'What exactly is happening here?'

As far as Contanias knew, the Empire's Guardian Dragon, Arculainisis, called Alon her father.

And the moment she met him, she had indeed addressed him as such.

That part had been shocking to witness, but it wasn't particularly strange.

However, no matter how much he thought about it, he couldn't understand what came afterward.

'Concubines...?'

Contanias looked at the two women standing behind Alon with trembling eyes.

Of course, it wasn't unusual for royalty to have multiple concubines.

That wasn't what felt strange.

The problem was that the Guardian Dragon herself had said it.

While hugging Alon as though he belonged to her, tears still hanging from her eyes and a smile on her lips, she had clearly declared:

'Greetings, my father's concubines!'

Of course, it wasn't something she couldn't say.

But even so, it wasn't something one would say in that situation while wearing the smile of a triumphant victor.

'Wait, what exactly is going on here?'

Blankly, Contanias began reorganizing the relationships in his head.

The Empire's Guardian Dragon, Arculainisis, and Alon had a father-daughter relationship.

The two women who came with him were apparently concubines, according to the Guardian Dragon.

Yet the Guardian Dragon was calling them "concubines" with a provocative smile.

Not as a daughter speaking.

But as though she were the wife.

And the moment that thought occurred to him, Contanias instinctively shook his head.

'No way~'

The conclusion felt far too absurd.

He knew perfectly well that even entertaining such thoughts was disrespectful.

And so, just as Contanias tried to dismiss the idea—

His gaze fell to Alon's waist.

More specifically, to the Guardian Dragon's tail wrapped around it.

'Remember this well, Your Highness. If the great Guardian Dragon wraps her tail around someone's waist, it means that person has become her mate.'

'Really?'

'Yes. Dragons generally only behave that way toward their mates.'

'I see.'

A memory from his childhood lessons surfaced.

Contanias's expression rapidly stiffened.

But only briefly.

“Hoo...”

He endured it once more.

His teacher had indeed said that.

However, the man hadn't truly been an expert on dragons.

He had merely repeated information found in old texts.

In other words, the information might not even have been reliable.

And just as Contanias tried to dismiss the thought again—

“What do you mean by that, Ar?”

Rine, who had practically had a hook floating above her head moments ago, finally spoke.

And the Guardian Dragon—

No, Ar—

Still crying tears of joy from meeting Alon again, answered:

“Father need not worry. From now on, this lawful wife shall support him.”

“...Huh?”

“Ah?”

Quiet exclamations escaped Rine and Penia.

And in an instant, the eyes of every soldier present—including Contanias, who had already been standing there with his mouth hanging open—turned toward Alon.

Naturally so.

The Guardian Dragon called Alon her father.

Yet at the same time, she called herself the lawful wife.

There was only one conclusion people could draw from that.

"..."

The soldiers stared at Alon as though they were looking at filth, completely forgetting that the Guardian Dragon was standing right beside them.

“...Um, Lord Alon. This is a little...”

“...Hmm.”

Even Evan and Deus looked at Alon with strange expressions.

And Alon—

“Wait, that's a misunderstanding!”

For one of the rare times in his life, he shouted before trying to assess the situation.

Shortly afterward.

Once Alon's desperate explanations had finally restored some sanity to the eyes of the soldiers and Contanias—

And after he had sent them all away—

“I believed in you, you know.”

“Mm-hm.”

Alon briefly glared at Evan and Deus.

Then he sighed and looked toward Ar.

She was still smiling brightly.

Her eyes were swollen from crying, and her tail remained wrapped around his waist.

“Beloved!”

The moment Alon looked at her, Ar spread both arms wide and smiled.

Anyone could tell she was asking for a hug.

Without realizing it, Alon embraced her.

If she had looked like a fully grown woman, he might have hesitated.

But Ar's human form was closer to that of a young girl.

'Though when I think about fantasy dragons...'

Then Alon suddenly realized something.

“...Your way of addressing me has changed.”

“Hm? Ah, you mean 'beloved'?”

“Yes.”

At Alon's nod, she laughed.

“Hehehe. This is all for your sake!”

“...For my sake?”

“That's right! Entirely for your sake~!”

What part of this was supposedly for his sake?

Alon wondered briefly.

Then—

“Mmm~ It all began after you disappeared.”

Ar naturally began telling the story of what happened after Alon vanished.

And Alon listened quietly.

After all, he wanted to know how she had become the Empire's Guardian Dragon.

So he focused on her words.

And after some time had passed—

“And that's how it happened.”

“So in other words, you became the Guardian Dragon for my sake?”

Ar nodded.

She had just finished telling a story far larger in scale than Alon expected.

“That's right! Entirely for your sake!”

Ar proudly declared this with a smile.

Alon reviewed her story in his mind.

After he disappeared, Ar had apparently lived alone.

Ordinarily, that would have been impossible for a Dragonkin.

