Re-Awakened :I Ascend as an SSS-Ranked Dragon Summoner
Chapter 876: Crack in an old shell
The silence at altitude did not hold. It was never meant to hold.
In the thin, frozen air high above the ruined stronghold, Arthur Kaine stared down the length of Valor’s blue-green edge. The cold, razor-sharp steel was pressed flush against the metallic skin of his throat, close enough that the low, steady hum of the weapon’s voltage vibrated directly into his jawbone. Lucy Grey hung before him in the open sky, her face drenched in a thick, sticky mask of her own blood, her right bicep torn open, her armor fractured and hanging by ruin. She looked like a nightmare hauled out of a storm, her eyes burning with an absolute, blinding white current that refused to dim.
For two seconds, Arthur did not breathe. The shame of the position was a physical weight, cold and rancid in his chest. To be caught. To be measured, outmaneuvered, and held at the tip of a weapon by a girl who had not existed when he was already buried in legend.
Then, deep in his sunken, cavernous chest, a sound began. A dry, clicking rattle that rose through his throat and spilled past his blood-stained teeth.
He was laughing.
"Do you feel it, child?" Arthur rasped, his voice dropping into an impossibly smooth, resonant timbre, every syllable refined like hand-cut glass despite the blood bubbling at his lips. "That fleeting, intoxicating illusion of mastery? You stand upon the precipice of a mountain you did not climb, holding the blade of a giant, believing yourself tall."
"Shut your mouth," Lucy growled, her voice a low, grinding thunder. She did not flinch. She did not loosen her grip by a fraction of a millimeter. "You are going to fix him. You have lived for thousands of years. You have copied every bloodline, every stolen trick, every obscure metabolic power this galaxy ever produced. I know there is an ability in that hollow, rot-eaten mind of yours that can restore energy regeneration. You will find it, or I will carve it out of your chest."
Arthur’s smile widened, yellowed teeth gleaming against the dark blood on his chin. His eyes, deep in their sockets, flared with a cold, terrifying sophistication.
"How endlessly vulgar," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the deliberate, effortless cadence of an emperor delivering a decree to an executioner. "You speak of my repository as though it were an apothecary’s shelf, and of me as your apothecary. You lack even the intellect to comprehend what my son accomplished. One did not merely siphon your brother’s vitality; he unmade the foundational architecture of his cellular intake. It is an artistic absolute. To reverse it would require an act of re-creation, a divine dispensation. And you..."
His gaunt face hardened, the polite condescension snapping into a sheer, ancient malice that made the air around them freeze.
"...are entirely unworthy of grace."
Before the last word fully cleared his lips, Arthur moved.
He did not phase. He did not pull back. He just moved.
The crimson blood dripping from Lucy’s torn arm, the blood currently coating his own throat and chest, ignited. Blood manipulation fused with the deepest layer of his dark chi did not merely harden; it altered its fundamental kinetic state. The spilled blood on Valor’s edge violently expanded, transforming into a pressurized, dark-chi detonation that exploded directly between his throat and her blade.
BOOM!
The localized blast blew Valor’s head backward, breaking Lucy’s lock-grip for a split second. Arthur did not use the space to retreat. He stepped into the explosion, his emaciated frame suddenly fluid, horrifyingly fast, moving with the cultivated grace of an ancient duelist who had mastered every form of armed and unarmed combat before modern martial arts had names.
His skeletal left hand shot forward, fingers locked into a rigid spear-hand strike, encased in a dense, dark-chi-infused metal sheath. He drove it straight into the crack in Lucy’s chest armor.
CLANG!
The strike punched clean through the blue plating, shattering her breastplate and driving deep into her sternum. Lucy gasped, a plume of bright blood erupting from her mouth as the force sent her skidding backward through the clouds for two hundred yards, her boots carving glowing blue trails through the atmospheric haze.
Arthur did not let her stabilize.
He raised both hands toward the open sky above them. The bruised red storm clouds, spanning hundreds of miles across the hemisphere of the planet, suddenly began to turn. Not through electrical control, he did not possess lightning in his current three-ability state, but through raw, kinetic atmospheric displacement driven by colossal constructs of fused metal and stone pulled from the planetary crust below.
Across the entire continent, the earth groaned. Massive, mountain-sized spires of dark, iron-rich ore tore out of the ground, launching into the stratosphere like inverted meteors, orbiting around Arthur’s commanding hands.
