Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner
Chapter 871: A tangle
Noah stood in front of the carving a long time, the chamber’s mineral light settling steady now that the initial flare had faded, Storm’s low chuff still rising and falling somewhere behind him as he worked his way along the nearest wall.
’Okay,’ Noah thought. ’Slow down. Don’t just react to the shape of it. Actually look.’
He crouched closer to the panel, studying the rectangular carving framed against the V-pendant figure’s chest, the fine lines running in careful, even rows. Not decorative. Not the loose, sweeping style the rest of the chamber used for wings and fire and falling cities. This was precise. Deliberate. The kind of pattern someone carved when they were trying to copy something they’d actually seen, not something they’d imagined.
’That’s not art,’ he thought. ’That’s a record. Somebody who made this wanted it remembered exactly, not interpreted.’
He didn’t touch it.
He sat back on his heels instead, letting his eyes drift between the two figures again, the woman and the man, trying to actually build a picture instead of just reacting to each new detail as it surfaced.
’Start with her,’ he thought. ’What do I actually know. Not guess. Know.’
The pendant matched his own coin, confirmed by his system months ago, tied to his Ruler Bloodline, confirmed again just now by the system’s own refusal to say more than that. She appeared with dragons in every single carving he’d found of her so far, here and at the alpha dragon’s shrine both, always surrounded by them, always in some posture that read as protective rather than commanding.
’Protective,’ he thought, turning the word over carefully. ’Not owns them. Not rules them. Stands with them.’ He glanced at the burning city panel further back, the dragons falling out of formation, the woman’s absence from that scene entirely. ’And when the burning happens, she’s not even in the picture. Like whatever kept that city standing left when she did.’
He looked at the second figure again. The V-pendant. The carved screen.
’He’s not protecting anything,’ Noah thought slowly. ’Every panel with him in it, he’s alone, or he’s standing over something. The nest. The ritual gathering. And now this.’ He gestured faintly at the screen carving without touching it. ’If she’s the one who kept something together, he’s the one documenting it. Recording it. Maybe studying it.’
A chill settled low in his stomach.
’Studying it for what.’
He thought about the system’s own careful refusal to classify either of them, the flat insistence that lineage and function weren’t guaranteed to align, and found himself circling back to the exact contradiction that had been eating at him since the Zenomurph massacre.
’If I’m Sovereign-lineage and everything I do reads like Calamity function,’ he thought, ’then maybe the categories themselves aren’t as clean as the system wants to make them sound. Maybe a Sovereign isn’t automatically the protector and a Calamity isn’t automatically the destroyer. Maybe it’s more about what you actually do with whatever you are.’
He stood slowly, joints stiff from crouching too long, and looked around the chamber properly, letting the full scope of it settle rather than fixating on the two figures alone.
’Four pieces,’ he thought. ’I’ve got four actual pieces of this now, and none of them fit together cleanly yet.’
He started working through them out loud under his breath, quiet, mostly just to hear the shape of his own reasoning instead of letting it stay tangled in his head.
"One." He held up a finger, more habit than necessity. "The woman. Dragons, protection, my own bloodline tied to her somehow. Present when things were whole. Gone when they burned."
Storm’s chuffing paused behind him, ears swiveling toward his voice.
"Two." A second finger. "Him. The screen. Documentation, or study, or something other than either of those words. Alone in every panel. Standing over things rather than standing with them."
He walked a slow circle, eyes tracing back over the burning city panel.
"Three." He thought of Gigarose then, the whole pattern he’d already built out loud to himself after the Zenomurph fight, VR game, arena attack, Lilivil’s destruction, the medieval war, the modern Purge, disorder following her like a shadow across every era she’d touched. "Gigarose. Likely Calamity. The system wouldn’t confirm it, but I did the math myself, and I trust my own math more than I trust a system that only tells me things when it feels like it."
He stopped walking.
"Four." The last finger, and this one sat heavier than the rest, because it was the one piece he genuinely had no shape for at all. "The General."
He thought about one fight the general was in. The one with the collapsing-star punch, the way the man had folded light into his own fist and let its gravity pull him bodily forward into the strike, the Ruler Bloodline flag that had appeared in both their profiles unprompted, back on the alpha dragon’s world.
’He’s got the same lineage flag I do,’ Noah thought. ’Which should mean something. Should put him somewhere on this board, Sovereign or Calamity or whatever third thing might actually exist that the system hasn’t named for me yet.’
’Except I’ve got no class for him at all.’
He turned that over, testing it from every angle he could think of.
