Past midnight.

The door of her bedroom clicked open with a soft silent turn of the brass handle.

A tall, dark silhouette stepped quietly into the dimly lit room.

Alastair stood in the doorway, his broad frame casting a long shadow across the carpet. He had just finished taking a cold shower; his dark hair was still slightly damp, clinging to his forehead, and his crisp white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, revealing his sharp milky collarbones. He had put on his normal, dark trousers, yet even the freezing water had done nothing to quench the dark, suffocating fire burning deep within his chest.

He had intended to give her some space tonight. He had told himself to wait, to be patient with his skittish little hostage. But the overwhelming, possessive desire raging inside his mind made it physically impossible to stay away from her.

Slowly, silently, he walked toward the bed.

His stormy grey eyes fixed instantly upon her sleeping figure. Lyra was curled up on her side, tangled messily in the thick white blanket. Her dark, silky hair was spread wildly across the silk pillows, framing her pale small face. No matter how chaotic she was during the day, right now... asleep, defenseless, and completely at his mercy... she looked impossibly, dangerously alluring.

His gaze drifted downward. One of her bare feet had kicked out from under the blanket, exposed to the cool night air.

Alastair sat down on the edge of the plush mattress, the bed sinking slightly under his weight.

He leaned down, his long, calloused fingers reaching out to gently trace the delicate arch of her bare foot and the smooth skin of her leg. His touch was cold against her warm skin, sliding upward like a snake.

In her deep sleep, Lyra felt a faint, lingering chill- as if a cold, smooth snake were slowly coiling around her leg. Subconsciously uncomfortable, she let out a tiny, soft whimpering noise and tried to pull her leg back under the protective warmth of the blanket.

But Alastair was far too fast.

His large cold hand clamped firmly around her slender ankle, halting her movement instantly. His grip was unyielding- absolute trap. Lyra stirred weakly, her head turning against the pillow, but the lingering effects of the sedative dragged her right back into unconsciousness.

Alastair stared down at her small, fragile ankle trapped tightly within his grip. It felt absurdly delicate in his large palm, so easy to restrain, so easy to break if he ever desired to keep her from running away.

So small... so adorable...

He leaned closer, his dark gaze lingering on her peaceful, sleeping face. He could smell the faint, intoxicatingly sweet scent of peaches radiating from her soft skin, mingled with the lingering fragrance of the soap from her evening bath. Seeing her silky hair damp around her temples, he realized she had taken a shower before getting into bed.

A slow, dark, possessive smile spread across Alastair’s sharp, handsome features. His grey eyes burned with an obsessive, untamed madness typical of a ruthless ruler who had finally found the one thing in the world he refused to ever let go.

He leaned down further until his breath brushed softly against her ear.

"You really thought you could run from me, little mouse?" he whispered, his voice a low, raspy purr in the silence of the night.

His fingers stroked the sensitive skin of her ankle, tightening his hold just enough to remind her body even in her dreams that she belonged to him now.

"You aren’t going anywhere..." he murmured darkly into the dark room, his thumb rubbing against her bone. "Never again."

The midnight air inside the master guest suite was still and heavy with an intoxicating tension.

Alastair sat motionless on the edge of the plush mattress, his large hand releasing her small ankle only to slide slowly, mesmerically upward along the warm contours of her arm.

His dark gaze fell intently upon Lyra’s sleeping face.

The soft glow of the moonlight filtered through the balcony curtains, illuminating her delicate features, her long eyelashes casting faint shadows over her pale cheeks.

His hand moved, long fingers gently brushing back a few stray strands of hair that clung to her forehead. Slowly, his thumb traced the line of her soft jaw, feeling the steady, rhythmic pulse beneath her skin, before sliding lower to brush against her lips.

They were impossibly soft- just as tender and fragile as he had imagined every time she rambled her chaotic, frantic excuses in front of him.

A primal hunger surged deep within his chest, black and consuming, threatening to break through his remaining composure.

Unable to resist the dangerous gravity pulling him toward her, Alastair leaned down slowly. His lips gently brushed her warm forehead in a tender touch- lingering there for a long moment as he breathed in the sweet, faint scent of peaches that seemed to belong only to her.

Then, slipping lower, his lips met hers.