"You speak of your brother as if his tragedy were unique," Arthur shouted, his voice elevated, polished, and thunderous, echoing across the entire sky like an organ playing in an empty cathedral. "I have extinguished entire lines of such ’prodigies’! I have watched dynasties far grander than the House of Grey weep at my feet, their histories reduced to ash, their names forgotten by the very stars they sought to conquer! Do you truly believe your little storm frightens a man who has outlived gods?!"
He brought his hands down in a sweeping, double-handed gesture.
A dozen mountain-sized metal spires, each weighing millions of tons and burning with a dark, reddish-white aura of dark chi, fell from the sky simultaneously, locked onto Lucy’s position.
Lucy, mid-air, spat the blood from her mouth. Her left lung was burning, her sternum cracked, but her mind was blindingly clear. She did not look at the falling mountains with fear. She looked at them like targets.
This was not Lucas’s fight. Lucas was the absolute hammer, the engine of pure force who broke things by existing. Lucy was the weapon raised on Raiju, trained in the high-gravity sparring chambers of the Grey Citadel, where tactics, spatial awareness, and lethal efficiency were hammered into young bloodlines until they moved faster than thought. She understood the geometry of air combat better than anyone alive.
"Then I’ll break your history too!" Lucy roared.
She did not dodge the first falling spire. She accelerated directly toward it.
She thrust Valor forward, but instead of a raw strike, she unleashed her innate Grey electrical pulse in a wide, high-frequency wave, a precise electromagnetic resonance pulse. The blue current swept over the mountain-sized metal spire, finding the dark-chi fusion joints where Arthur had bound the metal together.
In a fraction of a second, her electrical pulse broke the magnetic cohesion holding the spire together.
The mountain of dark iron shattered mid-fall into millions of jagged, car-sized boulders.
Lucy moved through the falling field of debris like an arrow through rain. She did not waste energy on massive strikes. She stepped from falling boulder to falling boulder, using her lightning as localized kinetic thrusters on the soles of her boots, changing direction in sharp, ninety-degree angles that defied momentum.
She closed the distance across the sky in three seconds, bypassing all twelve falling spires by unmaking their structural integrity as she ran through them.
Arthur’s eyes narrowed slightly as she burst through the last wave of shattered iron. His ancient mind, quick as it was, had expected an oversized blast, an arrogant display of power matching his own. Instead, she had bypassed his grand gesture with cold, surgical efficiency.
He reacted instantly. Shadow manipulation fused with blood.
As Lucy arrived, bringing Valor around in a blinding, horizontal executioner’s arc, Arthur’s body dissolved into a dark, swirling eddy of shadow and hardened crimson needles. The axe cleaved through the space where his head had been, cutting nothing but shadow smoke.
An instant later, he materialized directly behind her, above her blind spot.
He didn’t use a simple weapon. He shaped his dark-chi metal into a massive, multi-segmented guillotine blade attached directly to his skeletal right arm, swinging it down toward the base of her neck with the full kinetic weight of his descending mass.
"Slow, child!" Arthur mocked smoothly.
Lucy didn’t turn around. She didn’t try to raise Valor to block. She knew the angle was lost.
Instead, she released her grip on Valor entirely.
The axe dropped straight down toward the planet’s surface. At the same moment, Lucy dropped her own posture in mid-air, collapsing her body backward into an impossible, inverted backflip. The guillotine blade grazed her cracked breastplate, shaving off a curl of metal, but missing her neck by a hair’s breadth.
As she flipped beneath his strike, her boots came up, coated in a concentrated, knife-thin sheet of blue lightning.
BOOM!
She delivered a brutal, double-kick straight up into Arthur’s jaw.
The impact was deafening. The sheer, mechanical force of her Raiju-trained legs, amplified by her innate current, shattered Arthur’s metallic neck guard and sent him rocketing straight up into the high atmosphere, his gaunt head snapping back with a sickening crack of bone.
Lucy completed her flip, extending her right arm downward toward the falling axe.
The axe halted its fall two miles below, reversed direction with a sonic boom, and shot back up into her hand. She caught it without looking, her fingers locking onto the grip as she pushed her body into a vertical pursuit, shooting straight up after Arthur like a blue missile.
The fight broke through the cloud deck, bursting into the clear, starry expanse of the planet’s upper atmosphere.
Arthur was still ascending from the force of her kick, dark blood trailing from his mouth in floating, zero-gravity droplets. His jaw was visibly misaligned, his cheekbone cracked, but his eyes were filled with a terrifying, refined madness.
