Reborn as a Snow Wolf: My Bloodline Ancestor System
Chapter 55 : The Ancient Predator
Chapter 55: Chapter 55 : The Ancient Predator
LlThe landscape changed as they traveled deeper into the mountains.
The trees became thinner, their branches twisted beneath layers of frost, while the snow grew deeper with every passing hour. The wind that had followed them through the forest became sharper and more unpredictable, carrying strange scents from the distant peaks.
Even the sky seemed darker here, as though the mountains themselves were blocking the remaining light of the afternoon.
Ash continued forward without speaking.
The trail had become increasingly difficult to follow, but the signs were still there for a hunter who knew how to look. A broken branch here, a shallow depression beneath the snow there, a few scattered stones that had been pushed aside by something unimaginably heavy.
Then Ash noticed something unusual.
There were no animal tracks anymore.
The mountains should have been full of life, especially near the frozen valleys where prey usually gathered during the colder months. Yet the snow around them was untouched except for their own footprints.
Aren stopped.
"This place is empty."
Ash looked around.
"Not empty."
He lowered his head and examined the snow.
"Abandoned."
Kael’s ears moved.
"What difference does that make?"
"The animals didn’t leave naturally."
Ash pointed toward a set of tiny tracks near a frozen bush.
"They were moving toward the valley yesterday. Then they suddenly turned around."
Aren studied the direction.
"Something frightened them."
Ash nodded.
The Moonfang had already moved several meters away.
Its body was low, and its tail remained unusually still.
It was listening.
Ash followed its gaze toward the distant mountains.
Nothing moved.
But something felt wrong.
They continued.
The silence became heavier.
Eventually, they reached a narrow ridge overlooking a frozen basin.
Ash stopped.
Far below, a sheet of ice stretched across the valley like a giant mirror. Beneath it, faint blue shadows moved through the dark water.
Aren noticed them too.
"Fish."
Kael looked down.
"Those aren’t ordinary fish."
Ash watched the movement.
Several enormous shapes were swimming beneath the ice.
Then something changed.
The entire school suddenly turned.
Thousands of smaller fish scattered in different directions at once.
Ash’s ears rose.
"What happened?"
The answer came from beneath the ice.
A deep vibration passed through the frozen water.
The surface trembled.
The underwater creatures reacted immediately.
Large pale fish that had been hiding beneath the rocks suddenly burst from their shelters. Long, eel-like predators abandoned their hunting grounds. Even the massive armored creatures that usually remained near the bottom began moving toward deeper waters.
Something was driving them away.
Ash stared through the ice.
For a few seconds, he saw nothing.
Then a massive shadow passed beneath the frozen surface.
It was so large that Ash couldn’t see where its body began or ended.
The underwater animals scattered around it.
The shadow disappeared into the darkness.
Ash slowly backed away from the edge.
"That wasn’t the creature we’re following."
Kael looked at him.
"How do you know?"
"The movement was too far from the trail."
Another vibration passed through the ice.
The fish fled even faster.
Aren’s fur rose.
"Something is moving beneath the mountains."
Kael didn’t answer.
His eyes remained fixed on the frozen water.
Ash noticed something else.
The ancient blue lines beneath the ice were glowing.
The same lines they had seen in the forest.
They were spreading beneath the basin like veins.
Ash’s relic warmed against his chest.
He touched it carefully.
A faint pulse answered.
Once.
Then again.
The underwater creatures continued fleeing.
Ash finally understood that the ancient network wasn’t limited to the land.
It extended beneath Frostfang itself.
Through mountains.
Through valleys.
Through frozen rivers.
And perhaps even beneath the ocean.
Whatever was disturbing the ancient system wasn’t affecting only the creatures above them.
The entire ecosystem seemed to be responding.
Ash looked toward the mountains.
"We need to keep moving."
Kael nodded.
They left the frozen basin behind.
By late afternoon, they reached a vast frozen valley surrounded by jagged cliffs.
The mountains rose on every side, their peaks disappearing into heavy clouds. Snow swept across the open ground in long white streams, making it difficult to see more than a short distance ahead.
Ash stopped at the ridge.
Something had changed.
He could smell it.
Metallic.
Cold.
Strange.
Blood.
Aren smelled it too.
"Something is here."
