Rebirth: Pampered by the Lord
Chapter 2715: Almost Beggars
The servant boy, filled with grievances, complained, "Old Master, what time is it already? We’re almost beggars now, with no food money for tomorrow. Isn’t it good that the Princess Consort is willing to give us silver? It solves our urgent needs. Old Master, stop pretending to be noble."
Old man: "Doing this makes it seem like we’ve come just to beg for money, making me very embarrassed."
Servant boy: "It’ll be even more embarrassing when we’re sleeping on the streets!"
Old man: "What’s the matter? I say a few words, and you talk back?"
Servant boy: "I dare not."
Old man: "Dare not? I see you dare a lot."
As the two talked, they gradually walked away.
Zi Xia shook her head and instructed the gate guards to watch the entrance carefully and not let suspicious people or gifts inside, then turned and went back to the residence.
This scene at the gate was witnessed by a maid who was about to return to the residence, hiding in the shadows. She didn’t return home but quietly followed the old man, tracking them all the way to the inn and only turning back after they booked a room.
Inn, second-floor private room.
"Old Master, now you see the benefits of having silver, right?"
The servant boy laid down on the comfortable big bed after putting down his bundle, speaking smugly.
The old man sat on a chair, poured a cup of tea, took a sip to soothe his throat, then snorted coldly and said, "It’s nothing to be proud of eating handouts."
The servant boy rolled lazily on the bed, saying, "Old Master, can you not use fancy words? I have been poor since childhood and didn’t go to school, so I don’t understand."
The old man patiently explained, "It means that money given as charity is insulting and not worth boasting about."
The servant boy rolled his eyes; the Old Master was being stubbornly dignified at his own expense. As long as they had silver to eat and stay at the inn, what did insults matter?
Without money for the inn or food later, fainting on the streets and having the Heavenly Mountain Sect laugh at them would be the real insult!
The servant boy sarcastically said, "Then Old Master, don’t eat today, I’ll eat on your behalf."
"Insolent! Are you the master or am I the master?"
The old man wasn’t stupid; he heard the servant boy’s disrespect. How can a servant suggest the master shouldn’t eat while he eats it all? Outrageous, is he treating him like a fool?
The servant boy finally realized he said something he shouldn’t have to the old man, shivered in fear, quickly jumped off the bed, and said, "Old Master, I didn’t mean it that way, don’t misunderstand."
"Hmph, watch your words next time!"
"Understood."
Soon, the waiter brought the meal upstairs, and the two of them devoured a hot meal. As the sky darkened, the waiter brought up two basins of hot water. They washed their feet and then went to bed.
When waking up the next day, the servant boy noticed a letter tucked beside the door.
"Old Master, Old Master, look, what’s this?" The servant boy called to the old man still lying in bed, holding the envelope.
"What is it?"
"A letter, I don’t know who put it here."
"Bring it here and let me see!"
"Okay!"
The servant boy handed the envelope to the old man, who opened it and took a look, his complexion changed dramatically, seemingly afraid of misreading, read it again, his expression extremely tense.
The servant boy walked over to glance at the letter paper, but having never attended private school, he couldn’t read or understand what was written. He could only ask, "Old Master, what’s wrong?"
Staring at the letter paper, the old man looked shocked. He didn’t hear the servant boy’s question at all: "...!"
The old man’s reaction was abnormal; something must be wrong. The servant boy shouted again, "Old Master, what is actually wrong with you?"
