Raising the Villain in Wrong Way
Chapter 446: Agreement
"It would erase the Lin Estate from the memory of the continent. You would cease to have ever had a family."
He reached forward, setting the empty jade cup firmly onto the floorboards between them.
"The board is set, little Chef. The pieces are moving. You cannot force the harvest before the fruit is ripe. If you try to rip the veil away today, you will burn the entire field."
Ji’an gripped the heavy fabric of the white silk robe draped over her shoulders, Xie Wangchen’s robe, her knuckles turning white.
"So what am I supposed to do?" she hissed, the bitter, helpless frustration rising in her throat like bile. "Just sit here? Just keep flying this stupid leaf across the continent, playing chaperone to a bunch of teenage peacocks, cooking soup, and waiting for the sky to fall on my head?!"
Yan Zhaoge looked at her.
He saw the fierce, untamable fire burning in her eyes.
He saw the brilliant, relentless mind of a girl who refused to be a passive victim of fate, a girl who treated cosmic laws like kitchen guidelines and solved impossible arrays with the logic of a Friday-night dinner rush.
A slow, brilliant, unhinged, and deeply conspiratorial grin began to spread across the Sovereign’s handsome face.
It was the look of a senior software engineer who had just decided to help an intern bypass the company’s entire cybersecurity firewall purely because he thought the resulting chaos would be funny.
"I cannot tell you the answers, Ji’an," Yan Zhaoge purred softly, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear, ensuring that even within the soundproofed bubble, his words were barely a whisper against her hair.
"However..."
He paused, letting the silence stretch, the anticipation hanging in the air like a loaded crossbow.
"...the Vanguard Tour’s official itinerary is a diplomatic farce anyway. You are scheduled to spend two weeks at my monastery in the western dunes, undergoing ’thermal conditioning’ and ’refining your martial endurance’."
He tapped the side of his nose with his index finger.
"What if... during that fortnight... your Vanguard Leader were to suddenly, tragically come down with a terrible case of ’closed-door meditation’? What if you were forced to seclude yourself in my private, heavily warded, impenetrable personal sanctum for several days?"
Ji’an’s breath hitched. "What are you proposing?"
Yan Zhaoge’s amber eyes flared with blinding, thrilling heresy.
"I am proposing an unsanctioned field trip, Chef," he whispered. "I hold the keys to the transit arrays. If you wish it... I can take you to the Stargazing Tower myself."
The world seemed to physically stop spinning.
Ji’an stared at him, her jaw slightly open, her mind completely short-circuiting.
’He can take me to the Stargazing Tower?!’
It was the nexus, the source, the restricted, celestial fortress where all the answers were buried. It was a place that even peak-stage sect leaders could not enter without an imperial mandate from the Heavens themselves.
And this lunatic was offering to smuggle her through the back door like a bag of illicit groceries.
"You can get me inside?" Ji’an breathed, her heart hammering wildly.
"I am a decision-maker, little Chef," Yan Zhaoge smirked, his arrogant, untouchable swagger returning in full force. "I do not knock on the front gates. I have my own service elevator. But..."
His expression grew suddenly serious.
"There are conditions."
He raised a single finger.
"Condition One: You tell no one. Not the golden retriever, sword-obsessed aristocrat, the merchant. And most importantly..." He gestured with his chin toward the terrifying, black-frost-covered figure standing outside the barrier.
"...not your personal refrigerator. If Xie Wangchen catches wind that I am taking you to the Stargazing Tower, he will not merely attempt to accompany us; he will attempt to freeze the astrolabes to prevent you from discovering anything that might take your attention away from him. The man is a walking security hazard."
Ji’an glanced through the purple barrier.
Outside, Xie Wangchen had begun to carve a complex, glowing runic circle into the woven palm fronds with the tip of his scythe, clearly plotting an advanced spatial breach to shatter the bubble.
