Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space
Chapter 1347 - 1219: Aren’t You Tired?
Chapter 1347: Chapter 1219: Aren’t You Tired?
Here, once Zhou Jiao saw them off, she too settled into a chair for a rest. Even though she didn’t have to do any chores, she still felt quite tired, especially mentally.
"Auntie, should Ping’an have a banquet in his hometown when he gets married?"
Here we go again...
Zhou Jiao really regretted letting her son bring his girlfriend over today. What’s up with this Mai Sui, stirring up trouble? And at the dinner table, she just brazenly asked about their dating history.
If her son wasn’t certain about his partner and just brought her home for the elders’ approval, having a lively character wasn’t a big deal. Her son, May 1st, was active too, but being overly so just made one look foolish.
All morning, she was busy changing the subject, just worried that the young girl might get upset from being teased. Although the Qiu Family didn’t have their family’s status, they were not ordinary.
She was starting to doubt whether the Mai Sui she had always thought highly of had grown crooked or if she had been unleashed too freely in Beijing without any setbacks.
"My brother still has plenty of time."
Mai Sui rolled her eyes defiantly at May 1st, "How would you know? You’re about to go abroad."
"That’s why I said it’s still early. I need to have time to come back for the wedding. Once I go over, I’ll have to stay for at least half a year before returning."
May 1st changed the topic, observed Little Jiu pour a cup of water and hand it to his mom, and gave her an approving smile.
"Liu Yi, so Ping’an is sure, what about you and Little Tangtang?"
Liu Yi furrowed his brow, "Second sister, aren’t you tired?"
"Feeling shy?"
Liu Yi stood up upon hearing that, "Mom, I’m going to lie down for a bit."
"Go ahead."
Mai Sui blinked in surprise and looked at Zhou Jiao, "Auntie, is Liu Yi really angry? No way, it was just a joke."
Zhou Jiao sighed inwardly and smiled at her. Too lazy to say more, she wasn’t going to speak ill of her son, nor did she want to persuade further.
Someone like her, not even working for a year would someone call her a good girl. As an aunt, whether she said too much or too little, it wouldn’t be suitable.
Especially not in front of May 1st and Little Jiu.
Her silence didn’t mean May 1st wouldn’t speak up, "My brother isn’t that petty. But you are impressive; the last person who teased him got slapped by him directly."
"Huh?"
May 1st smiled with meaning, "Weird? What’s weird about that! The guy who got hit even had to swallow his pride and apologize to my brother.
Who did he think he was? Just the son of a bureau chief, with no self-awareness, not knowing who my maternal grandfather is, and who my parents are?
Trying to joke about my brother, he thinks he can? There are no such foolish folks in Beijing. Rumor has it that guy was sent back home by his father, true or not, I don’t know."
May 1st didn’t mind emphasizing to her the meaning of power and authority; it might have been exaggerated but if they didn’t get a scare, these people really wouldn’t read the room.
Initially, he thought with his grandfather back last night and the many guards checking around, the commotion would help them learn a bit about what hierarchy means.
Sadly, whether because his father’s brother gave them confidence or they haven’t learned their lesson, they’re bouncing around today when they should be leaving.
After speaking, May 1st didn’t bother to observe Mai Sui’s expression, turned to Zhou Jiao, "Mom, everyone is resting now. Why don’t you go back to your courtyard to nap?"
"No, I’ll chat more with you. Once you’re gone, our family will return to the Big Courtyard, all cold and deserted."
No wonder they’re mother and son.
May 1st, following her words, with a hint of complaint, "That’s why being in a high position comes with no freedom. Now even Aunt Xiao Hui doesn’t like to come to our house, who can stand being checked right at the gate?"
"There’s nothing we can do, the rules are like this. Our family is different now; your dad wouldn’t dare act rashly even if he wanted to return home."
May 1st clapped his head, "Right, if you hadn’t mentioned it, I would’ve forgotten. My dad’s secretary has to be paired up; I heard from my buddies that he’s gotten those under him to now be afraid of over-assigning guards."
"Alright, I’ll remind him later."
"Forget it, you rest a bit first, I’ll go find my dad. At this time of the day, who knows how many fish he’s caught with my grandfather."
"Can you find him?"
"Quite easy, the guards around mean he’s there, the target couldn’t be larger." May 1st stood up, "Second sister, Little Jiu, are you coming?"
Mai Sui, who had been in a daze, shook her head but then nodded, "Okay, I’ll go with you, Auntie, you rest first."
"Alright, be careful, remember to bring an umbrella."
Once out the door, after reflecting for a long time, Mai Sui hesitated, glanced at May 1st, and sighed, "May 1st, I was worried the guest on her first visit would find it awkward."
"It’s fine." May 1st casually replied, sighing inwardly. The intention was good, and he believed that.
But awkward?
In their circle, accompanying elders at gatherings, who dared to chatter nonstop? While it hadn’t reached the point of silence during meals or rest, manners had to be observed.
It just showed that being from different environments, they weren’t suitable for deep connections.
"But it seemed like Liu Yi was really angry, and I don’t know if Ping’an was upset?" Mai Sui patted her mouth, "If I’d known, I wouldn’t have spoken up."
May 1st found himself at a loss for words. How was he supposed to respond? Tell her she shouldn’t have spoken up? Though she meant well, she hadn’t recognized her own position and really thought she was a big sister-in-law.
Saying it’s okay, his brother wouldn’t get mad over a joke.
But answering like that, he worried about his cousin being slapped outside one day. A straightforward nature was good, but too many words invited trouble—not everyone would dotingly tolerate you.
"You’re the best; those two boys are really hard to please."
May 1st shook his head with a chuckle. His cousin was indeed straightforward! Yet it’s because she genuinely treated the three of them wholeheartedly, making certain things tougher to handle.
He suspected his father had the same attitude towards people back home. Speak lightly, they won’t understand; speak harshly, you hurt feelings, then you feel guilty.
May 1st glanced at her, "Second sister, how have you been getting along with colleagues at work lately?"
"Just so-so."
"How many do you get along with well?"
"Not many, I’m crazy busy every day."
May 1st smirked, "I mean, do you speak your mind at work too?"
"Of course not! With those I like, I chat more, but with those I don’t like, why bother?"
"But I’ve heard your nickname is ’Red Pepper,’ you’ve even taken Grandma Zhao’s title. Second sister, let me remind you, in this place, families adhering to strict rules will become more common, you have to adjust your temper..."
Halfway through, May 1st ultimately swallowed the rest: once you’re too frank and get a lesson, whether you’re right or wrong, our family won’t be willing to intervene.
"Sigh... I’ll change."
Little Jiu subtly tugged on May 1st’s sleeve, quickening the pace. Haven’t you noticed she’s almost thirty? Still just a cousin, speaking harshly might make her bear a grudge.
Ping’an amusedly glanced at her, giving up the intention to brainwash Mai Sui. Didn’t see that the ugly girl knew etiquette; such a grown sister, it really wasn’t his place to advise.