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
The Moonfang immediately lowered its body.
Ash didn’t move.
He simply stared into the valley.
At first, he saw nothing.
Only snow.
Only cliffs.
Only the endless movement of the storm.
Then the wind changed.
A faint scent reached him again.
Blood.
Fresh enough to still carry warmth beneath the cold air.
Ash’s eyes narrowed.
"It’s nearby."
Aren looked toward the valley.
"Where?"
Ash didn’t answer.
He listened.
Nothing.
Then came a sound.
A distant crack.
Something had stepped on frozen stone.
Ash’s entire body became still.
Another sound followed.
Slow.
Heavy.
Far away.
The Moonfang lowered itself even further.
Kael whispered, "Don’t move."
Ash looked at him.
The old Silver Lynx wasn’t looking at Ash.
He was staring into the snowfall.
The wind suddenly weakened.
For several seconds, the valley became unnaturally quiet.
Then the snowfall shifted.
A massive silhouette appeared through the white haze.
Ash’s heart began beating faster.
The unknown creature stood on the opposite side of the valley.
Only part of its body was visible.
Its pale scales blended with the snow-covered mountains, making it almost impossible to distinguish where the creature ended and the landscape began.
Ash remained completely still.
He didn’t want to be noticed.
The System remained silent.
The creature slowly moved.
One enormous limb pressed into the snow.
The ground sank beneath its weight.
Then another.
Ash’s eyes followed the movement.
Something was wrong.
The creature wasn’t walking normally.
Its movements were controlled.
Careful.
Almost strained.
Then Ash saw the wound.
A massive dark scar stretched across its side.
Frozen blood covered several layers of pale armor-like scales.
The injury was enormous.
Ash’s expression changed.
"Something hurt it."
Aren stared.
"That?"
Ash nodded.
Kael looked disturbed.
The creature was gigantic.
Its body was protected by thick natural armor.
Its movements suggested tremendous strength.
Yet something had managed to injure it badly enough to leave a wound visible from this distance.
The System activated.
[Target Condition Detected.]
Ash’s heart skipped.
[Unknown Species has sustained Ancient-Class Injury.]
Then:
[Cause: Unknown.]
Ash stared.
The creature wasn’t simply traveling.
It was wounded.
And whatever had wounded it could still be somewhere nearby.
Aren looked toward the mountains.
"If something did that..."
Ash finished the thought.
"It may still be following it."
The Moonfang suddenly growled.
Its attention shifted away from the creature.
Toward the opposite ridge.
Ash slowly turned.
At first, he saw only snow.
Then he noticed them.
Three enormous footprints.
They were deeper than the footprints of the unknown creature.
Much wider.
The snow inside them had frozen solid.
Ash’s eyes widened.
He looked from those tracks toward the giant creature.
The footprints continued behind it.
Three.
Only three.
Aren’s fur rose along his spine.
"What made those?"
Kael stared.
The old Silver Lynx’s breathing became shallow.
"I don’t know."
Ash looked at him.
"You’ve seen ancient records for most of your life."
"I have."
"Then what is that?"
Kael shook his head.
"I don’t know."
The words carried genuine fear.
Ash understood immediately.
The unknown creature might not be the hunter.
It might be the hunted.
A cold sensation moved through Ash’s body.
For the first time since receiving the High-Priority Task, his excitement became mixed with caution.
He looked at the giant creature again.
It wasn’t moving toward Moonveil anymore.
It was looking behind itself.
Its enormous head remained turned toward the distant ridge.
As if it knew something was there.
As if it could hear something they couldn’t.
Ash whispered, "What are you running from?"
The creature suddenly stopped.
Its enormous head rose.
Its ears shifted.
The valley became completely silent.
Even the wind seemed to fade.
Ash felt the relic burn against his chest.
The creature turned.
Its eyes found him.
The pressure that followed was immediate.
Ash’s body instinctively lowered.
Aren froze.
Kael couldn’t move.
The Moonfang disappeared behind a rock.
The enormous creature stared directly at Ash.
For several heartbeats, neither side moved.
Ash could feel the creature’s gaze examining him.
Not attacking.
Not threatening.
Studying.
The relic erupted with blue light.
The System appeared.
[Ancient Bloodline Resonance: 19%...]