’He’s not wrong,’ Ji’an conceded internally, a bead of sweat rolling down her temple. ’Wangchen’s yandere paranoia is currently hovering at a DEFCON 1 level. If he finds out I’m going to a mystical tower with another man, he will literally drop an ice age on the western hemisphere.’
"Condition Two," Yan Zhaoge continued, holding up a second finger. "You cannot let your master find out. If Jiu Zui discovers that I have taken his precious, spatula-wielding disciple to the Stargazing Tower... he will not file a complaint with the Orthodox Council. He will immediately consume ten gallons of dragon-bone wine, forge a flying sword out of pure rage, fly across the continent at Mach 10, and attempt to beat me to death with his bare hands."
He grimaced slightly, as if recalling a very specific, deeply traumatic historical precedent.
"I am a Sovereign, Ji’an, but a sober Sovereign cannot defeat an aggressively drunk Jiu Zui defending his family. It is a biological impossibility. The man fights like a rabid honey badger that has achieved enlightenment. We would level half the continent in the crossfire."
Ji’an nodded slowly, agreeing with the assessment.
Master Jiu Zui’s protective instincts regarding her were completely unhinged.
If he thought she was walking into the most dangerous, politically volatile, cosmically cursed structure in the world, he would lock her in a cellar and set the rest of the world on fire.
"Why are you doing this for me, Sovereign Yan?" Ji’an asked, her voice quiet, penetrating, stripping away the humor. "You don’t do anything for free. You extorted a jug of wine from me just to sit in this chair. What do you actually want from me?"
Yan Zhaoge looked at her for a long, quiet moment.
The wind howled outside the purple dome. The desert sands shifted below.
"Because the machinery is breaking, Ji’an," Yan Zhaoge murmured, his voice lacking any trace of mockery. "The astrolabes are grinding their gears. The threads of fate that the Seers have charted for ten thousand years are beginning to fray, knot, and snap. The old ways, the rigid, ancient doctrines of the orthodox sects and the demon palaces, are failing to adapt to the shifting paradigm."
He smiled, a dark, brilliant, and hungry expression.
"And you... you are the glitch in the system. You look at an ancient, three-thousand-year-old defensive array and you see a kitchen ticket system, look at an apocalyptic heavenly calamity and you build a grounding rod out of cookware. You don’t bow to the script; you rewrite the code to suit your own convenience."
He leaned back, his purple robes billowing slightly as he folded his arms.
"I want to see what happens when the glitch enters the server room, little Chef. I want to see what you do when you lay your hands upon the astrolabe. And..."
He paused, winking boldly.
"...I expect a very large, complex, multi-course feast upon our safe return. With dessert. Do we have a deal?"
Lin Ji’an stared at the Overtime Boss.
It was dangerous, reckless, and a terrifying gamble that could result in her being vaporized by cosmic lightning or murdered by an ancient deity.
It was also her only chance.
Her only chance to find out who summoned her, why Lin Feng’s soul was hollowed out to create Shen Zechuan, and how she was supposed to survive the endgame of this cursed, trashy novel.
Ji’an didn’t hesitate.
She reached forward and firmly, aggressively grasped Yan Zhaoge’s pale hand, shaking it with the professional grip of a union representative finalizing a high-stakes bargaining agreement.
"Deal," Ji’an declared, her silver-flecked eyes blazing with unshakeable resolve. "We go to the Tower. But if you try to make me scrub your forges while we’re there... I am going to feed your astrolabes to the nearest void-portal."
Yan Zhaoge threw his head back and roared with laughter.
"A formidable businesswoman to the very end!" he cheered, snapping his fingers.
POP!
The purple soundproof barrier instantly dissolved.
The reality above the palm-leaf yacht rushed back into the space with the force of a bursting dam.
"BROTHER LIN!" Gu Zhiwei wailed, tumbling forward onto the woven fronds as the barrier vanished, his silk vest flapping wildly in the wind as he scrambled toward her on his hands and knees."
