Chapter 168: What They Remember
The debriefing convened in a smaller, more private chamber than the war room, the Emperor present alongside Reid and Julian, while Xavier and Ian sat across the table under careful but not hostile guard, the weight of the previous visit still settling fresh and unresolved beneath the more formal atmosphere.
“thank you both for agreeing to this,” the Emperor said, voice measured and even despite the obvious wariness still present beneath his composure. “anything you can tell us about the entity’s methods could prove valuable, given what we’re facing.”
“we’ll tell you everything we remember,” Xavier said immediately, something eager still threading through his voice, though considerably more controlled now than during Julian’s earlier visit. “I only hope it actually helps.”
Reid leaned forward, expression carefully neutral despite his own lingering distrust. “start with how it communicates,” he said. “when it directs activity remotely, without manifesting directly. we’ve seen it coordinate a horde across significant distance. how does that actually work.”
Ian considered the question with careful, methodical focus, old habits of precise, strategic thought settling naturally into place despite everything else weighing on him. “it maintains what we understood as threads,” he said. “connections extending outward from itself to anything it’s claimed or created — us, included, before Julian severed that bond. through those threads, it can direct behavior, share awareness, exert control, all without needing to manifest its full presence.”
“how far do those threads extend,” Reid asked.
“we don’t know the absolute limit,” Ian admitted. “but considerable distance, certainly. it directed the horde’s assault on the capital from somewhere we were never able to properly locate, and that assault spanned the entire city.”
Julian absorbed that, turning the information over with careful attention. “if it’s consolidating something to the west,” he said slowly, “it’s likely doing so through the same kind of thread network. gathering resources, directing preparation, all without needing to be physically present at every stage.”
“that would be consistent with its established patterns,” Ian agreed.
“is there a way to detect those threads,” the Emperor asked. “before they’ve fully manifested into something like the horde assault.”
Xavier and Ian exchanged a brief, uncertain glance. “possibly,” Xavier said slowly. “when it was still controlling us, we sometimes sensed fluctuations before major directives — a kind of pressure building, almost like weather shifting before a storm. we never had the tools to properly measure it, but it was noticeable, at least to those bound directly to it.”
“could either of you sense something like that now,” Julian asked. “given everything’s severed.”
Ian considered the question carefully. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “the connection’s gone, as far as we can tell. but residual sensitivity might remain, the same way a limb sometimes aches long after an injury’s healed.” He paused. “we’d be willing to test it, if that’s something the Empire finds useful.”
Reid’s jaw tightened slightly, clearly weighing the offer against lingering caution. “that would require trusting you considerably more than we currently do,” he said.
“we understand,” Xavier said quietly. “we’re not asking for trust we haven’t earned. only offering what might genuinely help, regardless of what you decide to do with the offer.”
The Emperor studied them both for a long moment, something thoughtful behind his composed exterior. “what else can you tell us,” he said finally, “about what this larger consolidation might actually produce. you said it’s gathering resources. toward what end.”
Ian’s expression sobered further. “we believe,” he said slowly, “that it’s preparing something beyond simple numbers. the horde assaults, the testing — those served to gauge resistance, to understand what the Empire and Julian specifically were capable of withstanding. what comes next likely represents its actual, considered response to that understanding.”
“meaning what, specifically,” Julian pressed.
“we don’t know specifically,” Xavier admitted, something frustrated and helpless crossing his features. “we were never given that level of insight, even at the height of our service. it kept its true intentions carefully guarded, even from those it had claimed most completely.”
Julian’s jaw tightened, the uncertainty sitting heavy and unwelcome despite the genuine effort both brothers were clearly making to provide useful information.
“there’s one more thing,” Ian said slowly, something careful and deliberate in the way he chose his next words. “something we only partially understood, even during our service. the entity referred, occasionally, to other worlds it had touched before this one. other legends it had encountered and either consumed or allowed to continue, depending on what it judged them worth.”
The room went very still.
“it’s done this before,” Julian said quietly. “crossed into other worlds. tested other people like me.”
“we believe so,” Ian confirmed. “though we never learned specifics — how many, what became of them, whether any of them ever actually defeated it outright.”
Julian absorbed that slowly, something cold and unsettled crawling through his chest despite his careful, composed exterior. He thought of the archivist’s fragmented ledger, the “crossing incident” buried in sealed records generations old, the anchor point theory the Empire’s scholars had pieced together independently. All of it suddenly fitting into a far larger, more terrifying pattern than anyone had properly understood before.
“if it’s done this before,” the Emperor said slowly, “and judged previous legends unworthy — what happened to them.”
“we don’t know,” Xavier said quietly. “but given everything else we understand about its nature, I don’t imagine the outcome was kind.”
The room settled into heavy, uneasy silence, the weight of the revelation pressing down hard across everyone present.
“this needs to go into the official record,” Reid said finally, voice tight with grim, focused resolve. “cross-referenced against the archive’s existing material on the anchor point theory. if there’s a pattern here, something consistent across multiple worlds, we need to understand it properly before whatever’s coming actually arrives.”
“agreed,” the Emperor said. “and the sensitivity you mentioned,” he added, glancing toward Xavier and Ian, “the residual awareness of the threads. I’d like to explore that further, under proper supervision, if you’re both still willing.”
“we are,” Ian said immediately.
Julian remained quiet through the final exchange, turning everything over with careful, methodical focus, the shape of a far larger, more ancient pattern settling cold and unwelcome into place behind his composed exterior.
‘other worlds,’ he thought. ‘other legends. consumed, or allowed to continue.’
[Host,] the System murmured privately, sensing the weight of his unspoken thoughts. [This unit notes the implications are significant. If this pattern holds, host represents neither the first nor potentially the last anomaly this entity has encountered across its existence.]
‘I know,’ Julian thought back. ‘I’m trying to figure out what that actually means for us.’
[This unit cannot provide that answer yet. Further information will be required.]
The debriefing continued a while longer, careful and methodical, Reid and the Emperor extracting every fragment of useful detail Xavier and Ian could offer, and by the time it finally concluded, the chamber’s atmosphere had shifted into something heavier, more grimly focused than it had carried at the session’s start.
As the guards moved to escort the two brothers back toward their chamber, Xavier paused, glancing back toward Julian one final time.
“I hope this helped,” he said quietly. “even a little.”
“it did,” Julian confirmed, something genuine in the acknowledgment despite the weight still pressing heavy in his chest. “thank you, both of you.”
Xavier’s expression eased slightly at that, something fragile and grateful crossing his exhausted features before the guards led him away, and Julian remained in the quiet chamber a while longer afterward, turning the revelation of other worlds, other legends, over and over in his mind, the shape of the entity’s true, ancient scope settling heavier with every passing moment.
