Reborn as an SSS-Rank Guide in the Sentinel Academy [BL]
Chapter 170: New Players in the Dark
Far to the west, beyond the boundaries of any territory the Empire’s maps had ever properly charted, the land stretched barren and scorched beneath a sky that never seemed to fully clear of its low, ashen haze.
Gray shapes moved steady through the ruined landscape, converging from scattered points across the horizon, thousands of them now, no longer the chaotic, scattered forces that had once tested the capital’s defenses, but something organized, disciplined, falling into formation with an eerie, coordinated precision that made even the entity’s earlier assaults look crude by comparison.
At the center of the gathering, standing atop a jagged outcropping overlooking the assembling horde, a figure watched the proceedings with cold, patient attention.
It wasn’t the entity itself — not fully. A fragment, perhaps, or a projection, formless edges bending strange against the ashen sky, though something in its bearing carried unmistakable weight and authority, the surrounding corrupted forces moving with the same absolute, unquestioning obedience they’d once shown only the entity’s direct presence.
*the gathering proceeds as intended,* it observed, voice carrying soft and layered across the barren ground below, audible to nothing but the silent, waiting horde.
Movement stirred at the base of the outcropping, and a new shape emerged from the ashen haze — tall, humanoid, though something about its proportions sat subtly, unsettlingly wrong, limbs too long, joints bending in directions that made the eye recoil from trying to properly track them.
“the first of the new vessels,” the fragment said, something almost pleased threading through its layered tone as it studied the approaching figure. “formed from the densest concentration of corrupted essence this unit has yet achieved. considerably more stable than anything produced during the earlier, cruder experiments.”
The vessel stopped at the base of the outcropping, head tilting slow and mechanical, awaiting further instruction.
“test its capability,” the fragment commanded.
The vessel turned without hesitation, moving toward a cluster of rogue Aberrations gathered nearby, and the demonstration that followed left even the surrounding, already-corrupted horde shifting back in what might have passed, in creatures capable of fear, for genuine unease. The vessel’s strike cut through three rogues simultaneously, speed and precision considerably beyond anything a standard high-class Aberration should have possessed, the motion fluid and economical in a way that felt, disturbingly, almost familiar.
“impressive,” the fragment observed. “though still insufficient, compared to what the legend himself has already demonstrated. more refinement required before deployment.”
Another shape emerged from the gathered ranks, considerably smaller, moving with a careful, deliberate grace that distinguished it immediately from the horde’s otherwise mechanical uniformity.
“a second variant,” the fragment said, studying this new arrival with the same patient, methodical attention. “built not for raw strength, but for subtlety. infiltration. the capacity to move among the Empire’s own ranks undetected, should direct confrontation prove insufficient on its own.”
The smaller figure bowed low, something unsettlingly graceful in the motion, and the fragment’s formless attention lingered on it a moment longer before shifting onward, surveying the broader assembly of newly-forming vessels scattered across the ashen plain.
“the legend proved resistant to illusion,” the fragment said, almost conversational now, addressing no one in particular as it continued its careful survey. “resistant to overwhelming force, resistant to the severing of his own allies’ loyalty. a worthy test subject, in truth, perhaps the most worthy this unit has encountered across every world it has ever touched.”
It paused, something that might have been genuine consideration rippling through its ancient, layered awareness.
“but resistance built on protecting others carries its own exploitable weakness,” it continued. “every single demonstration, every single choice — he fights hardest, sacrifices most, when something beyond himself hangs in the balance. strangers on a roadside. an academy full of frightened students. even the very men who once held him captive.” Something cold and satisfied threaded through the observation now. “that pattern will not change. and patterns, properly understood, become leverage.”
The vessels continued their slow, methodical formation across the barren plain, hundreds becoming thousands, each one subtly distinct in purpose and capability, no longer the simple, overwhelming numbers of earlier assaults but something closer to a carefully composed arsenal, built deliberately to counter every strength Julian had demonstrated thus far.
“when the time comes,” the fragment said, formless attention finally turning fully south, toward the distant, unseen capital where Julian trained and healed and slowly rebuilt everything that had once been taken from him, “this unit will not simply test his resistance. this unit will test exactly how much he’s willing to sacrifice when there is no longer a clean, simple choice between fighting and losing. when every option costs him something precious, regardless of which he chooses.”
It let the thought settle, patient and certain, across the gathered, waiting horde.
“gather the remaining vessels,” it commanded finally. “complete the formation. we are not yet ready to move, but we draw considerably closer with each passing day.”
The corrupted forces continued their silent, disciplined assembly, and the fragment remained atop its jagged outcropping a while longer, surveying the growing arsenal with the same cold, patient satisfaction it had carried through every stage of its careful, methodical design.
—
Far beneath the ashen plain, in chambers carved deep into the scorched earth, something else stirred — containment vessels lining the walls in careful, ordered rows, each one holding, suspended in pale, glowing liquid, the still, unmoving forms of individuals the entity had gathered across its long, patient search for exactly the right components.
A low hum filled the chamber, steady and constant, and one by one, the vessels began to glow brighter, the pale liquid within churning faster, the still forms inside twitching with the first faint signs of awakening response.
*soon,* the fragment’s distant awareness murmured, sensing the chamber’s activity even from its position atop the outcropping far above. *soon, the arsenal will be complete, and the legend’s resistance will finally, properly be tested against something no amount of mercy or protective instinct can adequately prepare him to face.*
The vessels continued their slow, steady awakening, pale light pulsing stronger with every passing moment, and across the barren, ashen plain, the gathered horde continued its silent, disciplined formation, thousands of corrupted shapes falling into position beneath a sky that never cleared, waiting, patient and absolute, for the moment their distant, ancient master finally decided the time had come to move.