It started as a light, feather-soft kiss, a quiet tasting of the sweet warmth she yielded while completely helpless in her sleep. But as the dark desire coiled tighter around his heart, the kiss gradually deepened, becoming heavier, possessive, and intense.

In her deep, slumbering state, Lyra shifted slightly, letting out a soft, faint whimpering breath as her head turned lightly against the silk pillow.

Alastair broke the kiss, pulling back just an inch. A low chuckle escaped his chest, vibrating against her warm cheek. She was simply too adorable, entirely oblivious to the dark, possessive snake coiling around her life.

He sat back up, watching her quiet, rhythmic breathing for several long minutes in the dark.

He knew with absolute, terrifying clarity what he wanted. He wanted her- completely, entirely, locked away where no one else in the world could ever see or touch her.

But first...

His grey eyes suddenly drained of all warmth, turning as cold and sharp as frozen steel.

...I have to deal with that annoying girl.

Standing up from the bed, he adjusted his shirt collar, cast one last linger glance at Lyra’s sleeping form, and silently walked out of the room, closing the door behind him without a sound.

Meanwhile, in the luxury guest wing on the third floor...

Elena was paced back and forth across the spacious room like a cornered animal. She was visibly worked up, her mind racing at a frantic pace as she tried to find any possible way to escape this fortress with Lyra.

Who knows what kind of awful condition Lyra is in right now?! Elena thought frantically, her hands shaking as she rubbed her arms. The way that terrifying man looked at her earlier in the foyer... I know that look. No, no... I won’t let anything terrible happen to my best friend! I have to get us out!

Suddenly, the silent hallway outside echoed with footsteps.

Click.

The lock on the guest room door flickered and turned.

Elena’s heart leaped into her throat. Spurred by survival instinct, she rushed over to the side table, grabbing a vase with both hands, lifting it defensively over her shoulder.

The heavy double doors swung open, revealing the towering figure of Alastair Voss standing in the doorway.

He stepped inside. His cold grey eyes casually swept over the trembling girl, landing on the vase held awkwardly in her hands.

"Do you truly believe that frail piece of glass will help you defend yourself against me?" his voice rang out, devoid of any human warmth.

"What do you want from me?!" Elena demanded, her voice trembling despite her desperate effort to sound brave. "Why are you keeping us here?!"

Alastair took a slow step forward, his hands resting casually inside his trouser pockets.

"Revenge," he replied calmly, as if discussing the weather. "Revenge against your bastard of a father, Victor Hart."

"Why drag me into your sick war then?!" she shouted back, her knuckles turning white around the base of the vase. "I have nothing to do with his business!"

"Because you carry his blood," Alastair said, his voice dropping with a coldness "And once a child of blood dies, only the father understands the true, agonizing pain of loss. He will understand it... down to his very bones. Just as I promised."

Elena’s eyes trembled with horror as she stared at the ruthless mob lord standing before her. "Tr-Trust me! I have no real connection with him! He abandoned me years ago! Killing me won’t hurt him!"

Alastair didn’t bother listening to her desperate pleas. Showing absolute disinterest, he turned on his shoe, preparing to leave the room as casually as he had entered.

"Wait!" Elena yelled out desperately. "What did you do to Lyra?!"

Alastair’s footsteps instantly stopped dead in their tracks.

The temperature in the room seemed to plunge below freezing in a fraction of a second. His grey eyes became icy as he slowly turned his head to glare back at her over his shoulder.

Elena swallowed hard, her pulse hammering in her ears, but she forced herself to meet his terrifying gaze. "If you dare to lay a single hand on her... if you hurt her...!"

"What if I already did?" Alastair interrupted, his raspy voice carrying a dark, provoking edge that sent a violent chill straight down her spine.

He turned his full body toward her, taking slow, imposing strides closer until he towered directly over her fragile frame. The sheer aura of dark dominance emanating from him made it hard for her to breathe.

"I can touch what’s mine," he whispered smoothly, a dark, dangerous smile curling the edge of his lips. "Whenever I please. However I please."

Hearing those words, Elena’s eyes shook violently in utter shock. Looking up into his face, she could clearly see the unhinged, obsessive madness gleaming deep within his grey eyes- a terrifying, possessive claim that left no room for negotiation.

She realized then, with terrifying certainty, that Lyra wasn’t just a hostage in this mansion...

She was trapped in the clutches of a monster who had no intention of ever letting her go.
