Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 53 : The Truth Beneath the Unknown
Chapter 53: Chapter 53 : The Truth Beneath the Unknown
They returned to the Blackfang settlement before sunset.
Ash did not tell the entire pack about the High-Priority Task.
He knew how the elders would react if they learned that the System had ordered him to hunt an unidentified creature powerful enough to frighten a Moonfang. Panic would spread through the settlement before they even understood what was happening.
Instead, Ash gathered the hunters and asked them about the creature’s tracks.
Rowan was among the first to arrive.
He studied the enormous impressions left in the snow and remained silent for a long time.
"I’ve never seen tracks this large."
Ash crouched beside one of them.
"Have you noticed anything unusual about animal movement?"
Rowan looked at him.
"Unusual?"
"Animals leaving their territories. Herds moving earlier than normal. Predators abandoning hunting grounds."
Rowan’s expression slowly changed.
"Actually, yes."
Ash looked up.
"The western deer herds moved three days earlier than expected. The snow boars also disappeared from their usual territory. Even some of the mountain goats have moved lower."
Aren’s ears lifted.
"Migration."
Kael nodded slowly.
"Not ordinary migration."
The group returned to the ancient observatory that evening.
Kael spent hours comparing the ancient maps with the markings left by the creature. Ash remained beside him, studying every symbol.
Eventually, Kael found something.
His paw stopped over a long curved line crossing several continents.
Ash leaned closer.
"What is that?"
Kael’s face became pale.
"A migration route."
Ash looked at the line.
It began somewhere in the far northern region of Frostfang.
Then it traveled south through another continent.
It crossed toward Emberfall.
From there, it continued toward the Abyssal waters.
Finally, it disappeared near the Forgotten Continent.
Ash slowly understood.
"The creature isn’t wandering."
"No."
Kael traced the route.
"It is following something."
Ash looked at him.
"Something?"
Kael nodded.
"An ancient route."
He pointed toward a faded inscription beside the map.
The characters were nearly destroyed by time, but the relic responded when Ash approached.
Blue light spread across the stone.
The inscription began glowing.
Kael read it slowly.
"When the Ancient Ones begin to walk, the sleeping world will remember its first age."
Nobody spoke.
Ash stared at the sentence.
The meaning was clear enough.
These migrations had happened before.
Long ago.
Perhaps thousands of years ago.
Perhaps before the Blackfang Pack even existed.
Ash’s relic suddenly pulsed.
The entire map changed.
Several hidden lines appeared beneath the continents.
Kael stepped backward.
"What..."
The lines formed a massive symbol beneath the world.
Ash recognized it immediately.
It resembled the symbol associated with the Guardian.
Aren stared.
"The Guardian."
Kael shook his head.
"Not exactly."
He moved closer.
"This is older."
Ash looked at the symbol.
"What does it mean?"
Kael’s voice became quiet.
"The Guardian may not have been protecting only Frostfang."
Ash’s expression changed.
Kael pointed toward the network of lines.
"Look."
The symbol connected the continents.
Frostfang.
Verdant.
Emberfall.
Abyssal.
The Forgotten Continent.
All of them were connected by ancient markings.
"The Guardian may have been part of something much larger," Kael said. "Something that once governed the boundaries between the ancient territories."
Ash’s eyes narrowed.
"Then why are the Primordials moving now?"
Kael had no answer.
Ash waited.
The System answered instead.
[Cause of Migration: Unknown.]
Aren looked at Ash.
"Still unknown?"
Ash nodded.
Another message appeared.
[Probability of External Influence: Detected.]
Ash’s expression hardened.
"Something is causing it."
Kael slowly looked toward the Dreadborn symbol carved into the ancient wall.
Ash followed his gaze.
The memory returned immediately.
The Dreadborn commander standing on the ridge.
The crimson eyes.
The words.
When the time comes, he must choose us willingly.
Ash had assumed the Dreadborn were the greatest enemy in the ancient world.
But now doubt began to spread through his mind.
"Kael."
The old Silver Lynx looked at him.
"Tell me about the Dreadborn."
Kael remained silent.
"Not what you told us before."
Ash stepped closer.
"I want the older history."
Kael’s expression became heavy.
"The Dreadborn were never the oldest race."
Ash’s ears rose.
"They survived the First Awakening, just as some other species did."
"Then who came before them?"
Kael looked toward the ancient symbol.
"We don’t know."
Ash’s eyes narrowed.
"That’s not an answer."
"It is the only honest one."
Kael lowered his head.
"Ancient Silver Lynx records describe something older than the Dreadborn. Older than the Guardian. Something that existed before the current species spread across these continents."
Ash’s heart began beating faster.
