Reborn as an Ugly Wife in the Countryside
Chapter 1902 - 1904: Investigating in Private
Chapter 1902: Chapter 1904: Investigating in Private
The old lady shook her head; she really didn’t know anything about this.
Back when she was young she’d been quite decisive too, and she had her own way of running things as a mother‑in‑law, but that was limited to their own household. For big matters, it was always the men who called the shots—she didn’t even have the right to ask questions.
Seeing the old lady shake her head, everyone’s spirits dipped a little.
It was Yang Ming who spoke up, "It’s fine. Just give me the birth dates of the older and younger paternal cousins. I’ll go check with the human traffickers, or look into it at the government office."
At this point Xiaoxiao spoke up, "About this matter, everyone keep it to yourselves. We’ll just investigate quietly. If someone with ulterior motives sets eyes on how well off our Yang Family is now and sends someone to impersonate them, that’d be a real mess."
Xiaoxiao had to give them a reminder. At times like this, if some troublemaker pops up, it’s like someone’s gone and spoiled a whole pot of soup.
Everyone understood what she meant, and they all agreed.
Chu Lian and Wang Xiangxiang had only listened from start to finish and hadn’t taken part. When they were looking for Yang Xia, Yang Ming hadn’t asked him for help, so it stood to reason that he wouldn’t ask now either. He knew very well how proud Yang Ming was in this regard, so he didn’t butt in.
After the meal everyone helped tidy up a bit, then the gathering broke up.
Li Fugui took his people and headed back to the County.
The men of the household had all drunk themselves silly and collapsed into bed.
The women each took their own children back to their rooms.
The Yang Family courtyard finally grew quiet.
Yang Ming actually hadn’t drunk much. As soon as he went into the room, he reached from behind and slipped an arm around his wife’s waist.
Xiaoxiao froze for a moment, then turned around. "Don’t mess around."
She’d been run ragged the whole day, and he still had the nerve to be all huggy and clingy.
Yang Ming’s cheeks were flushed; you could tell the wine had gone a bit to his head, but he still wore a crooked grin. "I’m happy."
Xiaoxiao couldn’t help but snort with laughter. To be honest, she was happy too.
Such a big courtyard, such a prosperous household—she felt quite accomplished.
"Did you drink too much? Go lie down on the kang for a while!"
"Let’s talk a bit first."
"..." Xiaoxiao felt that when she’d first met Yang Ming, he’d been like a block of wood, barely saying a word. But now, he was like a child—catch hold of you and he just keeps talking. "What do you want to say?"
"I’m going to sit the exam!" Yang Ming said. His wife had always taken this very seriously, so why wasn’t she reacting or bringing it up?
"Oh right, I haven’t even asked you yet—when is it?"
Xiaoxiao had long since forgotten about Yang Ming’s upcoming exam—couldn’t even remember what country that matter had flown off to. If the subject hadn’t come up at the table today, she still wouldn’t know.
"In two months," Yang Ming answered.
"Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. It’s fine even if you don’t pass. The way our life is now is already pretty good." Xiaoxiao was being honest here—she was really quite content with their current life. A peaceful, prosperous age probably feels just like this.
She didn’t have any grand ambitions. As far as she was concerned, living like this was perfectly good.
"Mm." Yang Ming just made a sound of acknowledgment and said nothing more. In his heart, though, he was determined not to live off his wife. Over the past half year, the Escort Agency had finally started bringing some Silver home. The furniture and other things bought for the house had all been paid for with the Escort Agency’s Silver.
At least he’d managed to avoid giving people cause to say he was being kept by his wife or his family. But that still wasn’t enough—his wife was far too tired. He had to find a way to make her less tired.
The first step was to study properly for the exam and, in time, make her an official’s lady.
After that, the two of them washed up, climbed onto the kang, lay side by side, chatted a bit more about looking for the paternal cousins, and when drowsiness finally hit them both, they went to sleep.
