boots. I dropped into a tight crouch behind a row of rusted steel containers, bringing my assault rifle to my shoulder in one fluid motion.
Beside me, Damon leaned out from the corner. His submachine gun barked in controlled, aggressive bursts, stitching copper through the metal railings above.
"Two shooters on the east crane!" Damon shouted over the deafening alarm.
I leaned out, aligned my red-dot optic with the catwalk, and squeezed the trigger twice.
Crack. Crack.
The first guard took two rounds to the chest and flipped backward over the handrail, crashing twenty feet down onto an iron pallet. The second tried to scramble for cover, but I caught him through the shoulder, sending his rifle clattering down into the dark.
My right side burned. The sudden recoil pulled hard against the fresh stitches in my ribs, tearing the wound wider beneath the Kevlar plates. Warm, sticky blood soaked immediately through the dressing, trickling down my hip.
I gritted my teeth until my jaw ached, completely blocking out the agony.
Pain didn’t matter right now. Blood didn’t matter.
My brother was trapped beneath this floor, and I was going to tear this building down to the foundation to drag him out.
"David! Move the breachers up!" I barked into my throat mic.
"Bravo team, suppress the high ground!" David’s voice crackled through the earpiece. "Breachers advancing to the subterranean hatch!"
Our black-clad operatives moved forward in ruthless, disciplined fire teams. They swept the perimeter with overwhelming firepower, cutting down the remaining sentries before the syndicate could mount a coordinated defense. In less than two minutes, the main warehouse floor was littered with spent brass and motionless bodies.
I sprinted across the blood-slicked concrete, my boots slamming against the floor, Damon running stride for stride right at my back.
We reached the massive reinforced steel trapdoor embedded in the floor.
Two of David’s tactical operatives knelt by the heavy iron hinges, slapping slabs of commercial breaching explosive across the locking pins.
"Charges set, Master!" the lead operative yelled, backing away and unreeling the detonator wire. "Stand clear!"
Damon and I pressed our backs against the thick concrete pillars.
CLICK-BOOM!
A concussive shockwave ripped through the air, blowing the heavy iron door off its frame in a cloud of grey dust and twisted rebar.
Before the smoke could even clear, I broke from cover and vaulted through the jagged opening, sliding down the steep concrete staircase into the subterranean darkness below.
Damon dropped down right behind me, his weapon raised, clearing the fatal funnel.
At the bottom of the landing stood the reinforced blast doors leading into the civil defense bunker. Three guards were frantically trying to reinforce the steel deadbolts from the inside, their hands shaking in panic.
They never got the chance.
I kicked the shattered access panel open, raised my rifle, and fired three rapid shots through the viewing slit.
Two of the guards dropped instantly. The third tried to raise a shotgun, but Damon’s submachine gun rattled, putting four rounds clean through his chest.
The heavy blast door swung wide open with a metallic groan.
I stepped into the underground bunker, my boots crushing shattered glass into the dirt floor.
The air was damp, cold, and thick with terror.
Dozens of young hostages were huddled along the weeping concrete walls, screaming and shielding their faces, completely terrified that another squad of executioners had arrived.
"Clear!" Damon roared, sweeping his weapon across the empty corners.
David’s extraction team swarmed through the door behind us, their tactical flashlights cutting through the gloom. They immediately began cutting zip-ties, lifting traumatized students to their feet, and shouting instructions.
"University students, stay low and move to the exit!" David’s voice commanded firmly. "Medics are waiting at the surface! Follow the lights!"
I didn’t look at the other hostages.
My eyes tore across the crowded room, scanning every huddled figure, my heart hammering against my ribs with a level of frantic desperation I had never felt in my entire life.
Where is he?
Then, in the far corner beneath the flickering emergency lamp, I saw him.
Micah was standing upright against the wall, clutching the arm of a blonde girl.
Sunny.
Phoenix’s sister was alive, trembling, her clothes torn, but breathing.
And right beside her was Micah.
His hair was a disheveled mess, his cream sweater was stained with dirt, and the right side of his face bore a heavy, dark purple bruise. A dry cut split his bottom lip, smeared with dark crimson.
Seeing that bruise on his skin felt like a white-hot knife twisting directly into my heart.