"What was it called?"
Kael hesitated.
"The records never gave it a true name."
"Why?"
"Because every civilization that tried to describe it used a different name."
Kael looked toward the dark mountains.
"Some called it the First Beast. Some called it the Deep King. Others called it the World Below."
Ash remained silent.
"Whatever it was," Kael continued, "even the Dreadborn feared it."
Ash’s expression changed.
"You’re saying the Dreadborn aren’t awakening the ancient beasts?"
Kael slowly shook his head.
"They may be running from something that is waking up."
The chamber became silent.
Ash remembered the enormous eyes beneath the mountain.
He remembered the ancient voice.
He remembered the warning.
The Dreadborn will not be the ones who awaken.
Suddenly, the words had a different meaning.
The Dreadborn weren’t necessarily the beginning of the disaster.
They might only be another consequence of something much older.
Before Ash could say anything else, the System activated.
[Target Movement Detected.]
Ash’s head snapped upward.
Another message appeared.
[Unknown Species has altered migration route.]
His heart accelerated.
"Where?"
The system displayed a directional marker.
Northwest.
Then slowly, the marker shifted.
Toward Moonveil.
Ash’s expression changed completely.
"The creature changed direction."
Kael looked toward him.
"Where is it going?"
Ash stared at the marker.
"Moonveil."
Kael’s face went pale.
Aren immediately understood.
"The Guardian."
Ash shook his head.
"Maybe."
The relic began glowing again.
A final message appeared.
[Target has detected an Ancient Bloodline.]
Ash stopped breathing.
His paw slowly touched the black stone.
"It detected me."
Kael stared at him.
"Then perhaps it wasn’t simply passing through."
The realization settled heavily over them.
The creature might have been migrating.
But now it had changed direction.
And the reason for that change could be Ash himself.
Outside, snow began falling heavily.
The Blackfang settlement gradually became quieter as night settled over the valley. Wolves moved between the dens, hunters checked the watch posts, and the younger cubs were guided inside by their families.
Ash stood at the edge of the settlement.
Behind him stood the Blackfangs.
Aren remained nearby.
Kael watched from a short distance.
And beside Ash stood the Moonfang.
Its silver-black fur shimmered beneath the pale moonlight.
Ash looked toward the mountains.
Somewhere beyond them, the enormous unknown creature was moving.
He could not see it.
He could not understand it.
He could not even ask the System what it was.
Yet he felt strangely calm.
The world had become larger.
Much larger.
And instead of making him want to hide, that realization made him want to explore every corner of it.
Ash smiled.
"I’ll find you."
Aren looked at him.
"And then?"
Ash’s eyes gleamed with determination.
"Then I’ll find out why the System wants me to devour you."
The Moonfang’s ears twitched.
For a moment, Ash wondered whether the creature understood him.
Then the System appeared.
[HIGH-PRIORITY TASK ACTIVE.]
Ash’s smile widened.
[Objective: Devour the Unknown Species.]
His eyes moved to the next line.
[Reward: ?????]
The question marks seemed almost deliberately mysterious.
Then another notification appeared.
[Additional Condition Detected.]
Ash’s expression became serious.
The final message appeared.
[Do not allow the target to reach Moonveil.]
Ash’s smile disappeared.
He stared at the words.
Now he understood.
The System wasn’t simply asking him to hunt the creature because it was powerful.
Something about that creature mattered.
Something connected it to Moonveil.
Something connected it to the ancient seal.
And perhaps something connected it to the thing sleeping beneath the mountain.
Ash slowly turned toward the northern wilderness.
The wind moved through the trees.
Snow drifted across the frozen ground.
Then it happened.
From beneath the distant mountain came a sound.
Three slow knocks.
The same rhythm.
The same ancient warning.
Ash’s eyes narrowed.
The Moonfang lifted its head.
Aren froze.
Kael closed his eyes for a moment.
And beneath the frozen earth, something answered.
The world had begun to move.
The ancient beasts were migrating.
The forgotten continents were awakening.
The Dreadborn were hiding something.
The Guardian was trying to contain something.
And now an unidentified creature was heading toward Moonveil.
Ash stood silently beneath the falling snow, feeling the weight of the unknown settle around him.
For the first time, he was not simply trying to survive the world.
He wanted to understand it.
He wanted to reach its oldest secrets.
And if something stood between him and the truth, Ash was prepared to become strong enough to tear that obstacle apart.
Far beyond the mountains, the unknown creature stopped.
Its enormous head slowly turned.
For a brief moment, its ancient eyes seemed to look directly toward Moonveil.
Then it continued walking.
And somewhere beneath the mountain, something opened its eyes.
