Rebirth in the 50s: The Couple with the Hidden Space
Chapter 1389: In a Foreign Land 1
September of 1984.
In a foreign land, Zhou Jiao once again reunites with Miao Tianming, who comes to pick her up at the airport.
“Sis.”
Zhou Jiao blinks in surprise.
Miao Tianming laughs heartily. Distance doesn’t change his familiarity with her, no matter how her appearance might be disguised; she is still his Immortal Sister.
“Sis, this is your future sister-in-law, Angie.” Miao Tianming points to the girl beside him, “Angie, this is my sister Miao Xiaoqiao, my real sister.”
Angie steps forward for a hug, “Sister Xiaoqiao, nice to meet you.”
“Me too. He’s finally found a bride; please be patient with him in the future.” Zhou Jiao says with sincerity. If her little brother didn’t find someone soon, she’d suspect he was determined to be single.
Miao Tianming signals his bodyguards beside him to fetch the luggage, nodding to a few people behind Zhou Jiao and looking around in hesitation.
Soon, he spots a tall figure walking slowly.
He waves to Liu Yi, feeling a bit regretful that Liu Yi didn’t come to pick up at the scene; otherwise, the boy would have been making a racket.
“Let’s go, we’ll talk at the hotel.”
Sitting in the car, Zhou Jiao looks out at the bustling cityscape. Everywhere she sees indeed has an ephemeral and surreal sense of the future.
The late Showa era of the eighties, this country’s economy is indeed not to be underestimated, no wonder their confidence swelled to claim they could buy the whole United States.
No matter how she internally rejects it, facing the visual impact, most people would be stunned by this overwhelming prosperity.
“Sis, isn’t the development great? Once settled, I’ll take you to Ginza; it’s even more prosperous there.”
Zhou Jiao silently nods.
If it weren’t for some people wearing kimonos and the ghost-like images mixed with Chinese characters on roadside billboards, she’d hardly realize she’s in a foreign land.
“Sister Xiaoqiao, don’t listen to him; it’s only better in the cities, the countryside isn’t this good, the security here isn’t as good as back home.”
“Have you returned to the country?”
“Yes, in 1980 my grandfather took me back once, then again in 1982 with my older brother. Our country will definitely not be worse off than here in the future.”
Upon hearing Angie’s words, Zhou Jiao approvingly glanced at Miao Tianming. To have such an understanding as a overseas Chinese, not bad. Just for this bit of patriotism, her little brother didn’t misjudge!
“Have you been to the Capital? Next time you return, I’ll pick you up.”
“Sure! Not only Beijing, on both trips I visited many places. My hometown is Hai City. My grandfather went to Southern Ocean in the early forties, then married my grandmother and settled abroad. Now in Beijing, there’s still my little uncle, his family has a courtyard house, it’s so beautiful, near the front gate. I have several aunts, they’re all great people…”
Listening to the girl slowly narrate, Zhou Jiao didn’t ask for detailed addresses or names.
——One has to marvel at how small Beijing is, even having the surname Mi, which gives her a hunch she might unknowingly lose her cover.
In the hotel, the mother and sons happily reunited, barely squeezing together to pour out their hearts, arranging for others to return to their rooms for some rest, it’s already mealtime.
After having what was supposed to be a welcoming banquet, when they leave the sky is dark, under the neon lights, this country presents another scene of prosperity.
Due to Liu Yi needing to go back to join his companions, the mother and sons abandoned the thought of shopping, entrusted Miao Tianming and Angie to entertain the group of Hu Xiaohui.
Compared to the personal affairs of the younger son, Zhou Jiao was more interested in his views, “Little Treasure, you’ve been here for a while, what do you feel?”
“One must admit, we’re behind by quite a bit.”
Looking at the bright lights outside, Zhou Jiao sighed, “Indeed, we halted for ten years. Economically, culturally, we’ve lost quite a lot.”
Even if the subsequent economic crisis set this country back twenty years, how many years will it take to catch up in the future?
“Mom, this doesn’t sound like you, why boost others’ morale and diminish your own? Seriously, it wasn’t just ten years pause for our country, but a hundred.”
“How many years of history does the United States have since its founding? And us, a country scraped empty, yet now it’s beginning to thrive.”
“As long as there is capital and talent, what does this current prosperity count for? In the future, our homeland will surely become a world power.”
“Today the whole world sees the awakening dragon; one day, Chinese will stand proud in every corner of the world, shouting they are Chinese.”
Whenever Liu Yi thinks of past encounters with foreigners who always ask if he’s Japanese, he’s filled with ever-burning anger.
God damn it, making it seem like this country is the only noteworthy in all of Asia.
These little short legs, he resents being born decades too late! And those yellow-haired freaks Geng always talks about.
One day, we’ll settle scores about the Eight-Nation Alliance.
“Brother, the laboratory here is quite impressive.” Liu Yi grins slyly, “I’ve caught a wind of something; DRAM technology is in its final stage.”
Zhou Jiao’s eyes light up hearing this.
Indeed? In the previous life, DRAM technology was first invented by the little devils, then sold to the United States, leading Intel to flourish with this technology.
Similarly, because the little devils mastered this technology, they held absolute advantages in the electronics industry thereafter.
Liu Yi knowingly blinks, then changes the topic, “When do you plan to leave with your group?”
“They won’t leave before school starts.”
Liu Yi ponders for a moment, slightly nodding, “Then you just go have fun, I’ll contact you if anything arises.”
“Second brother, you’re not taking the others along.”
Liu Yi kicks him, “What nonsense? Be serious.”
Liu Yi springs away, immediately darting to Zhou Jiao’s side, “Mom, brother hit me.”
Zhou Jiao playfully pats him, “Alright, stop teasing your brother. You won’t be able to contact me for a while. Tell Mom properly about the situation here.”
Liu Yi wraps his arm around her neck, chuckling, “Alright, mother.”
Even if his mom hadn’t brought it up, Liu Yi intended to discuss the situation with them seriously.
For instance, security, despite the prosperity of this area, behind the scenes black gangs control everything, especially once you’re out of downtown, things are even more chaotic.
Best to avoid going out at night if possible.
And when shopping.
It’s better to visit Ginza, don’t go to those Black Market places. Some people specialize in swindling, forming organized gangs.
Especially those second-hand markets, really frustrating.
Who knows where those second-hand clothes, second-hand appliances are collected from; if one isn’t careful, they could get trapped. Especially those accompanying his mother, who came along.
And certain places unfitting for children.
His Aunt Hu Xiaohui is especially fond of the bustle, better not stir his mother’s curiosity to take a look.
Zhou Jiao absentmindedly watches her chattering little son, ultimately swallowing her question about his personal feelings. What could be more important than her son’s safety?
