Reborn in the 1970s — Married a Proud Rough Man
Chapter 688 - 239: Does He Love Me?
"She wouldn’t dare," Jie Jingchen said, his brow tightly furrowed as a dark look crossed his eyes.
"Jie Jingsi, stop deluding yourself. You know better than anyone that your aunt would dare," Qin Mei said. "Don’t be fooled by how timid Xu Jiali is around you. She’s got more nerve than you think. She knew perfectly well I’m your wife, and she still tried to trick me into going out."
Jie Jingchen fell silent, not refuting Qin Mei’s words.
"Back then, your maternal grandparents were against your parents getting together, but what happened in the end?" Qin Mei asked. ’I don’t know much about my mother-in-law and father-in-law’s love story, but was there even any love between them back then?’
’Definitely not. My mother-in-law insisted on marrying my father-in-law to repay Zhang Hongying for saving her life. I really don’t know what good deeds my father-in-law did in a past life to deserve that.’
"When our nanny fell down the stairs today, your aunt was extremely worried. After she was taken to the hospital, your aunt just waited by the phone. I assured her again and again that her life wasn’t in danger, but that didn’t calm her down at all. Then Gao Qiang called, and in just a few moments, he had her smiling through her tears," Qin Mei said.
"What are you trying to say?" Jie Jingchen asked.
"I’m saying that your aunt is using all her energy and focus to fight you all. Where would she find the time to really think through what her married life with Gao Qiang will be like?" Qin Mei raised an eyebrow, a lazy smile on her face as she poked Jie Jingchen’s cheek. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."
Jie Jingchen stared at her, his eyes filled with scrutiny. "Meimei, I suspect you’re trying to subtly convince me to agree to the Gao Family coming over tomorrow to discuss the marriage."
Qin Mei’s expression darkened. ’After all I’ve said, that’s the only thing he got out of it?’
"She’s your aunt, not mine." Qin Mei jabbed Jie Jingchen’s cheek. "If she were my aunt and I was genuinely against the marriage, I wouldn’t waste my time on her. I’d just kill the man and be done with it."
Jie Jingchen caught her hand. "Murder is illegal," he said, exasperated.
"Who said anything about doing it out in the open? Haven’t you ever heard of a quiet assassination?" Qin Mei shot Jie Jingchen a look. ’She was just talking tough, of course.’
"Meimei, are you suggesting I send someone to assassinate Gao Qiang?" The corners of Jie Jingchen’s lips curved upward, a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Your aunt and Gao Qiang are in the honeymoon phase. If you dare have him assassinated, he’ll become this great, tragic love in her mind, and she’ll hate you for the rest of her life," Qin Mei said, not exaggerating in the slightest.
Jie Jingchen gazed at Qin Mei and said calmly, "But you’re the one who suggested killing him."
Qin Mei was speechless. Jie Jingchen also sank into thought.
After a long moment, Qin Mei asked tentatively, "Jie Jingsi, you’re not actually planning to have Gao Qiang killed, are you?"
Jie Jingchen merely glanced at her before ruffling her hair. "Why would I kill him? To bring a world of trouble down on myself?"
Qin Mei breathed a sigh of relief. ’Gao Qiang can die, but he absolutely cannot die at the hands of the Qiao Family. Someone driven mad by love can be easily manipulated, and they can be incredibly destructive.’
"I’ll go talk to Grandma. You go find Xu Jiali." Jie Jingchen patted Qin Mei’s shoulder, giving her an assignment.
"Why would I go find your aunt?" Qin Mei asked, looking lost.
"To tell her the good news. I’ve agreed to let her boyfriend bring his parents over tomorrow to discuss their wedding." Jie Jingchen stood up and brushed off the non-existent dust from his trousers.
That gesture from Jie Jingchen made Qin Mei’s expression falter. ’What am I, a germ?’
Jie Jingchen went to persuade his grandmother, while Qin Mei sat in the room for a bit before heading to Xu Jiali’s room.
「The next day.」
The grandparents still took the meeting between the two families very seriously, getting up early to make arrangements.
Xu Jiali was up at the crack of dawn, putting on makeup and getting dressed. Qin Mei and Jie Jingchen were dressed casually, but for some reason, Xu Jiali—who was getting bolder by the day—used a mix of pleading and demanding to force them to change.
Xu Jiali personally coordinated their outfits. Jie Jingchen was put in a black suit, while Qin Mei was given a qipao. This was Xiangjiang, and given Xu Jiali’s usual taste, one would expect her to make Qin Mei wear a frilly princess dress, but surprisingly, it was a qipao.
Qin Mei had an excellent figure, and the magnificent qipao looked stunning on her. With her peerless elegance, sultry eyes, and bewitching smile, she gave off the air of a deadly beautiful poppy.
Standing together, Qin Mei and Jie Jingchen—the handsome man and the beautiful woman—were a perfect match.
"Beautiful! Perfect," Xu Jiali said, extremely satisfied.
Qin Mei looked at her, speechless. "Let’s switch. You wear the qipao, and I’ll wear your princess dress."
"I don’t look good in a qipao." Xu Jiali knew her own limits. She didn’t look as good in a qipao as she did in a princess dress—at least, that’s what she thought.
