Mika sat alone in his quarters at the Elite Academy, the evening settling dim and quiet around him, turning over the same restless, unresolved question that had haunted him for weeks now.

’I want to go back,’ he thought, staring at the ornate ceiling above his bed. ’to the border academy. to before any of this happened.’

But even as the thought formed, he knew, with a clarity that had been building steadily since the night of the capital’s assault, exactly how impossible that actually was. He couldn’t simply return, not after everything — not after his public dismissal from the Guide corps, not after weeks spent quietly poisoning the noble council against Julian, not after refusing to help defend the capital while people he’d trained alongside for years bled and died in the streets.

’even if I could go back,’ he thought slowly, ’I wouldn’t feel safe there anymore. not with everyone knowing what I did. what I didn’t do.’

He thought of Dan’s face that night, exhausted and disappointed in a way Mika had never seen from him before, walking out the door without a backward glance. He thought of the whispered conversations he’d caught fragments of since, even here at the Elite Academy, word of his cowardice apparently traveling faster and further than his earlier, carefully cultivated political campaign ever had.

’everyone knows,’ he thought bitterly. ’everyone knows I slept through it while people died. that’s not something that just fades quietly, no matter how many noble houses I’ve cultivated favor with since.’

He rose from his bed, restless, pacing the length of his ornate quarters with agitated, unsettled energy. The Elite Academy had offered him prestige, resources, a fresh start away from everything he’d lost at the border academy. But it hadn’t offered him the one thing he actually wanted, hadn’t given him back the version of himself who might have deserved any of it in the first place.

’and Logan,’ Mika thought, the name settling heavy and complicated in his chest. ’Logan lost Julian for good today. properly, publicly, in front of the entire academy.’

He’d expected, weeks ago, that this exact outcome would fill him with satisfaction, vindication finally arriving after everything he’d spent so long hoping for. Instead, the news had simply settled uncomfortable and hollow in his chest, the same way Julian’s survival had weeks earlier.

’I want to tell him,’ Mika thought slowly, the impulse rising sharp and unexpected. ’that there’s no going back. not for him, not for me. what’s done is already done, and neither of us gets to simply undo it because we finally understand what we lost.’

The thought surprised him, foreign and unfamiliar against the careful, self-serving instincts he’d nursed for so long. He hadn’t expected to feel anything resembling solidarity with Logan, of all people — the man who’d broken his own engagement with Julian in favor of Mika once, however briefly, before circumstances shifted everything entirely.

But something about Logan’s public, devastating loss today resonated uncomfortably close to Mika’s own unresolved situation, both of them now facing consequences neither could properly undo, no matter how sincerely they might regret the choices that had led them here.

’maybe that’s exactly why I want to tell him,’ Mika thought, turning the impulse over with careful, uncomfortable honesty. ’because I understand, better than almost anyone else could, exactly what it feels like to finally recognize the value of something only after you’ve already thrown it away completely.’

He sat back down slowly, pulling parchment and quill toward him, considering for a long moment before finally, hesitantly, beginning to write.

*Logan,* he began, the words coming slower and more carefully than anything he’d written in weeks, *I heard about the fight. I imagine you don’t want to hear from me right now, and I understand if that’s the case. but I wanted to say something anyway, for whatever it’s worth.*

*I spent months hoping you’d eventually see reason and come back to me. I built an entire fantasy around it, convinced myself that Julian’s disappearance meant my patience would eventually be rewarded, that everything would simply return to how I believed it should have always been. I was wrong about almost all of it, and I think, somewhere underneath my own pride, I’ve known that for a while now.*

*what I want to tell you is this — there’s no going back. not for you, and not for me. what’s done is done, and no amount of regret, or fighting, or hoping properly changes that. I know that’s not comforting. I don’t think comfort is actually what either of us needs right now.*

*I don’t know what you’re supposed to do with that knowledge. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with it either, honestly. but I thought you deserved to hear it from someone who understands exactly how it feels to finally recognize what you lost, only once it’s already too late to properly fix it.*

*I’m sorry, for whatever that’s worth. not just for today. for everything I did while hoping your loss would somehow become my gain. that was never fair to you, and it certainly wasn’t fair to Julian.*

*Mika*

He read the letter over twice, something uncertain and vulnerable settling behind his composed exterior as he considered whether to actually send it at all. Part of him wanted to tear it up immediately, embarrassed by the raw, unguarded honesty bleeding through every careful word. Another part, quieter and more insistent, recognized that this might be the first genuinely honest thing he’d done in months.

He folded the letter carefully, sealing it before he could talk himself out of it entirely, and called for a messenger to deliver it before the last of his resolve could crumble.

Once it was gone, sent beyond any hope of recall, Mika sat alone in his quarters again, staring at the empty space where the letter had been, something complicated and unfamiliar settling in his chest — not quite relief, not quite regret, simply the strange, unsteady sensation of finally being honest about something he’d spent months carefully avoiding.

’no going back,’ he thought again, turning the phrase over in his own mind now, applying it to himself as much as he’d applied it to Logan. ’not to the border academy. not to who I was before any of this happened. not to whatever fantasy I built about Logan eventually choosing me.’

He thought of Dan, of the friendship he’d damaged so thoroughly that night, wondering whether that particular door had already closed for good the same way Julian’s had closed for Logan.

’maybe some things really can’t be fixed,’ Mika thought, the realization settling heavy and unfamiliar in his chest, ’no matter how much you eventually regret losing them.’

He remained sitting there long into the evening, turning the uncomfortable, unresolved thought over and over, uncertain what came next for him now that the careful, self-serving version of himself he’d clung to for months had finally, quietly, begun to crack open into something he didn’t yet fully recognize.
