Reborn in hell with a skill creation system

Chapter 97: The Clash at the Ashen Gap

  • Next Chapter

The void of the Ashen Gap turned into a canvas of blinding gold and furious crimson.

When the Joint Vanguard Fleet surged forward, they did not move in the rigid, mechanical grids of the Iron Hegemony. They moved like a living storm, a fluid, unpredictable mesh of heavy celestial iron and agile, swept-wing glass-cutters weaving around drifting asteroids and plasma discharges.

On the left wing, three squadrons of Archway glass-ships carved through a defensive swarm of Hegemony drone-frigates. Their iridescent hulls reflected the harsh red glow of the enemy engines, turning the ambient radiation into pure kinetic acceleration. As they looped around a massive, iron-spiked destroyer, their wing-mounted nether-cannons fired in unison.

The shot was not a simple laser beam. Tipped with stabilized netherfire forged from Hesed stone and Archway resonance crystal, the purple-and-gold bolts punched through thirty feet of reinforced dreadnought armor, expanding into localized spatial implosions that collapsed the enemy’s main engine thrusters from within.

"Left wing clear!" Wrath’s roar thundered through the quantum comms from the forward line. He stood atop the outer hull of the vanguard flagship Iron Covenant, his heavy boots locked to the plating by magnetic resonance, his massive nether-cleaver burning with dark gold flames. "Target their supply transports! Don’t let those moon-sized smelters lock onto the asteroid belt!"

High above the primary dogfights, the Horizon Spire led the central push straight toward the World-Cracker Anchor.

Seraph flew alongside the flagship’s starboard deck, her violet-flame wings sweeping back as she launched herself directly toward an incoming swarm of automated interceptors. Her twin curved blades danced through the void, leaving shimmering arcs of purple fire that severed iron wings and shattered red plasma arrays before the enemy drones could lock their sensors.

Inside the command bridge of the Horizon Spire, Zara stood at the strategic console, her silver quill moving across her ledger with mechanical speed.

"Mael, the Hegemony hive-mind is shifting its logic protocol," Zara announced, her voice calm despite the violent vibrations rocking the deck as the flagship’s forward cannons fired continuous salvoes. "They’ve realized standard energy shields cannot halt our Covenant-infused rounds. They are redirecting all power to their gravimetric anchors to create a localized spatial collapse around our forward vanguard!"

"They want to crush us with density," the First Architect observed from his seat behind the helm, his blind eyes turned toward the tactical array. "A blunt force response from a mind that cannot comprehend individual adaptability."

Mael stepped off the bow of the Horizon Spire, his feet catching the open void as if stepping onto solid marble.

The golden-and-black Covenant runes along his arms burned with intense, steady light. Around his brow, his gold-shadow horns flared into a full crown of brilliant, woven starlight, anchoring his Stage 5 architecture across five thousand miles of open space.

"They think gravity belongs to mass," Mael said softly, his voice carrying clearly across the quantum network. "Let us show them that gravity belongs to the soul."

He reached out with his left hand, spreading his fingers toward the three massive battle-cruisers leading the Hegemony’s gravimetric trap.

Soul Forge: Second Law—The Weight of Choice.

Instead of pushing against the crushing force field, Mael inverted the spatial pressure. The massive gravitational pulse generated by the enemy ships, designed to crumble the Vanguard fleet into scrap metal was suddenly folded back onto their own hulls.

The spatial distortion snapped like a stretched steel cable.

The three five-mile-long battle-cruisers shuddered violently, their jagged iron hulls buckling inward under the weight of their own artificial gravity before bursting into massive silent spheres of golden sparks and iron debris.

[TARGET SOVEREIGN ARCHITECTURE UNCATALOGUED]

[RE-CALCULATING STRATEGIC SURVIVAL VALUE...]

Inside the colossal World-Cracker Anchor, the collective intelligence of the Iron Sovereign Domain staggered. For five thousand years, their strategy had relied on absolute physical dominance, mass, density, and kinetic firepower. They had extinguished star systems by simply crushing them beneath the sheer weight of millions of standardized hulls.

They had never encountered an entity whose presence alone redefined the laws of local space.

"Mael!" Seraph called out, landing lightly on a floating piece of wreckage nearby, her violet wings glowing softly in the dark. "The Anchor’s core is opening! They’re preparing an emergency stellar-ignition blast, they mean to detonate the entire Ashen Gap to take us down with them!"

Across the void, the tri-part claws of the World-Cracker Anchor pulled back completely, revealing a central chamber burning with a volatile, artificial star, a dense ball of compressed white-hot plasma unstable enough to vaporize every ship within ten light-minutes.