He wiped the blood from his chin with the back of his emaciated hand, his fingers reshaping the bone of his jaw with a sickening, dark-chi-driven squelch as he forced it back into alignment.
"Impressive," Arthur said, his voice quiet, carried through the atmospheric void by a thin layer of dark chi around his throat. "A martial display worthy of a high-ranking guard. But you remain fundamentally ignorant of what stands before you."
He spread his arms wide, the shadows around his body stretching out for miles across the curve of the planet below.
"When I have finished breaking you here," Arthur declared, his voice dropping into a deep, chilling, theatrical resonance, "I shall take my leave of this ruined rock. I shall travel personally to Raiju. I shall walk into the grand halls of your family, step over the corpses of your guards, and cut your parents down upon their own dais. I shall strip the Grey name from the stars, line by line, city by city, until the only monuments remaining in human space are those raised to me."
He leaned forward, his skeletal face contorting into an expression of pure, divine arrogance.
"The one true Original."
Lucy stopped her ascent fifty yards away, floating in the dark thinness of the upper sky. Her armor was shattered, her chest bleeding, her face soaked in dark, drying blood.
Hearing him threaten Raiju, hearing him speak of her parents, of her home, of her people as if they were livestock waiting for a butcher, something inside her quieted. The loud, screaming rage that had fueled her dropping into the stronghold transformed into something heavy, cold, and absolute.
"You won’t make it off this planet," Lucy said.
Her voice wasn’t a roar. It wasn’t a scream. It was a simple, absolute statement of fact.
Arthur sneered, his shadow manipulation expanding to swallow the light of the stars behind him. "And who shall stop me? You? With a broken chest and a stolen weapon?"
Lucy did not answer with words.
She brought Valor close to her body, but she didn’t prime the axe for a ranged wave. She did something Arthur had not seen her do before. She inverted the energy flow of the weapon.
Valor was an engine, a perpetual storm vessel designed to absorb ambient electrical power and project it outward. Lucy, using her deep, intrinsic understanding of energy manipulation, a mastery earned through years of grueling Raiju discipline, completely separate from anything Lucas had ever done, forced her own innate, bloodline lightning into the axe’s core in a violently reversed loop.
She wasn’t using Valor to amplify herself. She was using herself to overload the weapon’s internally until it began to melt in her hands. This was unprecedented because the Axe itself was designed to channel this very type of energy.
The blue-green light turned to a blinding, dangerous violet. The air around them began to ionize so fast that atmospheric pressure collapsed into a vacuum around her frame.
Arthur’s smile faltered. His ancient instincts, refined over millennia of surviving impossibly dangerous encounters, sounded an immediate, screaming alarm.
"You fool," Arthur whispered, real caution finally lacing his sophisticated tone. "You will destroy that weapon entirely."
"It’s just steel," Lucy said. "My brother is what matters."
She moved.
There was no sound, because there was no air left between them to carry it.
She bypassed the fifty yards instantly. Not through flying, not through a lightning strike, but by collapsing the localized space in front of her with the extreme gravitational-magnetic pull of the overloaded axe.
She appeared directly in Arthur’s chest space.
Arthur tried to phase. He reached for the shadow layer, trying to drop his mass into the dark floor of the atmosphere.
Lucy was ready for it. She didn’t strike with the axe blade. She drove the heavy, violet-hot pommel of Valor directly into the shadow construct beneath his feet, dumping the entire, volatile, overloaded loop of violent electrical energy directly into the shadow realm itself.
BOOM!
The shadow dimension beneath them violently detonated. The dark energy shattered, turning into a white-hot explosion of disrupted spatial light that forcibly rejected Arthur’s body, popping him back into real space like a cork from a bottle.
He was pinned in physical reality, his shadow manipulation completely fried for the next minute.
Arthur’s eyes went wide with genuine, horrifying shock.
"What—"
Lucy dropped Valor.
She let go of the priceless weapon entirely, letting it tumble away into the dark atmosphere behind her. She didn’t need the axe anymore. She was inside his guard, inside his range, and her hands were free.
She grabbed Arthur by his emaciated throat with her left hand, her bloody fingers locking around his windpipe like an iron vise.
Arthur gasped, his hands immediately coming up, metal manipulation forming razor-sharp spikes that drove into her left forearm, piercing her flesh, trying to force her to release him.
Lucy didn’t even blink at the steel driving through her muscle. She pulled him downward with all the terrifying, moon-shattering physical force of her Grey biology, dragging him out of the high atmosphere and slamming down toward the surface of the planet at atmospheric re-entry speeds.