However, she had managed because she wasn't Dragonkin.

She was a true dragon.

Honestly, that revelation had shocked Alon.

When he first saved Ar, he had been completely convinced she was Dragonkin.

After all, she hadn't seemed very powerful.

And she had nearly died so easily at the hands of the soldiers led by Baarma.

That made it even harder to believe.

Yet thinking back, Ar had never actually claimed to be Dragonkin herself.

In other words, Alon, Penia, and Rine had simply misunderstood because she had seemed so weak.

And now that he thought about it, Ar had occasionally referred to herself as a dragon before.

In any case, while living as a dragon, she eventually met a human.

And that human made her a proposal.

To become the Guardian Dragon of the Empire.

That human was the Empire's First Emperor.

And Ar accepted.

Because of the condition the Emperor offered.

The Emperor who had devoured half the continent offered her the remains and hearts of dragons that had been wiped out centuries ago by sin and blackness.

And Ar accepted.

Because she needed dragon hearts.

More precisely, she desired power.

Absolute power to protect what was precious to her.

And so Ar became the Empire's Guardian Dragon.

She absorbed dozens of dragon hearts scattered throughout the Empire.

“Beloved! Now I can protect you!”

So that she could protect Alon when they met again someday.

“...Thank you for thinking of me.”

“Hehehe. Isn't it only natural to think about you?”

Ar laughed happily at his gratitude.

Even while wrapped around his waist, her swaying tail clearly displayed her mood.

“Even so, there was no need for you to bind yourself to the Empire because of me.”

Watching her, Alon spoke carefully.

He truly appreciated what she had done for him.

However, he didn't want her sacrificing her freedom for his sake.

At those words—

“Mm, you needn't worry about that either, beloved.”

“...Really?”

“Of course! In the first place, one reason I became the Empire's Guardian Dragon was so I could give this Empire to you as a gift! That's also why I introduced you as my father!”

“...That's why?”

“Exactly! There is no one in this Empire above me! Therefore, if you are the father of the Guardian Dragon, then no one in the Empire stands above you!”

Ar wore an expression that practically said,

'Pretty amazing, right?'

And finally, Alon understood why she had publicly called him father.

“...A woman who brings an Empire as a dowry. You can't really compete with that.”

“I agree.”

Evan and Deus added their thoughts with unusually serious expressions.

However, they soon turned their heads.

Because Penia and Rine were staring at them with murderous looks.

“Ahem. Deus, perhaps we should step outside?”

“I believe that would be the wise decision.”

The two immediately left without hesitation after exchanging only those few words.

The moment they were gone, Rine—who had remained silent the entire time—finally spoke.

“Ar?”

“What is it, concubine?”

Creak—!

A somewhat chilling sound echoed from somewhere.

Yet Ar remained completely unconcerned.

“Why exactly are you calling us concubines?”

“I'd like to know that too.”

Penia agreed with a smiling face.

In response, Ar pointed at herself as though the answer were obvious.

“Me. Lawful wife.”

Then her finger moved toward the two of them.

“Concubines.”

Ar looked at them as though asking,

OK?

Penia's and Rine's smiles deepened.

Their smiles definitely deepened.

Yet strangely enough, the laughter gradually vanished from their eyes.

“So, could you explain what sort of logic led to those titles?”

Ar pointed at herself again.

“Me. Dragon.”

Then she pointed at the two women.

“Humans.”

Again she wore the expression of someone asking,

OK?

It was a look that would seem merely confusing to most people.

But to Penia and Rine, it was extraordinarily irritating.

The two exchanged glances.

What is she even talking about?

No idea.

Should we kill her?

Maybe.

Though neither spoke aloud, they somehow seemed to communicate perfectly.

Seeing this, Alon finally stepped in.

“Ar. First of all, I have no intention of getting married yet. And more importantly, I have absolutely no intention of marrying you.”

“Eh?”

Shock instantly appeared on Ar's face.

Alon quickly continued.

“Didn't you introduce me as your father?”

“...Is that strange, beloved?”

“...Do you think a father and daughter can marry?”

At those words, Ar finally returned to her normal expression.

“Can they not?”

“...Isn't that obvious?”

“Mmm~”

Ar appeared to think for a moment before speaking again.

“It's still fine!”

“Why?”

“Among dragons, marriages between relatives are quite common! If I remember correctly, I once heard that my great-grandmother and great-grandfather were also father and daughter!”

“That's information I never wanted to know...”

For a moment, Alon seriously questioned whether dragons were truly a race of wisdom.

But he quickly regained his composure.

“And Ar, those two are not concubines.”

“Hm? They aren't?”

“No.”

“Hmmm~?”

Ar tilted her head.

She looked genuinely unable to understand.

“...What is it?”

Alon asked.

And Ar—

“Well, because they're openly releasing pheromones that say they like you.”

She answered as though it were the most natural thing in the world.
