Reborn as an Adventurer: I Gain a Skill From Every Monster I Eat
Chapter 160 — Two Threads
Chapter 160: Chapter 160 — Two Threads
He woke to a body that ached in careful, specific places rather than everywhere at once, which he took, cautiously, as a genuine sign of progress.
The ribs first. He tested them with slow, deliberate pressure and found the worst of the pain had dulled to something manageable — not gone, but no longer the sharp, breath-stealing wrongness of the day before. He unwrapped the binding carefully and found the wound itself closed properly, the skin pink and tender but whole, no longer weeping.
Faster than it should be, even for Mireflow alone.
He sat with that a moment, turning it over the way he turned over every genuine puzzle now, and found himself thinking back to the previous night’s half-formed observation, the one exhaustion had cut short before he could properly chase it.
Enduring Vitality kept me climbing when my arms should have given out. Mireflow kept the damage from stacking up faster than I could manage it. Neither one did the whole job alone. Together, they did.
He tested his ankle next, and found it considerably improved — swelling reduced, the sharp, grinding wrongness at its center settled into something closer to a deep, stubborn ache. He put weight on it carefully, wincing, and found it held. Not comfortable. Functional.
Another day, maybe less, and I’ll be walking properly again.
He ate a careful, modest breakfast from what little remained in his pack, and spent the morning simply resting, deliberately unhurried, watching the fungal light shift by whatever slow measure passed for time down here.
It was during that quiet, patient stretch that the thought from the night before finally settled into something he could properly act on.
He’d read, once, in the guild library back in Greyhaven, a passing reference to Skill Fusion — real, established, requiring abilities that shared some fundamental kinship before any attempt could succeed. He’d filed it away then as distant theory, something to consider once his collection had grown large enough to make the attempt worth trying.
Eleven abilities, back then. Fifteen now. And these two keep behaving like they’re already halfway to being the same thing.
He settled back against the hollow’s rough wall, closed his eyes, and reached inward — not toward either ability specifically, but toward the space between them, the way he imagined a craftsman might study two pieces of the same broken object before deciding how they’d once fit together.
Enduring Vitality answered first, warm and steady, the same patient endurance that had carried him through the climb the night before. Mireflow Regeneration answered beside it, quieter, still working even now on the last stubborn edges of his ankle’s swelling.
He held both in his attention at once, and found, to his genuine fascination, that they didn’t sit apart from each other the way his other abilities did. They overlapped. Blurred, faintly, at the edges, like two candle flames drawn close enough that their light no longer belonged clearly to either one.
There. That’s what I felt on the climb. Not two separate things helping. One thing, not yet finished becoming itself.
He didn’t know, precisely, how to push that process forward. Nothing in the sparse guild texts had described the actual mechanics of it, only that it happened, rarely, to those who understood their own power deeply enough to recognize the kinship in the first place.
He tried anyway, the way he tried everything — patient, deliberate, willing to fail a dozen times before succeeding once.
He held both abilities in his mind, deliberately drawing them toward each other rather than simply letting them sit side by side, the way he might have coaxed two reluctant strangers into conversation. Nothing happened, not at first. He tried again, adjusting his focus, imagining not two separate wells of warmth but one, deeper, fed from both directions at once.
Still nothing.
He kept at it through the better part of the afternoon, testing his ankle periodically, resting when the effort left him lightheaded, returning to the attempt each time with the same stubborn patience that had carried him through eight years of careful, unglamorous saving in a Greyhaven slum.
The breakthrough, when it came, arrived quietly, without fanfare — much like every genuine breakthrough in his life so far.
He stopped trying to force the two abilities together and instead, exhausted and half-frustrated, simply let his attention rest on the plain, honest truth of what they actually shared: both of them existed to keep him alive. Not to defeat anything, not to overpower anything. Simply to endure.
That’s the whole of it, isn’t it. Not fire and thread and speed. Just... enduring. Both of them, always, in their own quiet way.
The moment he stopped forcing it and simply understood it, something shifted.
Warmth spread through his chest, familiar in its patient certainty but different this time — deeper, more foundational, gathering not as something new arriving from outside but as something already present finally settling into its proper shape. He felt, distantly and without pain, two threads he’d carried separately for months draw together and become, quietly and without ceremony, one.
A name surfaced, whole and certain, the way every name before it had.
Vitalflow Endurance.
He sat with it a long moment, breath catching, and reached inward carefully to check what remained of the two abilities that had built it.
Enduring Vitality was gone. Mireflow Regeneration was gone alongside it. In their place sat something that felt, testing its edges the same careful way he’d tested every new arrival, considerably more than either had offered alone — stamina and recovery no longer working as two separate, cooperating systems, but as a single, unified current, steadier and deeper than anything he’d carried before.
Fourteen, now. Not fifteen.
He turned the number over with a strange, mixed satisfaction — genuine loss, in a way, two familiar names he’d carried for so long now folded into something else entirely. And genuine gain too, a fused ability that felt, even in this first quiet moment of testing, considerably more capable than the sum of its two parts had ever managed separately.
He tested it cautiously, pushing his battered body through a series of careful stretches, and found his ankle’s remaining ache easing at a pace that made his earlier estimate of "another day" feel suddenly, genuinely optimistic. His overall exhaustion, too, receded faster than it should have, energy returning in a steady, patient wave rather than the slower trickle he’d grown used to.
Considerably more than either alone, he thought again, genuinely astonished by the difference. That’s what fusion actually means, then. Not addition. Something new, built from what’s already there.
He pulled his journal from his pack, the worn, familiar weight of it steady in his hands despite everything the past two days had cost him, and wrote only a few careful lines, his hand still faintly unsteady from the effort of the fusion itself.
Fourteen abilities now, not fifteen. Enduring Vitality and Mireflow Regeneration, folded together into something called Vitalflow Endurance — stronger than either alone, and gone from me separately forever now that it’s done. I don’t fully understand the mechanism even having lived through it. I only know it worked, and that understanding the two abilities properly, rather than simply wanting them combined, was the whole of what actually mattered.
Ankle’s healing faster than it should. I intend to rest one more night before pushing further. This floor still owes me a proper look at whatever’s left of it.
He closed the journal, tucked it carefully back into his pack, and sat a while longer by the low fire, turning the discovery over again and again with the same patient satisfaction he gave every genuine milestone in this strange, remarkable life.
Fourteen abilities now, one of them entirely new in kind rather than simply added to the pile. An ankle healing faster than it had any right to. And somewhere above him, waiting patiently, an entire unexplored floor still holding whatever secrets it hadn’t yet decided to share.
He closed his eyes and let himself rest properly, for the first time since the fall, genuinely confident that tomorrow would find him ready to finish what this floor had started.
