Chapter 216: Chapter 87: The Enigma and Boundary of the Dream

"Exactly. So when the next person connects with the initial audio, even if the frequency is a perfect match, the system will just follow the original script and generate a completely new initial room," Wen Xiao said, nodding in agreement.

Yu Xian fell into thought. The explanation made sense; it was like a WeChat group chat. If everyone left and deleted their chat history, the group would cease to exist.

"But if we think of this dreamscape as a group chat," he said, looking up at Wen Xiao, "when the original host leaves, what happens if there are still several other members in the room? How does the system decide who becomes the new host? What’s the logic for transferring authority? Any thoughts?"

"Maybe it’s first come, first served?" Wen Xiao set down the headphone cable, tilting her head in thought for a moment before her brow furrowed.

"But... even though we still don’t know the logic for transferring authority, thinking about it this way... this might raise some new problems."

"What kind of problems?" Yu Xian asked.

"It looks like any games or applications we develop in the future won’t be able to have ’hot updates’," Wen Xiao mused.

"Hot updates?" Yang Yiyi asked, looking at her in confusion.

"Yes, hot updates. To put it simply, they’re live updates—adjusting the dreamscape’s content while people are still inside," Wen Xiao explained to Yang Yiyi.

"But if you combine the logic we just discovered—that a live connection takes priority over the blueprint—with the fact that the dream script only resets when there’s no host..."

Yu Xian understood the predicament. He picked up where she left off:

"Meaning, as long as a single person remains in the dream, that dreamscape will keep running on the initial script. Any modifications we make or new things we add to the script later on will have no effect in that room."

"Exactly. It means that as long as one person doesn’t log out, that world can never be updated to a new version." Wen Xiao nodded, a troubled look on her face. "Not unless we can forcibly sever everyone’s connection, but as of now, that seems impossible. The script’s developer doesn’t have ’admin privileges’ either."

The living room fell silent for a moment.

The problem was genuinely thorny. If they wanted to build a vast, continuously updated virtual dream world, the inability to perform hot updates meant that once they released a dream script, they’d likely never be able to take it back or modify it.

As long as a steady stream of people kept logging in from different time zones, that dreamscape would persist forever, like a ghost room.

"There’s still something I can’t wrap my head around," Yang Yiyi said, finally breaking the long silence.

"What if the command is to generate something that the ’host’ has no memory of? For example, Xiaoxiao didn’t actually know the contents of that physics textbook. What would be inside it?"

Yu Xian froze. ’That’s a good point.’ It was a problem they’d overlooked during their tests. ’Would the dreamscape just randomly generate something based on a vague impression?’

"There are too many unknowns here that we just don’t understand. The only way forward is to feel our way through it, testing things one by one to clear the fog," he said softly.

Wen Xiao bit her lip, saying nothing.

Silence.

Then, another silence.

Tonight, silence was Jiangcheng’s anthem.

Yu Xian felt that when it came to this bizarre "Dream Net," they were like primitive humans who had just discovered fire on a lightning-struck log.

They didn’t know what fire was or the nature of heat. All they could do was rely on instinct and their limited knowledge, carefully adding kindling and probing its boundaries.

He glanced at the clock on the wall, then at the two silent women, and decided to try and break the tension.

"Why don’t we get some dinner first?"