A wild, suffocating rage clawed at my throat, but the overwhelming wave of relief that crashed over me was so intense that my knees nearly buckled.
He was alive.
Micah looked across the room. His glassy, tear-soaked eyes cut straight through the drifting gunsmoke and locked onto my face.
His breath hitched in a sharp, broken gasp.
"Noah!" Micah cried out, his voice cracking into pieces.
He let go of Sunny’s arm and ran across the dirt floor. He didn’t care about the smoke, the dead bodies, or the rifles. He sprinted straight toward me, his arms reaching out desperately.
I dropped my rifle, letting it hang against my tactical sling.
Micah crashed hard into my chest, throwing his arms tightly around my neck and burying his face into the collar of my Kevlar vest. His entire body was shivering uncontrollably, heavy, burning sobs racking his small frame as he clung to me like a child pulled from a shipwreck.
"Noah... you came... oh God, you actually came..." Micah wept, his tears soaking straight into my shirt. "I was so scared... I thought I was never going to see you again..."
I wrapped my arms tightly around his back, pulling him against me with every ounce of strength I had left. I buried my face in his messy dark hair, breathing in his familiar scent, completely ignoring the blinding, agonizing tearing in my stitched ribs.
Nothing else in this world existed. Just him. Safe in my arms.
"I’ve got you," I whispered, my voice rough, shaking with an emotion I could never hide in front of him. "I’m right here, Micah. You’re safe. No one is ever going to touch you again."
Damon stepped up beside us, his usual mocking arrogance completely stripped away. He reached out with a trembling hand, gently cupping the back of Micah’s head, his eyes brimming with raw, fierce affection.
"Hey, sweetheart," Damon murmured softly, his thumb lightly brushing away the tears on Micah’s cheek. "Told you we’d get you out of here."
Micah pulled back slightly, looking between the two of us with red, swollen eyes. Despite the terror he had survived, a fragile, beautiful smile broke through his tears.
"Both of you are idiots," Micah sniffled, laughing through his quiet sobs. "You really brought an entire army down here..."
Behind us, David’s men were efficiently guiding Sunny and the remaining victims toward the stairs.
"Master," David called out, wrapping a warm emergency blanket around Sunny’s shivering shoulders. "The perimeter is secured. The hostages are being evacuated to the medical transports. We need to move Sir Micah out immediately."
"Take him up, David," I said, reluctantly loosening my grip on Micah’s waist.
Before David could take another step—
"How incredibly touching."
A cold, smooth voice echoed from the dark threshold of the rear private office corridor.
The hair on the back of my neck stood straight up.
Every muscle in my body froze into absolute stone.
Micah’s face went chalk-white, the breath dying in his throat as his eyes widened in sheer, paralyzed horror.
We spun around simultaneously.
Standing ten paces away, stepping out of the shadows beneath the concrete archway, was Bernard Miller.
His white porcelain mask was gone, discarded on the floor behind him. His expensive navy suit was wrinkled, his dark hair disheveled, and his face was twisted into an expression of unhinged, venomous madness.
The calm, untouchable syndicate assassin was completely gone. In his eyes was the frantic, feral hatred of a monster who knew his entire political empire was crumbling into ashes.
In Bernard’s right hand was a heavy, chrome-plated .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol.
The black bore of the barrel was leveled straight at our chests.
"You ruined everything, Noah," Bernard hissed, his voice trembling with a terrifying, pitch-black fury. "You were supposed to burn twenty years ago with the rest of your worthless family. I should have put a bullet in your head the moment you crawled out of those ashes!"
I moved instantly, throwing my entire body in front of Micah, shoving him brutally behind my back while reaching down for the holster on my hip.
Damon reacted in the same split second, lunging sideways with his submachine gun coming up.
Bernard didn’t hesitate.
He didn’t listen to reason. He didn’t offer a final speech.
Bernard’s face contorted into a violent, bloodthirsty snarl, his finger tightening like a steel vice around the trigger.
"Die!" Bernard roared.
He pulled the trigger.
BANG!
A deafening, thunderous gunshot ripped through the subterranean bunker, echoing violently off the concrete walls.