Ash’s eyes widened.
The percentage increased.
[31%...]
His heartbeat accelerated.
Then:
[47%...]
The black relic burned against his chest.
Ash clenched his jaw.
"What are you?"
The creature slowly lowered its head.
Its enormous eyes remained fixed on him.
For one impossible moment, Ash felt as though the creature recognized something within him.
Not his appearance.
Not his scent.
Something older.
Something connected to his blood.
The System suddenly flashed.
[WARNING.]
Then:
[Target has established visual contact with Host.]
Ash’s breathing became slower.
He expected an attack.
The creature could easily destroy the entire valley.
Instead, it turned its head.
Toward Moonveil.
Ash followed its gaze.
The creature opened its enormous mouth.
A roar erupted across the mountains.
The sound was so powerful that snow exploded from the surrounding cliffs.
A distant avalanche thundered down the mountain.
Ash dropped his body instinctively.
Aren pressed himself against the ground.
Kael covered his ears.
The Moonfang vanished deeper into its hiding place.
But Ash realized something strange.
The creature wasn’t roaring at them.
It wasn’t attacking.
It was warning them.
Or warning something else.
The sound traveled toward the northern mountains.
Toward Moonveil.
Ash’s relic suddenly became unbearably hot.
The ground beneath them trembled.
Far below the mountains, something answered.
Three knocks came from somewhere beneath the earth.
Ash froze.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The same rhythm.
The same ancient sound they had heard beneath the Silver Lynx valley.
But then came another.
Knock.
A fourth.
Kael’s face completely changed.
Ash looked at him.
"Why is that different?"
Kael’s eyes remained fixed on the mountains.
His voice was barely audible.
"Because there were never supposed to be four."
Ash’s blood ran cold.
The System activated.
[Ancient Seal Integrity: 61%.]
Another message followed.
[Guardian Connection: 15%.]
Ash stared at the numbers.
They had changed.
The seal was weakening.
The Guardian connection was increasing.
Then the System displayed something Ash had never seen before.
[NEW ENTITY DETECTED.]
Ash’s eyes widened.
[Classification: ???]
The next line appeared.
[Location: Beneath Moonveil.]
Ash’s breathing stopped.
Then came the final warning.
[WARNING: The entity has begun to wake.]
The enormous creature across the valley suddenly looked toward the mountains again.
Its body tensed.
For the first time, Ash understood something terrifying.
The creature hadn’t come to Frostfang to conquer territory.
It hadn’t come to hunt the Blackfangs.
It hadn’t come because of the Dreadborn.
Something had driven it here.
Something had caused the ancient migration.
Something had frightened a creature that even the Moonfang feared.
And whatever that something was...
it was beneath Moonveil.
Ash looked at the enormous creature.
The creature looked back.
For a moment, they simply watched one another across the frozen valley.
Two predators from completely different worlds.
Neither understanding the other.
Neither knowing what the future would bring.
But Ash could feel it.
The hunt had already begun.
And perhaps he was not the only hunter.
The unknown creature turned away and disappeared into the snowfall.
The Moonfang slowly emerged from behind the rock.
Aren looked toward Ash.
"What are you thinking?"
Ash stared toward the place where the creature had vanished.
His eyes were no longer filled with simple excitement.
There was determination there now.
"I think we’re following the wrong question."
Aren frowned.
Ash touched the black relic.
"The question isn’t only what that creature is."
He looked toward Moonveil.
"It’s what made it come here."
Kael remained silent.
The ancient mountains stood beneath the darkening sky.
Snow continued to fall.
Far beneath the frozen earth, something enormous shifted.
The sound was almost too deep to hear.
But Ash felt it through his paws.
The world around him seemed to hold its breath.
His High-Priority Task remained active.
[Devour the Unknown Species.]
[Reward: ?????]
But now Ash understood that completing the task might require far more than simply defeating a powerful beast.
He would need to understand the migration.
He would need to understand the ancient network.
He would need to discover why the Unknown Species had changed its route.
And eventually, he would have to learn what waited beneath Moonveil.
Ash looked toward the dark horizon.
For the first time, the hunt no longer felt like a simple challenge.
It felt like the beginning of something much larger.
Something ancient.
Something that had been sleeping for thousands of years.
And now...
it had heard his name.
