Chapter 50: Kallias of Alexandria

But their legal arguments were overshadowed by a more terrifying reality. By offering fair wages and political representation on the Syndicate Council, Lucius was threatening the authority of every slaver, patrician, and Guild Master in the province.

If the plebeians and chained laborers of Gaul realized they could be treated as human beings based on their merit, the economy would collapse.

The elites feared a mass exodus... or worse, a slave revolt that would make Spartacus look like a localized riot.

Despite their outrage, the magistrates were paralyzed. Rumors of the massacre at the gorge had spread through the military camps.

The common belief was that Lucius commanded a legion of demons who could summon fire from the sky, backed by a horde of Gothic cavalry.

Taking Fundus Ferratus by force was no longer a matter for the city watch; it would require the might of the Emperor, and the Emperor was hundreds of miles away in Rome.

As the weeks dragged on, the consequence of the *Codex Umbrae* began to manifest.

A migration of humanity began flowing toward the eastern ridges...

Runaway slaves, indebted farmers, and disenfranchised artisans fled their masters under the cover of darkness, risking crucifixion to reach the gates of the empire.

Rather than turning these fugitives away or returning them to the magistrates, Lucius welcomed the tide.

This influx of manpower accelerated the scaling of the estate. The laborers were funneled into Wulfric’s training camps, the coal processing lines, and the paper mills being constructed along the riverbank.

Fundus Ferratus was no longer an estate; it was transforming into a sovereign city-state.

However, among the laborers seeking sanctuary, the most valuable assets to arrive at the gates were a small band of fugitives who carried no tools or weapons. They carried scrolls.

They were Greek natural philosophers, engineers, and scholars of *chymia* the precursor to chemistry.

These men of science had long been persecuted by the Guilds of Civitas Aurelia, who suppressed any technological innovation that threatened their monopolies on labor and materials.

Knowing that the Forge Master was dismantling the Guilds and protecting his borders with lethal force, this band of intellectuals had disguised themselves as plebeians to escape the city.

As the group of scholars crested the final hill and looked down into the valley of Fundus Ferratus, they stopped in their tracks, mesmerized.

They were men of education, yet they could not comprehend the scale of the engineering before them.

They saw trip-hammers smashing down on fibrous pulp along the river.

They watched rail-carts moving tons of coal from the mines.

"By the gods of Olympus," whispered the leader of the group. "He has harnessed the rivers. He is moving mountains with wheels."

Their awe was interrupted as they approached the gates of the *Castra Umbra*.

A squad of *Custodes* stepped forward, their movements synchronized.

The guards were clad in identical steel scale armor, and they lowered their pikes, creating a barricade of steel.

"Halt!" the squad leader barked. "The Forge is closed to vagrants today. State your business, or turn back to the road."

The scholars flinched at the steel points leveled at their chests.

The leader stepped forward, keeping his hands visible, and threw back his hood.

"Peace, soldiers!" the man pleaded, his Latin accented with Greek. "I am Kallias of Alexandria, a master of metallurgy and natural philosophy. These are my apprentices. We have fled the magistrates in the city, and we beg an audience with the Forge Master. We carry knowledge that he will find valuable."

The squad leader frowned, eyeing the group with suspicion.

The *Custodes* were under orders to process all refugees through the labor camps.

However, Valerius had drilled a mandate into their heads: if any man claiming to be an architect, a mathematician, or a scholar arrived at the gates, they were to be brought to the Dominus immediately.

The guard lowered his pike, signaling for his men to stand down. "Search them for weapons. If they are clean, escort them to the villa."

Minutes later, Kallias and his apprentices were led into the atrium of the villa...

Lucius was standing over a drafting table, engrossed in a blueprint of a dual-chambered reverberatory furnace.

Isolda stood beside him, her eyes locking onto the newcomers as the guards marched them into the room.

"Dominus," the squad leader announced, striking his chest in salute. "We caught these men at the gates. They claim to be scholars of metallurgy from Alexandria."

Lucius looked up, setting his stylus down. A flicker of excitement ignited in his chest.

Kallias bowed. "Forge Master, I am Kallias. For years, I served as the chief mineralogist for the provincial mint. I have spent my life studying the purification of metals and the volatile properties of the earth."

Lucius crossed his arms. "If you are a master of the mint, why are you wearing the rags of a beggar? Why come to my estate instead of enjoying the luxury of the Governor’s court?"

Kallias’s face darkened with anger.

"I discovered a method to purify raw sulfur and mix it with specific mineral salts to create controlled heat. It would have revolutionized the smelting of copper. But the local Charcoal Guild saw it as a threat to their fuel contracts. They bribed the magistrates, burned my laboratory to the ground, and declared my science to be dark magic. We escaped with our lives."

Lucius’s heart skipped a beat. Purified sulfur and mineral salts?!

The man was standing on the precipice of discovering early chemical explosives, and the elite had chased him out of the city!

Isolda, sensing the shift in her husband’s demeanor, glanced at Lucius. She saw the smile spreading across his face.

"Your story aligns with the stupidity of the magistrates," Lucius said, stepping out from behind the drafting table. "I will grant you and your students sanctuary within these walls. You will be fed, clothed, and protected by my steel."

Kallias collapsed with relief, tears of gratitude welling in his eyes. "Thank you, Dominus. We will gladly labor in your mines—"

"You will not touch a pickaxe, Kallias," Lucius interrupted. "I will build you a laboratory, superior to the one they burned. I will provide you with all the sulfur, coal, and iron you can ever desire."

The scholar looked up, bewildered. "But... what do you require of us in return, Forge Master?"

Lucius leaned forward. "You are now the Syndicate alchemist."
