Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space
Chapter 1377: Affectionate Glances
Just during dinner, the outside became pitch black, the wind kept howling, and the snow was falling heavier and heavier, like torn cotton, slowly drifting.
After dinner, when the two brothers personally escorted their girlfriends home, the outside had turned into a world draped in silver.
On winter nights, pedestrians were scarce. Occasionally, someone would hurriedly return to their warm home, with their necks hunched against the winter wind.
One beam of dim light by the roadside illuminated the two pairs of couples at both ends.
The long-separated couples met with the chill northern wind, making it difficult to converse, but they held hands affectionately, adorning the cold and silent night with warmth.
Ping’an smiled at Qu Shengmei, pulled up her scarf, and hugged her, “Go inside quickly—it’s late now. Tomorrow I will visit your parents and then take you to the movies.”
“Okay, I’ll wait for you.” Qu Shengmei hugged his waist, looking up at him, “Good night.”
Ping’an glanced around, placed his chin on her head, let out a cheerful laugh, hugged her again, then gently pushed her away.
Over there, as they approached the Yi Family’s doorstep, Liu Yi pulled Yi Tangtang into a secluded corner, “My little girl has really grown up.”
Yi Tangtang snuggled into his arms, looking up with a foolish smile.
“Such a silly girl,” Liu Yi pecked at the corner of her lips, “Did you miss your brother?”
Yi Tangtang gazed up, closed her eyes, her eyelid eyelashes trembling like fans, “I did, I dream about you every night.”
After a long while, Liu Yi hugged her out to the doorstep and looked at her deeply, “Go back and have a good night’s sleep, tomorrow your brother will come and get you.”
Yi Tangtang giggled absentmindedly, covering her face with both hands, her eyes shaped like a crescent moon blinking, “Come when my foster mom goes to work, or I can go myself.”
Liu Yi looked at her meaningfully and laughed lightly.
This little girl really knows how to tease people more and more!
He turned her around with one hand and slapped her butt, “Be good, hurry and go inside.”
Yi Tangtang coquettishly shot him a glance, waved her little hand, left a string of laughter, and ran into the house.
When Liu Yi arrived home, Ping’an was already in the living room.
He was accompanying the family, watching TV and chatting when Liu Yi came in. Ping’an gave him a meaningful smile.
“Didn’t encounter your father-in-law? Uncle left more than half an hour ago.”
Liu Yi sat down calmly beside him, “I went to the entrance. Didn’t sister-in-law urge you to set a date?”
“What date?”
“The wedding.” Liu Yi smiled, “Brother, you’ve passed the suitable age for marriage.”
Miao Lishan nodded repeatedly, “Indeed, it’s time to hurry. May 1st won’t come back by the end of the year, but he will surely visit next year. Just right for attending your wedding, or else your brother will miss it, and how will he bother you then?”
Ping’an gave Liu Yi a veiled glance, rubbed the back of his neck, “Can’t we wait until May 1st graduates?”
“Better to do it sooner. After you’re finished, in two years Little Tangtang will graduate, then it’ll be Liu Yi’s turn. Otherwise, if you both do it together, I won’t keep up with the kids being born.”
“Brother, hurry up. Grandma is eager to hold chubby babies.”
“Isn’t that you who’s eager?”
“If you’re not anxious, why would I be?” Liu Yi flicked the nonexistent snow off his leg, “Sister-in-law is quite nice, marry her sooner so she can help Mom.”
Beside them, the distracted father-in-law duo listened with one ear while playing Go.
Hearing this, Zhou Xiaozheng raised his chin toward Ping’an, signaling him to speak quickly.
Zhang Guoqing chuckled, “Your brother isn’t wrong. Set the time early so your mom can plan slowly. New house, banquet, guest list—so many things.”
Zhou Jiao rolled her eyes at them and looked at the two eloquent sons: why always make her the excuse?
Ping’an frowned slightly, “Can’t we just keep it simple and get a certificate and have a couple of tables for drinks?”
“What’s that saying? It’s not like you’re hiding.” Miao Lishan waved to stop him talking, “You’re the eldest in the family; a few dozen tables are necessary, anything less is inappropriate.
First, think about how many friends and comrades you have. Then your grandpa, dad, and mom—how many friends do they have, plus family relatives?
They all want to come to the banquet; can you keep them out? I’m worried even a dozen tables won’t be enough, not just two? We need a big table just for us.”
“Grandpa?”
Zhou Xiaozheng chuckled and shook his head, “Even if you call the ancestors, it won’t work!”
Ping’an looked at everyone with difficulty.
Zhou Jiao jokingly watched him, surprised, “Son, you’re not thinking of backing out of the marriage, are you?”
Backing out?
Don’t see the young couple so deeply in love.
The family happily watched Ping’an, waiting for him to say something.
Ping’an pondered for a while, “So let’s wait, next year will be my crucial year. I already mentioned it to Sheng Mei, and she says she supports me.”
Upon hearing this, even Miao Lishan understood the implication. Since the kids had made concessions, the family unanimously nodded in agreement.
“Will there be danger?” This was Zhou Jiao’s main concern, “You’re still young, and experience takes time to build—don’t rush for achievements.”
“Mom, don’t worry, I know this truth. I’ll take over duties after the New Year; the military affairs require reform, with no dangerous tasks for me.” Ping’an smiled reassuringly.
Zhang Guoqing sneaked a glance at his worried wife, stretched, leaned back in the chair, analyzing step by step, “Next April and May the family will be busy, and in autumn Grandpa and I are the busiest.
The best time is around New Year’s, only then May 1st will have a vacation to come back. But by year’s end, your mom is busiest, so delaying a year is better.”
Zhou Jiao smiled, thoughtfully glancing at the two sons, following his lead, “Indeed that’s the case. Dad, why don’t we move first?”
Ping’an looked around the living room in surprise, “We’re living well here, why move?”
Liu Yi tilted his leg, nudged him, signaling not to interrupt.
“Discuss it with Xiao Wu.” After finishing, Zhou Xiaozheng looked at the two grandsons, “We’re not moving to the old house, the logistics said several times that our family will move up the mountain.”
“Then we do need to move.”
Liu Yi looked towards Zhou Jiao with concern, “Wouldn’t that make it more inconvenient for Mom to go to work?”
“After the New Year, your mom will have a car.”
Ping’an glanced sideways at his brother: Fool! Of course, Mother is getting a promotion, otherwise, would Grandpa and Dad agree if everything wasn’t settled?
The reason for staying put was all to consider Mom.
Liu Yi smiled indifferently, “Dad, what about you? Still don’t want a yard?”
Zhang Guoqing decisively nodded, thought about it, and advised, “When you come to distribute houses, you also refuse first. Our family has too many yards; don’t compete with others.”
“We don’t care; dormitories are fine. But once my brother gets the marriage certificate, they will definitely allocate; should it be refused then?”
“By then, directly let the female side apply for housing from the unit; normally, you guys are in the military, they can have a place to temporarily rest in the city.”
Brother Ping’an’s pair suspiciously looked at him: Are you fooling kids? Is there any shortage of rest stops for our family?