They broke through the cloud layer like a falling star, a blazing trail of friction and blue current marking their descent.
"Wait—" Arthur rasped, his voice cracking as the pressure of the fall and her grip crushed his vocal cords. He tried to draw on the spilled blood on her arm, tried to shape it into a blade to split her throat, but Lucy’s right hand was already moving.
She didn’t use a technique. She didn’t name an attack.
She pulled her right fist back, her gauntlet shattered, her bare knuckles bleeding, and wrapped her hand in a dense, solid, white-hot ball of pure, compressed Raiju voltage.
Then she drove her fist straight into his face mid-fall.
BOOM!
Arthur’s skeletal nose flattened entirely, his cheekbones shattering under the sheer physical weight of the blow. The shockwave of the punch rippled outward through the air, creating a visible ring of compressed vapor that expanded for miles across the sky.
"Undo it!" Lucy screamed, her voice breaking through the roar of re-entry.
She didn’t wait for an answer. She drew her fist back and struck him again.
BOOM!
Arthur’s dark-chi metal armor shattered like cheap glass, fragments of black iron blowing away in the wind. Blood, his own plus stolen blood, spattered across her face, mixing with her own.
"I... I told you..." Arthur choked out, his ancient sophistication utterly crumbling under the barbaric, unrelenting physical violence, "...it cannot..."
BOOM!
A third punch hit him squarely in the left eye socket, fracturing the orbital bone and sending a spray of crimson into the clouds.
They hit the ground.
Not in the caldera. Not in the ruined stronghold. They slammed into a vast, flat expanse of solid basalt rock three miles outside the fortress walls, hitting the earth with the force of a kinetic orbital strike.
KABOOM!
The impact carved a two-hundred-foot crater into the solid basalt, sending a massive ring of shattered stone, dust, and shockwaves tearing across the plain. The ground trembled for miles around, the sheer kinetic energy of their landing causing small earthquakes that rattled the distant, ruined walls of the stronghold.
When the initial blast cleared, the scene inside the crater was not a duel. It was an execution.
Lucy Grey was on top of him.
She had mounted his gaunt, ruined body in the center of the shattered basalt, her knees pinned firmly over his shoulders, locking his arms into the crushed stone beneath them. Her face was entirely drenched in a horrifying mixture of her own dark crimson blood and his black, viscous gore. Her hair was wild, her left arm bleeding heavily from the metal spikes still embedded in her flesh, her chest plate ruined.
She looked down at the ancient Original beneath her.
Arthur Kaine was broken. His magnificent, thousand-year-old posture was gone. His face was a sunken, crushed ruin of split skin, exposed bone, and dark blood. His dark chi was flickering weakly around his frame, unable to keep pace with the sheer speed and localized physical trauma being inflicted upon his biological form.
He raised his crushed, bleeding face slightly, his remaining eye wide with an emotion he had not felt in three thousand years.
Absolute, humiliating terror.
Lucy drew her right fist back. The blue-green lightning of her bloodline pooled around her bare knuckles, so dense, so heavy, that the solid basalt rocks surrounding her knees began to bounce and rattle against the ground from the sheer vibrational pressure.
"Lucy..." Arthur wheezed, his voice no longer smooth, no longer polished, no longer that of a god addressing an insect. It was ragged, wet, and pathetic. "Listen... to me... the energy... we can... we can find another way..."
Lucy’s face did not soften by a millimeter.
"I asked you to fix my brother," Lucy said, her voice dropping into an icy, quiet abyss that chilled the very air in the crater. "You gave me a speech."
She brought her fist down.
BOOM!
The strike slammed directly into his cheekbone, driving his head six inches deep into the solid basalt floor. The shockwave forced a ring of shattered stone to launch outward, rocks bouncing and flying around her knees as the earth buckled beneath the blow.
Arthur groaned, a wet, choking sound rising from his crushed throat. He tried to lift his hands, tried to pool his dark chi to slip into a shadow, but the physical shock of the blow had disrupted his internal energy pathways entirely.
"Wai... Wait!" Arthur rasped, his hands twitching pathetically against the stone where her knees pinned him, his voice cracking on the syllable as he tried to turn his bleeding, ruined face away from her. "Wait... child... stop...!"
Lucy didn’t stop.
She pulled her fist back again, the lightning around her knuckles roaring like a caged beast, the rocks around them bouncing higher, the ground groaning beneath her weight.
"You don’t get to tell me to wait," Lucy whispered.
And she brought her fist down again.