"They’d kill their own fleet just to eliminate ours," Wrath spat, steering the Iron Covenant alongside Mael’s position, his eyes fixed on the swelling white glare. "Cold, iron bastards."

"They don’t value life because they’ve never owned it," Mael replied, drawing his choice-forged blade.

The blade’s edge shimmered with a soft, golden warmth, not the destructive fire of an Overseer’s execution beam, but the deep, quiet resonance of thirty-one united worlds. The light grew, catching the silver threads of Zara’s ledger, the violet fire of Seraph’s wings, the bronze sheen of Archway Nine, and the sturdy iron of Hesed.

Mael held the blade high above his head.

"All ships, align your resonance grids with the Horizon Spire," Mael commanded. "Zara, write the anchor."

Zara opened her ledger to a fresh, glowing page. Her quill moved in a single, unbroken stroke across the parchment, tracing the unified seal of the Covenant of the Unwritten Realm.

"Bound by choice," Zara murmured, her voice chiming like silver bells across the fleet’s comms. "Sustained by unity. Unyielding against the void."

Every vessel in the Joint Vanguard Fleet from the smallest glass-cutter to the largest celestial stone frigate, lit up with a matching golden aura. The energy from a thousand engines did not disperse into space; it channeled directly into Mael, feeding the blade held high in his grip.

The World-Cracker Anchor unleashed its terminal payload. A blinding supernova of white-hot plasma erupted from its core, expanding across the void-trench in a wall of utter destruction.

Mael brought his choice-forged blade down in a single, clean vertical arc.

Unwritten Domain: The Horizon Divide.

A wave of gold-and-silver starlight sliced through the center of the void. It did not merely hit the supernova explosion, it parted it.

The wall of white plasma split neatly down the middle, flowing harmlessly around the Vanguard fleet like a river parting around a massive ancient reef. The gold-and-silver wave continued forward, passing through the length of the World-Cracker Anchor with silent, absolute precision.

For a long second, the massive, moon-sized structure hung suspended in space.

Then, along the clean gold line Mael had carved through its center, the jagged crimson steel began to dissolve, not into fiery explosions or dangerous scrap, but into soft, inert dust that drifted away into the dark like fallen autumn leaves.

Silence settled over the Ashen Gap.

The remaining vessels of the Iron Hegemony, their central hive-mind shattered by the loss of the Anchor and the complete failure of their logic protocols, began to stall. Their red plasma engines flickered, their weapons powering down as their cold logic cores struggled to process a force they could neither measure nor consume.

Wrath let out a low whistle, lowering his nether-cleaver and shaking his head with a proud laugh. "Well. That certainly sets a boundary."

Seraph flew up to Mael’s side, her dark purple eyes scanning the motionless enemy fleet. "What do we do with the remaining ships? Their hive-mind is broken, but the crews are still inside."

Mael sheathed his choice-forged blade. The golden halo of his horns softened back into a quiet thread of light above his brow, and his gold-flecked eyes returned to their calm, steady depth.

"We offer them the same thing we offered everyone else," Mael said, turning his gaze back toward the Horizon Spire as the flagship glided gracefully through the floating dust of the destroyed Anchor. "A choice."

Zara stepped up to the railing of the quarterdeck as Mael landed back on the bow. She held up her ledger, showing the fresh silver entry glowing brightly on the page, a record of the victory, but more importantly, a map of the newly secured border.

"The Iron Hegemony’s vanguard has been completely neutralized," Zara reported, a sharp, satisfied smile touching her lips. "High Conservator Selene reports that the long-range sensors across Sphere Nine-Nine are already broadcasting the battle footage to the surrounding sectors."

"Let them broadcast it," Mael said, his voice carrying a quiet warmth as he looked out across his crew, Wrath wiping sweat from his brow, Seraph sheathing her blades, the First Architect smiling quietly near the wheel, and Zara closing her silver ledger.

"The Pinnacle Hegemonies thought they were entering an abandoned graveyard," Mael continued, looking past the Ashen Gap toward the infinite starry expanse ahead. "Now they know. The Unwritten Realm is alive, and we write our own future."

The battle lines at the Ashen Gap slowly faded into a quiet calm, but the momentum of the Joint Vanguard Fleet remained untouched.

Across the void, Archway glass-cutters guided disabled Hegemony frigates into secure holding patterns while Hesed heavy-iron tenders began towing salvaged alloy plates.

Mael walked to the stern of the Horizon Spire, looking back toward the vast, curving horizon of Sphere Nine-Nine.

"One Hegemony down," Wrath noted, resting his broad nether-cleaver over his shoulder.

"Two more watching from the shadows," Mael corrected softly, a confident spark in his eyes. "And now, they know we’re ready."