’He builds things,’ Noah thought. ’The Ark. EDF’s reformed command structure. The whole push to actually repair the relationship with Eclipse instead of letting the old grudge calcify. That’s Sovereign behavior if anything is.’ He frowned. ’But I build things too, sometimes. Did, before I started unmaking everything I touched instead. Doesn’t mean the label actually holds once you look at the pattern over enough time.’
He sat down against the base of the wall, directly beneath the burning city panel, and let himself actually think it through properly instead of circling the same four points without connecting them.
’Okay,’ he thought. ’What if this isn’t two sides. What if it’s not even four separate things floating independently. What if it’s a structure, and I’m just not seeing the shape of it yet because I keep treating each piece like its own isolated mystery.’
He thought about the woman and the V-pendant figure standing together in that one panel, close enough that whoever carved it wanted them read as connected, not coincidental. He thought about Gigarose’s own age, how far back her presence stretched, further than the medieval timeline, further than anything that should have let one person witness all of it.
’What if she’s old enough to have actually been there,’ Noah thought slowly, ’for whatever happened to this civilization. Not as a Calamity causing it from a distance. As something standing in the middle of it when it actually happened.’
He let that thought sit, uncomfortable, refusing to let himself either accept it outright or dismiss it just because it didn’t fit cleanly.
’And if Gigarose was here, or somewhere like here, during whatever actually killed off every dragon on this planet,’ he thought, ’then maybe the V-pendant figure isn’t some separate mystery at all. Maybe he’s connected to her the same way the woman with my pendant is connected to whatever I am. Maybe all four of these pieces are actually two pairs instead of four separate things.’
’Her and him. Me and the General.’
He sat with that, turning it slowly, testing for the crack in it the same way he’d tested the Sovereign-Calamity contradiction after the Zenomurph fight, refusing to let himself settle for an answer just because it felt satisfying to finally have one.
’That’s a theory,’ he thought finally. ’Not a fact. I don’t have anything close to proof. Just a shape that fits better than the alternative, which is four completely unrelated mysteries all showing up in my life within the same handful of months by pure coincidence.’ He almost laughed at himself. ’And I don’t believe in that many coincidences. Not anymore. Not after everything.’
Storm padded over and settled beside him, head dropping heavy into his lap, and Noah scratched absently behind one ear ridge, still staring up at the burning city.
"What do you think," he said quietly. "You’ve been sniffing around this place like you actually recognize something. Is any of this familiar to you? Some old instinct buried in whatever your species remembers?"
Storm didn’t answer, obviously. But his eyes stayed fixed on the burning panel too, and the low chuff in his throat had settled into something quieter, steadier, almost mournful.
Noah let the silence hold a while, the mineral light humming faint along every vein in the stone around them, the weight of everything he’d just pieced together settling slow into his chest.
’Four pieces,’ he thought again. ’Maybe two pairs. A woman who protected something and disappeared when it burned. A man who documented things and stood alone in every scene he’s part of. A Calamity old enough to have maybe been here for whatever actually happened. And a General I’ve got no class for at all, except the same bloodline flag sitting in his profile that’s sitting in mine.’
He looked down at his own hands, scarred, still faintly stained from the Zenomurph fight despite days having passed since then.
’I don’t know what any of it means yet,’ he thought. ’Not really. I’ve got shapes, not answers. Patterns I can’t fully trust because I might just be seeing what I want to see, connecting dots that only look connected because I’m desperate for this to actually make sense instead of being four separate things that happen to share a timeline.’
’But it’s more than I had an hour ago.’
He stood eventually, brushing dust off his pants, and looked around the chamber one last time, taking in the full scope of it, the dead civilization, the carved history nobody alive had read in who knew how long, the two figures who might or might not be the actual root of everything currently unraveling across human space.
"Come on," he said to Storm. "I think we’ve gotten everything this room’s going to give us without actual proof instead of theories."
Storm lifted his head reluctantly, clearly still invested in whatever scent trail had kept him occupied the whole time they’d been here, but fell into step beside Noah anyway as they made their way back toward the chamber’s entrance.
Noah paused once more at the threshold, looking back at the dim shapes of dragons still visible along the walls even from this distance, wings frozen mid-flight across stone that had outlasted whatever had actually killed every one of them.
’Two pairs,’ he thought again, testing the shape of it one more time before he let himself walk away from it. ’Her and him. Me and the General.’
’If that’s even half right, I’m standing somewhere in a story that’s been running a lot longer than anyone back home has any idea about.’
He stepped out into the open air, the alien sky stretching wide and indifferent above him, and started the walk back toward wherever Storm had left their gear, already turning the next question over before he’d even fully processed the last one.
’And if I’m in it,’ he thought, ’the real question isn’t what I am anymore.’
’It’s what I’m actually supposed to do about it.’
